Wow! Here's a sequel that delivers the goods
2 August 2003
Incredible. Who could have guess that a Terminator film without James Cameron can be this good? Seeing the trailers, this seemed like another stupid action flick trying to make money out of the Terminator name. Well, how far from the truth I was!!!! There's actually a script that develops the story and characters we all love and takes us into new and exciting ways. You just have to see the end to see what I mean. Arnie....Oh my god!!! Just when I thought his career was over here comes the proof that given the proper material he kicks booty!!!! Kudos to Jonathan Mostow. I loved his first outing (Breakdown) and didn't care much for U-571, but Rise of the machines is one exception to the rule big summer blockbusters are just mindless s***. I never thought a third film could be that good.

EXCELLENT
8 March 2003
This film shows how to treat superheroes' stories right. Everything here, from the cast to the screenplay works wonders. I specially was nicely surprised by Afleck's performance. Being a DD's fan I think he embodies the soul of Matt Murdock, the man without fear. Definitely better than Spider-man and X MEN (witch I greatly enjoyed). In some regards has some similarities with the first Batman. But, this one is definitely better. Mark Steve Johnson, please do Born again as the sequel. PLEASE!!!!!

FASCINATING
23 November 2002
Few movies can convey such stirring emotions. This one explores how easily our society can collapse in a split second. Plus, the troubled trio of main characters add to the tension of the experience. The first scene of the film is truly awesome. A group of wolves in the woods ripping the body of an animal. It shows us what the movie is all about: once our rules and laws don't seem to apply no more, we are back in the jungle. I also like very much the way the characters are constructed. These are real persons, believable (a marriage on the edge, accentuated further by the visit of the couple's friend) put under extraordinary circumstances. I have developed a strong affection for this movie over the years. I specially like to watch it alone at night. I never get tired of it. Great directorial debut for David Koepp. Kudos also for James Newton Howard's eerie score. One of my favorites and a gem to discover and to think about!

Gem flick
14 June 2002
I had not seen this movie for a few years. I couldn't remember much, but today I gave it a try and boy... What a blast! Maybe I was too young then (I'm 24 now) or else, but the thing is I absolutely love this film!!!!!. This a classic werewolf tale told for adults. There are no cheap tricks, no wooden acting, no unnecessary gore. This movie has a great cast, a stylish direction and a marvellous script. In a way is a Marvel comic for the adults brought in it's full glory to the screen. A man beaten by an animal and getting his powers (Spider-man anyone?): sharp smell, great strenght, well... you get the picture. Nicholson and Pffeifer make such a great couple. The lines they throw at each other are just wonderful (the kitchen scene is outstanding). Plus we have a Morriconne score...What else can we say? An overlooked gem! Comic-book buffs check it out!

A truly space epic!!!!!!
31 May 2002
This is by far one of the best space epics I've ever seen. The characters are compelling and interesting, the story truly epic. I know this film has been criticized for its apology of violence, but those who say that, don't understand Verhoeven sense of humor. Dark, very dark. In the same manner displayed in Robocop (Ed Neumeyer was also the writer of that one, if I'm not mistaken). We do feel we are watching a true universe, which by the way is amazing. Look at the starships (massive), the battles (awesome), the bugs....man I do love this movie!!!! The music by maestro Poledouris is magnificent as always. Just hearing Klendathu's drop makes me shiver!!!! And finally kudos for Paul Verhoeven. Man you are a genius.

Best superhero film ever
27 May 2002
The story, the style, the music...everything makes this animated film the best superhero movie ever done. The series was a blast, but this film delivers better the goods. It's an adult and serious film, and by that I don't mean not suitable for children, but that it deals with adult themes such as responsability, wrath, love....what a good film should do. I always felt that the live action Batman films lacked many things, and this film proves it. The origin of the Batman, ala Year One, it's a joy to watch. Kudos for Bruce Timm and everyone involved!

WHY, OH WHY?
3 May 2002
I don't even know why I bother to write this. After watching "this", I can't understand the reason this "script" was chosen to become a "movie". Not funny, not interesting, no plot, nothing.....What a waste of money and time.

RoboCop 3 (1993)

A Frank Miller story
25 March 2002
Make no mistake, Robocop 3 is nothing but a fine comic-book by the work of the master of the genre, Mr. Frank Miller. Loving the first film of the series, one wonders how much of that film was influenced by the work done by Miller just one year before in the acclaimed The dark knight returns graphic novel (this novel is from 1986, whereas Verhoven's classic was from 1987). And I believe that by the use of the T.V screens as a technique for the story to progress and also by the concept of a future city, where the criminal run amock. So as the sequels are written by Miller himself, this technique even accentuates further. This second sequel is perhaps better than the first one, due to a much tight script and story. Plus, the return of Basil Poledouris to the scoring duties makes a nice touch to recover the spirit of the original. All in all, an entertaining comic-book translated to the screen. Don´'t ask for anything more (as the song says).

Dragonslayer (1981)
10/10
Best fantasy film ever
2 February 2002
I must say I' ve already seen The fellowship of the ring twice, and as long as I love this film, I still believe Dragonslayer is the best fantasy film ever done. You may say...WHY?? Simple, it deals with dragons, wizards, kings and princesses in such a way, you don't notice it's another world but ours in another age, long forgotten. I mean, here the dragon is truly a magnificent and frightnening dragon as anything you have ever seen. No talking CGI puppy, but a fiery beast (aided no doubt by the wonderful score by the late Alex North). And something very important, the monster is not shown in full nearly until the end (a device also used by Ridley Scott in Alien or Spielberg in Jaws), thus making the film very very frightening. Second the atmosphere feels truly authentic, real. No stupid character that provides "comic relief" (as it's known today), but real characters with motivations. Ralph Richardson as Ulrich, the last wizard of them all is a joy to watch. The special effects are sort of magical. I have never seen a mithological animal better done. No CGI stuff that nearly ruins every film If you think Willow or Krull are good films (Sorry I don't), wait until you see Vermitrax Peyoratis fly over the sky along with North's music. MASTERFUL!!!!!

The Birds (1963)

Possibly the best horror picture of all time
2 February 2002
The mastery Alfred Hitchcock displays in the Birds has no comparison to any other horror movie ever. First of all, the characters are perfectly described and no mere cliches that nobody cares for (very usual in this movie genre). I wouldn't like to point any of them, but I think Melanie (portrayed by the beautiful Tippi Hedren stands above the rest). Also Jessica Tandy as Rod Taylor's mother is equally standout. That's important, very important in this type of movie, cause when they face danger, we CARE about their fate. Second, the birds. I think the most frightening scene ever seen on the silver screen, is that of the siege of the Breener's house (Rod Taylor's family). We see nothing,..but we HEAR ,thus allowing our imagination to think freely. And most important of all, Hitch does not give us an explanation on the subject, nor does he gives us a happy ending. It's pure horror. A masterpiece

EPIC!!!!
23 December 2001
What an incredible achievement!! Peter Jackson and his crew have accomplished what many have tried and failed! The Lord of the rings by J.R.R Tolkien can´t be better translated into the big screen, that's obvious after watching this amazing display of movie-making. The actors, the landscapes, the effects, the pace of the film...All done to perfection. GO PETER GO!

Good flick
23 December 2001
Very interesting and compelling premise (four friends lost amidst a dangerous Chicago suburb who are being stalked after witnessing a murder). The pace of the film never slows a bit. Great performances by all actors, specially Leary. Highly recommended

Great confusion
29 April 2001
This classical film makes some people move so deeply because of the, some say, open questions it spawns. Others hate it because of the mentioned reason. What a shame!!! The problem is, in my humble opinion, that this was Kubrick's purpose. In order to make the film controversial, he left the story with many questions unanswered. I have to say I was one of the latter. But still, being a sci-fi buff as I am, I had some strange attraction towards the movie. And then, one day, I made one of the wisest decisions I could have done. I bought Arthur C. Clarke's novel based on the screenplay he and the late Kubrick wrote. And then, it was as if a light had touched upon me. I found an astonishing tale of epic proportions with a coherent storyline and that made me smile in awe!!! I could see what story 2001 tried to tell, but Kubrick thought, no doubt, that , as I said before, it would be better to left the most important issues open. Well, in that aspect he succeeded. Nowadays, in the real 2001, the movie is still discussed, but I think that it would have been better if Kubrick would have chosen to tell a story as the one portrayed in Clarke's novel. The film would have been still a wonder and as misterious but with a more coherent and understandable quality to it. I would have love to see the things the novel says, regarding Bowman's travel trough space, and not those stupid colors, some associate with the 60's. 2010 show us how wonderful 2001 could have been, if Kubrick wouldn´t have tried to be so pretentious. Also as a side note, I don't understand why it´s remembered by one of it's subplots (HAL's psycho behaviour) when the story is about mankind's evolution (as superbly portrayed in the apes's prologue with Richard Strauss' Thus spoke Zarathustra) Nevertheless, I recommend to watch it, but READ THE NOVEL FIRST!! (It would make the experience much more fascinating , I promise you)
