Männer wie wir (2004)
yet another bunch of tired clichés about gays
When I went to see this movie it was already a forced choice, as my original intent was sold out. what ensuited then was sheer terror, this movie is so bad i could hardly bear it. the story is not worth mention, a gay goalkeeper forms a gay soccer team to play against his old straight team who - on discovering his sexual orientation - gave him a hard time. loaded with unbearably old and overused clichés of gays, the thin plot matches perfectly the inane dialogues... it is absolutely astonishing that actors as dietmar bär or charly hübner waste their talent and time on such nonsense. 1/10
Anger Management (2003)
Quite nice
--- SPOILER ----
I saw this film yesterday and I quite liked it, which is mostly due to the lovely trio of main actors (namely sandler, nicholson and the gorgeous marisa tomei) AND the unforgettable cameo appearance by woody harrelson rather than the story. some of the therapeutic techniques are ironized quite cleverly (i say this as a student of psychology), nicholson relishes in his comic buddy rydell, sandler (who was great in "punch drunk love") succeeds yet again as a pitiable underdog who is being pushed around. Only drawback the tacky stadium-romance ending, with rudy giuliani (what's HE doing there?) and half new york witnessing sandlers marriage proposal. yuk. however, getting there is fun enough. vote : 7
Pane e tulipani (2000)
joy of life
this is a very nice movie, especially the italian original has a lot more nuances to offer than the dubbed versions I've seen so far. the typical live of the italian housewife and "mamma" is turned upside down during a trip to venice after her family forgot her at a highway petrol station - the development of the main character is simply beautiful, as is the icelandic waiter that causes this change.
Zoolander (2001)
MAGNUM!!!
I'm a fan of this film. I don't know why, the first time I went to see it in the cinema I wasn't even convinced that the money was well spent. Yet seeing again you recognize how many great comic and nonsensical elements the film has to offer... the gas station scene, the walk-off, the Mulder-Hand-model... a must see, and a cult movie for me.
Da zero a dieci (2002)
hmmm
I went to see this film about a week ago and I must say that although I appreciate Ligabue as a musician, this film has become even more shallow and, I hate to say, insignificant than his last, radio freccia. In fact, it's the music that makes the film worthwhile to watch, beginning with the who's baba o'riley, the initial sequence grips you with the idea of giving votes from 0 to 10 to every event in your life, but unfortunately it drifts off in to the dreary problems of thirty-somethings shortly after that. the low point is the musical scene in the middle, that is supposed to mark the climax of the film but is just plain superfluous and an ache to watch.
Tillsammans (2000)
nice and charming
This a nice little movie about human relationships in a 1975 pseudosocialistic community with lots of lovable, colourful characters. It's never boring, always funny and gives some great insights about what makes living together both easy and hard without ever even getting near the gooey clichés of comparable "major" movies
Les rivières pourpres (2000)
a dark and gloomy psycho-thriller that's still good fun
I had a mixed feeling about going to see this movie, partly because of the mutilated descriptions offered by the media (dark, gloomy, sometimes revolting depiction of carcasses) and partly because of the artyness often involved in french films. To my surprise, both of my doubts worked well for the film, it's entertaining, but never superficial, the actors always live up to their roles without showing off. The quarrel between the old pro investigator (Jean Reno) and his unwanted sidekick from the province (Vincent Cassel) offers much fun throughout without ever being ridiculous; the murder mystery creates suspense right up to the end (which is a bit of a let-down, I must admit). A good film, no doubt, and for many reasons way above your usual Hollywood thriller.
Breakfast of Champions (1999)
a tour de force of the human psyche at the turn of the millenium
Dazzling, incredible, stunning, this movie sees Bruce Willis at his absolute best : Far from the macho-self-assuredness of his prior action roles, he staggers through a world gone utterly mad, only barely keeping up the facade of civilization. A must see.
