The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone (1961)
Vivien Leigh looks better at 50 than this film does at 40...
...but it's bad enough to be good. Warren Beatty and Vivien Leigh in the same movie? Warren Beatty as a Roman? (It's laughable every time he says "prego.") Lotte Lenya is extremely funny, Rome looks great, and though this goes on a bit too long, it was perversely worthwhile to see it. Maybe 40 years ago "The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone" seemed sturdy, but the other night it was a good whimsical thing.
I vitelloni (1953)
The Young and the Passionate?
"Vitellone" translates literally as "tender young beef" and figuratively as "loafer." Maybe "The Tender Young Beefcake Loafers" would be a fitting subtitle. Not all of the comedy here is intentional, I think.
The Opportunists (1999)
This is the worst movie I didn't walk out of in years.
Sorry, but even Christopher Walken was unconvincing in this lazily written thing. I felt compelled to stay because it made me laugh for some odd reason, and not many movies in English come to Rome. During the intermission (a routine Italian thing), a man behind me said: Let's hope things get better for him. I replied: Let's hope things get better for US.
Alas, they didn't, for us. I'll leave the plot alone.
