The Valhalla Murders: Crossroads (2020)
Rushed weak characterization - Part II
The issues regarding to Arnar's plotline continue into this episode from S1:E5 "In Plain Sight", where this character's antagonist is presented as two dimentional.
The dialogue in this episode, inbetween Arnar and his sister Laufey, pretty much proves that no real thought was given to the antagonists in Arnar's plotline.
In this dialogue the viewer is presented with a hodgepodge of afterlife theories that Laufey's religion does not subscribe to. Why? Because it conveniently moves the plot forward to an indulgant and generally inconsequential fight inbetween Arnar and Generic Evil Religious Fanatic Character #1.
You would think Arnar's actions in that scene would result in some complications later on. After all, he was repetitively asked to leave a private residence and choose to assault Leifur until the latter was bloodied and unconcious. But this lack of consequence only proves Leifur is of no real importance to this series, or this season.
Perhaps Arnar could face arrest and prosecution in the next season, causing him to be hindered in further investigations in this case. But this could have been introduced in this season, adding more depth to his arch. And I don't see how a second season could be sustained unless additional, serious complications percist from the subplots in the first season.
The Simpsons: Bart vs. Itchy & Scratchy (2019)
Bone Dry
The Simpsons has reached a new low tonight by representing pretty much all of their young male characters as female hating imbeciles, feeding the fictional premise that certain films and comedy specials are failing due to this blind hatred.
The problem of course is that even fans of the female stars involved know that the material was the issue, not the female actors and comedians. But unfortunately lacklustre comedians like Amy Schumer think they're this generation's Lucile Ball or Gilda Radner because they were able to score specials on Netflix and don't understand that a critic's genitals are irrelevant.
People have different tastes and when it comes to female comedians I personally lean towards Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders, Carrol Burnet, Tina Fay, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Jane Curtin, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Lily Tomlin, Leslie Jones and Melissa McCarthy. And when it comes to strong female leads I prefer Sigourney Weaver, Jodie Foster, Linda Hamilton and Noomi Rapace.
I've enjoyed Sarah Bullock, Cate Blanchett and Anne Hathaway in several films but films do fail regardless of the cast, mainly because of the shallow plot holes and characters. That happens regardless of the appendages of certain critics.
Unfortunately The Simpsons writers haven't considered that and have pushed out yet another dry episode that very few of their fans can relate to, including long time fans like your truly.
It's getting harder and harder to sympathize with any of the characters now so I find myself barely laughing at The Simpsons, this episode being one of the least funny episodes i've encountered.
This is definitely not an episode i'd pay to download and the season is not going well.
Signs (2002)
None of which were stop signs...
I've read the comments and I was surprised people thought it was scary or innovative. It was neither. It was boring.
Yes, Sixth Sense was great but Signs is a weak film. Seriously, how fortunate was the main character to have his planet invaded by aliens six months after loosing his faith because of his wife's death ! And what an invasion !
Do yourself a favor and rent Alien instead. Actually, don't if you thought this film was scary !
2001: A Space Travesty (2000)
Very disappointed!
As a Zucker Adams Zucker fan I would say this is the worst film Leslie has appeared in. It isn't funny, at all. The pacing of the film tries to compensate for its non existent humor. Avoid this unredeemable film.
A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001)
Somewhat interesting but derivative.
This film is basically a cross inbetween Pinochio and "Bicentenial Man". The special effects were great and the characters were interesting but it was merely a more modern and visual fable with a simplistic plot, the main character seeking to become a real boy.
Like "Data" of the Star Trek TNG films, David was built with an emotion chip that could be turned on but unfortunately for the poor David, his couldn't be turned off resulting in the defensive "I am a real boy", or variations of this phrase, and the occasional aggresive response when his individuality was questioned. I believe the character failed to progress and therefore could not gain empathy from most viewers, this character's emotional reactions being as programmable as Teddy's, who objected to his abuse and mishandling. To quote the Borg Queen, David was "An imperfect being made by an imperfect being" ; A android created to fill a void that is disposible when conflicts arise.
I'd give this film a eight on ten, additional point having been given for the visuals and entertaining characters. And no, i'm not that big a Star Trek fan. :)
Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles (2001)
Acceptable film but no comeback (quick review)
Fans of the first two films will probably like it, but not love it. Yes, there are the occasional chuckle but it is a rather dry film compared to the first two films in this series ; The best scenes are shown in the trailer and the official site and the comedy is rather tired and labored.
If I had to rate the film, I would say it's a five on ten ; The ending was rushed, the confrontation in-between Mick Dundee and the villains being quite short. Definitely no Crocodile Dundee II but a good rental (or purchase if included in a trilogy).
