The Philadelphia Story (1940)
The best movie ever
Another one of the best performances (and her tastiest film) was Katharine Hepburn's part as Tracy Lord. She was really devoted to that part, because of her previous slumps. I believe the part of Tracy Lord was personally relevant to the varying states of her career. Her marriage to C.K.Dexter Haven can be seen as an allegory to career: 1. a wonderful beginning looked back upon with nostalgia (see scene with Tracy in the pool with the model boat, "My she was yar"; compare to early roles like 'Morning Glory') 2. The Box-Office Poison phase (with Dex's snuff of Tracy at the doorstep as rather potent symbolism, that is, Kate herself being 'snuffed' by the movie-going public) 3. Her use of the Broadway version of 'The Philadelphia Story' as a stepping-stone to a new, more powerful career {shown quite well in the movie as Mike lifting her up, dazed from drinking, (or is that her dazed from many "failures" in the public's eye) and essentially delivering her to Dex's side} 4. Her return to glory , ironically with this movie (her 'remarriage' to Dex, did she plan this all out!!!!) Not to mention that Tracy's relationship with Dexter seems to follow Katharine's professional relationship with Cary Grant, some flops followed by an amazing bounce-back performance, leading to never-ending bliss. Her best movie, hands-down!!!
Break of Hearts (1935)
Break of Hearts
This love story was actually good. Philip Moeller did not make this movie what it could have been. A better director such as George Cukor (who was familiar with Hepburn) would have made the scenes much more enjoyable. Katharine Hepburn does a good job of the aspiring composer and Charlie Boyer as the Great Franz Roberti, conductor. The two both have too much pride instead of talking things over, which is relatable. It's also surprising how Hepburn and Boyer got away with slamming each other with insults of their promiscuity. All in all, it was a good movie for Hepburn to do in her early career, and fans of her will enjoy it.
