Not as bad as people make it out to be
22 August 2022
The film isn't as bad as most reviews make it out to be.

Perhaps I am biased. But I was quite delighted to see Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss on screen together again. Neo and Trinity are such a treat to watch, even after all these years.

It's obviously not half as good as the other films in the series. But it's not unwatchable. It's quite a fun watch, in fact.

I particularly enjoyed the postmodern metafictional episodes. The Matrix series has always come across as an embodiment of the postmodern hyperreal to me. And this film was no different.

I am not making grand claims on behalf of this film. All I'm saying is that I had a 10-hour long flight and this film kept me entertained in between naps.

This novel deserves a good adaptation which it still doesn't have
18 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It's not as bad as I was afraid it would be. I guess it's really difficult to entirely ruin a story as good as the novel's.

The first part of the film is actually pretty good. The younger actors do a fine job. The actors who play the leads once they have grown up are terribly cast.

The film is well shot. Very tactile. Close up focus at times. It captures the mood of the moors well.

But they have botched the beauty of the story. First of all, the film focuses solely on rhe first part of the novel, and has no reference to the later generation. It romanticizes Heathcliff without showing what Monstrous actions he commits after Cathy's death.

Another major problem is that the focus is solely Heathcliff, and slightly Cathy. Edgar Linton has no screen time at all. The ambiguity of the novel is entirely absent in the film. It is a pretty one sided romanticization of Heathcliff.

A brilliant show that goes wrong as it progresses
27 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The first few seasons are brilliant. Fantastic actors. An absolute delight to watch.

But it loses momentum as it progresses.

Of course, the last season is a disaster because of the Kevin Spacey scandal and his abrupt departure from the plot.

But the show starts failing even before that.

A show that starts off brilliantly, loses track halfway through and ends in meaningless chaos. Still, I'd say it's worth watching.

Considering that the script had to be rewritten after Spacey was removed, I guess it was quite impossible to come up with a better ending.

Enjoyable watch
10 June 2022
Quite an interesting watch.

I particularly loved Michael Sheen as Tony Blair. And might I say I enjoyed Helen Mirren's performance as the queen much more than I did Olivia Colman's?

I'm not getting into the historical authenticity of each scene. And I personally feel like the film grants a certain degree of impunity to the royal family. But, as a film, it's enjoyable.

Breezy feel good watch: one star less just for the finale
21 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
One of the most enduring 90s comedies. When it appeared on TV, it changed the genre of sitcoms. And it is equally fun to watch today after more than two decades.

A show where nothing matters, no one cares about anything. Nihilist comedy with memorable, iconic characters. As they say, it's a show about nothing. Just everyday life and conversations. No love story, no mushy emotions.

It has many seasons and many episodes, which was a good thing for me. Could spend several months watching it and chilling.

Yes, some of the episodes and some of the jokes are outdated and offensive today. But I'd say it's a good window into society and pop culture of the time. It's interesting to know that these occasionally sexist or bodyshaming jokes had such a massive viewership.

Spoiler alert: Notwithstanding how good most of the episodes are, I'll say that the finale of Seinfeld is the worst finale I've come across in any sitcom. Let me put it this way- it feels like the Game of Thrones of comedy.

I didn't dislike season 1, might even have recommended it for a casual watch. But season 2 is a bummer. Lacklustre, lame jokes. Predictable plot. You couldn't care less about the characters. No emotional connect.

A film that will haunt you. A must watch.
8 September 2021
It is a fantastic film. Very gripping and moving.

It is beautifully shot. Every single song is top-notch. Simply amazing.

Very well researched and well made. The parallel storylines work incredibly well together. It is good to see an Indian film on 1971 which shows something apart from the military glory of India.

Totally a must watch.

Another film on 1971 with zero respect for history
7 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The premise could have been utilised to make a much better film.

The first hour, in spite of glaring flaws, is still watchable. But then it goes downhill pretty quickly.

Several actors have tried to do a good job, mainly the supporting cast. The female lead, Mouni Roy, is just too bad. You can't possibly take her seriously as a diplomat-cum-spy.

Glaring plot holes. Things happen just too easily and conveniently in the film. Predictable to the core. You already know what is about to happen.

Absolutely unnecessary sex scenes, songs and chase sequences.

No respect for history. Ultimate distortion. Unacceptable climax.

A rare Bollywood film about Muhajirs
3 September 2021
I always knew that this film was a huge flop. Released along with Kaho na Pyaar Hai, it never came close to the latter's box office collections.

I happened to watch this film two decades after its release and, to my pleasant surprise, it's not bad. The premise and the setting are fascinating. The story is intriguing and different from everyday Bollywood dramas.

Yes, it is melodramatic. And Kareena Kapoor is intolerable in places. It's absurd how she is made to sing and dance and be chirpy and bubbly in a film like this.

The ending is a bummer. But the film overall is worth watching. If not for anything else, then for the songs.

Unlike today's Bollywood nationalism, it's good to see that all Pakistnais are not unnecessarily villainised here.

Unpopular opinion
16 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I don't think the show is anything special. I believe this will definitely not live up to the test of time. It's just a lot of hype around it right now.

It starts off well. But by the penultimate episode, things are going downhill fast.

Kate Winslet is amazing and a treat to watch undoubtedly. But then the show becomes all about her. The title itself gives it away that she is all that matters.

Spoiler alert: The final reveal is so ridiculous and unconvincing. The ending revelas the sloppiness of the entire plot structure.

Why don't people talk about this show more?
10 June 2021
It's such a beautiful series, with intricately etched out characters and deeply explored emotions. The show was an emotional roller coaster ride for me- loving and hating characters. Each character's psychology is delved into. You feel like you don't care much about certain characters but still you realize that, at some level, you do. The characters are so human with their flaws and their eccentricities.

Throughout the show, the reality of human mortality is driven home to us. Everyone you know, everyone you love will ultimately die. Yes, it's sad, it's depressing. But it exudes warmth, it makes you appreciate what you have.

What a beautiful way of telling the story of the impermanence and brevity of life!

Twin Peaks (1990–1991)

This is the weirdest TV show I have ever watched. And I mean it in a good way.
16 May 2021
I don't know how to put it in words really. It's a strange cocktail of myriad genres- crime thriller, sitcom, magic realism, science fiction, psychological horror- the list goes on.

Also, it's not for the faint-hearted; it's not a light show for killing time. Rest assured that after finishing the show, you'll be doing a lot of research trying to find explanations. You can't just move on to the next whodunit. Twin Peaks will keep bothering you.

The show is definitely way, way ahead of its times. It's understandable why it is considered to be such a cult show. Twin Peaks is a phenomenon. Apart from so many other fantastic things about the show, special mention must be made of the music. It's simply mesmerising. The most beautiful soundtrack and song selection.

A very different experience
1 May 2021
It's a film very different from any other I've watched. The acting, the music, the cinematography- it's all superb. It's a very quiet and subtle film. You need to let the film sink in.

However, to some extent, I have felt somewhat disconnected and sensed a little lack of engagement.

Nowhere close to the novel
27 April 2021
I understand how difficult it is to transform a best-selling novel of this level of popularity into a film. But even while keeping this in mind, I have to say that I felt an emotional disconnect with the film. A film adaptation of this novel was expected to have many more touching sequences. A couple of scenes were well-made but the film does not capture the emotions of the novel, not even close to it.

Bad screenplay. Only good thing is the acting.
11 April 2021
Disappointed after watching the film, having heard such marvellous reviews.

Rajkumar Rao has done a fantastic job as the protagonist. But Hansal Mehta has done so much better than this in other films.

The screenplay is not up to the mark in any sense. We are jumping from one scene to another, without spending adequate time on important details. Omar's initial arrest, release, flight hijack, role in 9/11- everything is flipped through at a very fast pace while we spend such a long time on him luring foreigners before abducting them.

Also, the conversion of the LSE student to a jihadi is pretty unconvincing. Should have been explored at greater length.

It's a classic thriller

A super fun film to watch. Thoroughly entertaining.

A late 90s take on film noir with a characteristic femme fatale and good cop/bad cop along with a Hollywood backdrop. Great actors and engaging storytelling.

Brilliant Biblical allusion
8 March 2021
Fantastic film. Very engaging and moving. Truly commendable costume design. The Biblical allusion in the title is apt. Although the plotline with the FBI seem a little contrived, the scenes with the Black Panthers are nothing less than fantastic. I wish the characters of the FBI agents were a little more fleshed out. Nevertheless, it's a brilliant effort to bring clarity to the complexities of the times.

The film has the perfect hollowness and empty bombast, the kind needed for a blockbuster.
10 January 2021
Can be entertaining for hardcore DC fans but otherwise, a disappointment. Spectacular visuals, but that's all, it's an empty spectacle, hollow from within. Hackneyed storyline, threadbare plot, stilted dialogues. The gaps of logic are gaping at you. There is hardly any reference to Diana's Amazon past depicted so interestingly in the previous film. And will someone please explain to me why 1984? It just as well could have been any other year. There is no significance whatsoever for the choice of the year. Why the unnecessary globetrotting? What was the need to take us to Egyt for no reason?

Why such evil depiction of women?
9 January 2021
The film starts off well, comes across as clever in several scenes. However, ultimately, it's a strictly one-time watch. I have a major problem with the portrayal of women. Almost all major female characters in the film are depicted as cunning, money-minded opportunists. Pretty disappointing and infuriating, coming from Anurag Basu. Good music, some great performances, some witty dialogues and well-made scenes. But ultimately, the plot falls through.

For a change, an Indian show that doesn't assume the audience to be dumb
5 January 2021
A very well directed, well narrated series. Excellent choice of cast. No melodrama, no nonsense. I have become a fan of Pratik Gandhi. He has delivered a scintillating performance, absolutely flawless. The music is fantastic. Wait till the end for the beautiful song that plays in the last scene. I didn't understand all the technical details because I have never studied commerce and have not been involved in the share market. However, I truly appreciate the fact that the show does not shy away from jargons. It is rarely that Indian TV shows or films do not assume the viewers to be mind-numbingly stupid. I appreciate the fact that the series does not steer clear of share market technicalities and, instead, makes an effort to familiarise the audience with them.

We have come a long way from 'Kramer vs Kramer'.
2 January 2021
This is an elegant film-witty, painful and full of wry humour in all the right ways. The scenes and dialogues beautifully depict the complexities and nuances of relationships. Particular mention needs to be made of the spine-chilling, powerful confrontation scene between the protagonists, which demonstrates exactly why the marriage broke apart even though the couple are still quite clearly in love. Little instances of intimacy, even during the worst stages of conflict, are beautifully portrayed. The thin line between love and hate that the protagonists traverse are a wonderful artistic depiction of how small mistakes and eccentricities appear like crimes when the relationship falls apart.

Here's a review from one of Summer's supporters
30 December 2020
I think many of us can connect with the film at a personal level. I am sure many are connecting with it because they have been dumped for apparently 'inexplicable' reasons by seemingly heartless women. All I can say is that the film reminded me of men who refuse to acknowledge where exactly and why the relationship went sour. Just like the film, drowning under Tom's perspective, refuses to show Summer's justification for the breakup. I guess interpreting it solely from the male point of view is an easy and common mistake. It is convenient to fall into this trap because of the insanely patriarchal screenwriting. However, one needs to keep in mind that there is no proper background or characterization for the heroine. She hardly even has decent dialogues. No explanation of her motives. Not a single scene through her eyes. She is just a romanticized figure in the hero's imagination. If you have been rooting for Tom all the way, may be you can re-watch it to acknowledge the problematic characterization instead of wallowing in sympathy for Tom.

Frighteningly relevant
19 December 2020
Fantastic direction and casting. A very engaging watch. The present- day implications of the film all over the world are frightening. It could connect really well with recent developments in India. The film not only manages to capture the dysfunctional nature of the justice system but also successfully depicts the schisms within the left. At times, the circus in the name of court trial appears to be an enactment of Kafka's 'The Trial'. A must watch.
