The Girl Next Door (2004)
Not My Fantasy
Another cheesy, misguided, misogynistic so called teen fantasy movie about nothing. What starts out as an intriguing premise, quickly turns into a downward spiral of bad plotting when they actually remove the love interest from the storyline half way through the movie and turn the film into a conflict between an innocent kid and some bad porn producers. Huh? It would've been a whole lot better if they kept the GIRL involved. What kind of romantic comedy loses track of one of the love interests for 20 minutes? The only saving grace of any of it is Timothy Olyphant's wry and funny portrayal of a shrewd business man in the wrong business.
Good Night, and Good Luck. (2005)
Elegance
The impressive feat of this film is that it took an obvious preachy subject matter and didn't make it preachy. Instead it's elegant, refined, mature film-making the likes of which we rarely see anymore. The fear of course is that with the failure of education, the proliferation of fanaticism, greed and sloth, there's no guarantee that a movie like this can communicate as well as Edward R. Murrow did when people actually had the time to listen. In this day of overexposure of information, it's hard for one single truthful idea to impact the millions it seeks to address. We need more movies like this. My only criticism is that the secondary storyline with Robert Downey Jr and Patricia Clarkson was irrelevant and unconnected in theme and importance to the issues at hand. A good time to refill your popcorn.

Forget Everything You (think you) Know about Ray and Kevin
If you're expecting Ray and Kevin to bring their TV personas to the big screen in this movie you will be very mistaken and disappointed. This is a dark cool road-like movie. This movie could've been an independent film if they had cast actors like steve buscemi and paul giamatti as the meat salesmen. Instead, for some reason, they went with Ray and Kevin and didn't tell anybody what they did. You can't put two comedians who live in a world of laugh tracks into this kind of movie without giving the audience a hand by getting them ready for what they're about to watch. It's not that kind of funny. It's uncomfortable funny. It's ruthless funny. And you have to be ready for it. If you are, you'll have a great time. There's amazing performances by Juliette Lewis and Kim Coates and everyone else. Ray and Kevin are believable and competent in their roles. It looks cool and hot and sweaty. It's not perfect, but it's also not what you're expecting. Turn the AC off, put this movie on, and forget everything you think you know about Ray Romano and Kevin James.
