Indie Game: The Movie (2012)
So amazing...so real!
This documentary is truly amazing. I'm almost at a lack for words about how insanely great it is! What it manages to do is what most normal "game-making" documentaries cannot, and that is to show the pure human emotion in its absolute raw form. It's so easy to connect and to understand the people portrayed in the film. The two most impressive scenes must be Phil Fish at PAX, seeing his game freeze up and trying to fix it on the spot, and Edmund, near the very end, when he talks about how Super Meat Boy could have influenced children into doing the same thing as him. Truly this documentary isn't just about the making of 3 great games, it is more about the human emotion, the human element behind each one. Hearing the creators explain their motives and their inspiration for each of the games was probably most interesting by far. Furthermore the intense, different reactions to seeing the game's success are portrayed nearly perfectly in the film, with the reaction to braid's success being the most surprising of all. In conclusion, although this may be a terrible review for such a great movie, all I can say is: GO AND BUY THIS, RIGHT NOW! Honestly, just stand up and do it. You will not regret it, especially if video games and the process by which they're made interests you.
Prometheus (2012)
Good in its own right...but a bit deja vu.
I'm going to go out and say it. I really liked Prometheus. It was a really good movie, with a great story, great visuals, amazing character development, and some pretty good 3D. Oh and it was also thought-provoking. One thing that I wish I could describe the movie as, but sadly can't, is original. For people who have never seen Alien, I'd say that this movie is great! For the others though, I can almost guarantee an ever growing sense of deja vu, with them eventually realizing that they're watching the exact same movie, just with worse execution but better visuals. At the very least, that's my overall impression of the movie.
Yet, even so, I must admit that several elements of this movie are flawless, with those mainly being the overall atmosphere and the visuals (this being a 3D movie, I cannot stress this enough...it looks good...really good). The acting overall was decent, with only a handful of times when the characters weren't believable (although this could be in part due to the plot). The plot, the plot, the plot. It's really sad that my main problem with this movie is the plot. Throughout the film it just seemed to me as if the script of Alien was copy pasted and every instance of "Xenomorph" was replaced with "Engineer" or "Snake-like crawling thing". Furthermore, it must be noted that the final reveal seems to have been put in as an after- thought, a kind-of fan-service, which in truth only raised more questions than it answered.
In conclusion, Prometheus is a good film. A really good film. Sadly it's not original, and fans of Alien, expecting to see something new will most likely be left disappointed. In any case, go and see this movie, it certainly won't do you any harm.
