Shakhmatnaya goryachka (1925)
Perfectly paced, very funny silent short.
Just like the best Hollywood equivalents, this short silent film has a simple storyline which is, of course, a wee bit over the top, is extremely funny and is perfectly paced. I wasn't expecting anything like this at all and it was a joy from start to finish.
Later, it made me think, once again, just how many wonderful short films there have been made and lost, from all corners of the world ... a darned shame.
If ever you get a chance to see this film, you won't be disappointed.
Neobychainye priklyucheniya mistera Vesta v strane bolshevikov (1924)
An absolute delight!
I think that some people have somewhat missed the point about the "stereotypes" portrayed in this film as it is clearly meant to be very tongue-in-cheek.
The social history on view here is wonderful and the humour and action a real eye-opener considering the bad press that Russia has tended to get over the past 100 years. The acting was a delight, especially by the lead "baddy" and the "countess" ... what teeth!
I would heartily recommend this film to everyone, especially when shown with a live accompaniment!
A Is for Acid (2002)
Wonderful 1940's factual drama ... of a serial killer!
A highly entertaining telling of a real life drama about a glamourous British serial killer. Not the most likely subject to tempt an audience but the production was put together with great attention to detail, perfectly capturing Britain in the 1940's, the props, clothes, cars and atmosphere all seeming perfectly genuine. Martin Clunes was superb as Haigh and the supporting cast all played their parts wonderfully well too. A rather unusual subject portrayed with a balanced perspective and having read accounts of the events surrounding Haigh I thought it was a great visualisation of the words I had read. Very interesting indeed.
Bridget Jones's Diary (2001)
Entertaining - Good Belly Laughs
Ignoring the obvious stale "plot" development, this film should be enjoyed for what it is, a very funny British film (with an American lead!) in the style of Four Weddings. Lots of good belly laughs to be had here and well worth seeing (with or without previous alcohol unit consumption).
