Quirke (2013–2014)

Boring
11 February 2024
Those looking for a pathologist using science to unravel mysteries ala Quincy will be disappointed. This is just a ton of brooding melodrama that is more concerned with family secrets and interactions than anything else.

The lead character is supposedly a card-carrying atheist, but he is portrayed as a bumbling oaf who can't go two minutes without a cigarette, a shot of alcohol or some sexual innuendo with his "niece".

We are "treated" to the vicarious thrill of watching absurdly wealthy people flaunt their lifestyles and possessions. It is actually pretty disgusting. Must everyone on TV be some aristocratic lord with more money than Bruce Wayne?

Green Book (2018)

Emotional, inspiring, uplifting, and above all hilarious.
9 February 2024
Think4Yourself thinks... (5 stars). Emotional, inspiring, uplifting, and above all hilarious. Green Book is a canvas upon which two of this generation's great actors paint a marvelous story of friendship, responsibility and nobility. Viggo's outlandish behavior is consistently funny, as Mahershala provides the consummate straight-man while providing an emotional core to the narrative. This kind of film could have easily devolved into sappy, sentimental and predictable, but Peter Farrelly kept the tone light much of the time, allowing the emotional moments to stand out brightly. Green Book is a fresh take on a story we've seen many times on film.

Way to pander to the lowest common denominator.
21 October 2023
Think4Yourself thinks... (Two stars). Way to pander to the lowest common denominator. Is this the way movie creators see us, or is this the way they want us to live? Every household consists of a single parent, their several kids, their mom or dad, a grandkid that they are raising, an ex that lives next to them, and another ex trying to get custody of one of the kids. Add alcohol to every scene (adult or child), and make up as much drama as possible by having everyone behave in the most disruptive way they can imagine. Oh, there's also a story wedged in around ten percent of the run-time. It is a waste of a good actor.

What's with all the negativity?
18 October 2023
I can't believe the low ratings for this movie. It was spot on when it comes to the American Con from all. They weren't mean, it was just another day in that decade. It isn't the caliber of Fargo, but it has some of the same humor at how silly humans can be when they pursue what they perceive as happiness. What a mess.

Matt Damon did an admirable job playing against his normal type. I loved the scene as he tries to get away on a child-sized Schwinn.

The child actor was completely believable and hopefully this is his career choice and not something the parents are pushing him to do.

Watch it with an open mind and enjoy the dark comedy.

Weird
20 February 2023
There was nothing cruel about this but it was weird. I don't think if the ape could talk it would choose to stay. The expression on the ape's face was total disinterest. Stop anthropomorphizing animals. They may be smart and share some human-like characteristics, but treating them as a roommate for 30 years is just freaky.

Giving Cheetah beer and cigars is conditioning him with your bad habits. Add a birthday cake and you are safely down the road to weirdo-ville.

If you die and these animals are left on there own, they can never return to the wild, be put in a zoo, or anything. Wild animals deserve to be left alone and enjoy there existence without human interference.

Think 4 Yourself thinks...

This is totally different from the movie I saw in the seventies, we'll call that modernization. I'm now in my sixties and was curious. I found it to be delightfully funny and entertaining. I don't know what all the critics were expecting, more realism? Its a fantasy story.

Downey is his witty self and the CGI animals were much more interesting than CGI car chases and explosions from lesser movies. The rest of the supporting cast do what's expected of them to drive the plot along, and I found them all engaging.

My wife feels like she was babysitting me, but enjoyed it.

Pretentious Music Video
9 December 2022
I flat out refuse to watch any more "movies" that are so unsecure in their product that they feel the need to insert a music video into every moment. The director can't show two people walking across a street without inserting blaring music over my speakers because they aren't sure how to convey emotion. They think the song will do their work for them.

Well that's it. I'm done. If I have to spend the rest of my days on this planet watching classic movies from the 1930-1950 era in order to avoid immature filmmakers then that is what I will do.

Bu...bye. Smell you later.

Lame drama instead of snarky comedy.

Think4Yourself thinks... (2 stars). The jokes that could have been made about movie advice or movie plots were key to writing a show like this one. Instead, the writers veered off into Lifetime movie quality soap opera. Jokes about late fees, rewinding videos, damage to tapes could have made for some biting satire.

Sorry for being repetitive, but that is what this show felt like to me.

Don't waste your time; watch the original.

This weak attempt to cash in on name recognition from the 1970s movie is just an excuse to show gun battles and silly revenge tropes. The producers could have used the device of the hero not being allowed to use a gun to showcase The Rock's great action moves. Instead, they go with a silly war-hero premise and escalate into a standard shoot'em up as quickly as possible. Then they pad it with drinking, exotic dancing, and an unrealistic romance subplot and "I love my Family" fantasy.

Buford Pusser's real story is much more fascinating and makes for a better movie without all the tacked-on stuff that Hollywood thinks is cool.

Think4Yourself thinks... (3 stars). Ed O'Neill is absolutely hilarious as usual, but Michael Angarano steals the show. It is a light, quirky movie that lifts your day. You will laugh out loud at the dry humor. Allison Janney and Melissa Benoist add just the right notes to keep this movie grounded. Kudos to Jennifer Morrison on her directorial debut.

Think4Yourself thinks... (4 stars). An unexpected delight. Gibson Frazier as Johnny Twennies breezes through this movie totally lost in the 1920's style of movie no matter what is going on around him. It is funny and a joy to watch. Bonus points for great jazz music and infectious dancing. Makes me want to do the Charleston.

I am so sick of this plot. Yes, we get it; the rich people of today are yearning for a return of a servant class that they can abuse and use at will. This is just the latest in a slew of films that are just propaganda to convince us plebes that being a servant isn't that bad; you should be happy to work in the big house.

Someone needs to remake this from the point of view of the "Booth" character, disillusioned with the American Dream and seeking redemption for the crimes he committed for this country.

Too much plot-pushing
7 March 2022
I've tried to watch this on two different occasions but the constant need to create "drama" and the lazy way the writers do that makes my head hurt. Creating situations is an art that the writers can't seem to do. I can see the wires on the puppets.

Torture porn

Think4Yourself thinks... (1 star). Who wants to watch hours of someone being tortured? Who is the audience, snuff-film admirers? What a waste of fine actors. I found that finishing this movie was... Unthinkable.

Propaganda film.
23 February 2022
Think4Yourself thinks... (1 star). Finally, a movie that gives a voice to all the poor, misunderstood property developers and exploiters of natural resources and that treats environmentalists like buffoons. Who new that the rich elites were so deserving of our sympathy and respect. Watching this movie makes me want to kick a polar bear in the gonads and burn a pile of coal in a State park.

Top notch acting, cool art and witty quotes.
20 February 2022
Think4Yourself thinks... (5 stars) The battle between words and pictures was entertaining and unique, and would have been plenty. I don't think the subplots of romance and alcoholism needed to be added to an otherwise fine movie. The acting was top-notch. Lots of cool art and witty quotes.

What's the point?
20 February 2022
Think4Yourself thinks... (1 star). My own little conspiracy theory is that movie-makers keep making these flicks about aristocracy and the servant class because the elites of this country are yearning for "the good old days" when everyone had to serve and bow down to them and they are just showing us peons how to act. I can think of no other reason they keep filming this crap. As for this particular story, I think we've all seen Yentl and Victor/Victoria. The shock is gone.

Mafia Press Agent
20 February 2022
Think4Yourself thinks... (2 stars). It looks to me from this documentary that Letizia was just the press agent for the Mafia. Rather than expose their actions as we're told to believe, it looks like she was just giving them the publicity they wanted. Her pictures of death just advertise what happens when you cross the Family and glorify their tough-guy image. You expose corruption by showing things they don't want known like meetings with politicians, deals with businessmen, payoffs to police. I'm sure the people of Palermo and Corleone already knew of the violence of the Mafia; this is not news to them.

Think4Yourself thinks... (1 star). This was uncomfortably weird. The situation and actions of the horror of the fabric never happened. Every circumstance involved us watching disgusting events happen. The dress was a plot device that was totally unnecessary.

Truth to power.
20 February 2022
Think4Yourself thinks... (8 stars). It was quite the feat to make an entertaining movie while still providing the public service of warning us about the dangers of allowing powerful people to abuse their office and the people that trust them. Just because a person claims to be the lord's representative, that does not mean that they are incapable of evil. Religion is just the mask.

You can't see me
20 February 2022
Think4Yourself thinks... (2 stars). Two thirds of the way through this snore-fest a side character sits at a table and makes a passionate speech about the world and the temporary nature of everything. That is the only interesting part of this movie. The rest is just people staring forlornly at walls or sunsets or the neighbors or each other, or watching a girl eat an entire pie in real time. Oh, I guess there's also Ben Affleck's brother walking around with a sheet pulled over his head for almost the entire flick. If that sounds entertaining then please seek help from a professional.

Deserved more seasons.
19 February 2022
Think4Yourself thinks... (6 stars). This was a delightful and inspiring story that was hurt by inconsistent writing that made the characters act in strange ways just to create drama and conflict. If they would have stuck to the main story this deserving show could have earned more than one season. It filled a niche that is under-represented on TV, a light, friendly story that revolves around science and nature and ambition. The cast was entertaining and Lee Ingleby did a fine job as the lead.

19 February 2022
Think4Yourself thinks... (10 stars) I had no idea what to expect before or during this movie; it just kept surprising me with its offbeat and innocent humor. The cast is so good that I searched for them in other films. This is just the movie to brighten your day without a hint of that saccharine sweetness that usually permeates other films of this nature.

Think4Yourself thinks... (9 stars) Watched once and will watch again. This is one of the few good movies that offers a positive view of independent, progressive values. It is a much needed and refreshing change of pace from the typical movies that promote the status quo.
