Are Bored Grad Students Innately Evil?
I really liked this movie. It had enough mystery to keep me interested.Although, I did guess the killer and Sonia's secret because of the sheer amount of mysteries I watch. Still, some nice twists, and an atypical ending.
When Gonzalo gets sucked deeper and deeper into his online fantasies, I couldn't help but want to warn Marta, his girlfriend to leave him. People are dropping like flies and he won't give up the thrills he gets from breaking into places suggested by the psycho in the chat room. She should have moved back in with her parents when the crank calls start, and sever all connections. This is not mentally healthy behavior.
Gonzalo's fling with Sonia was not convincing. Sonia lacked any qualities that made her sympathetic. You end up thinking less of Gonzalo for his involvement with her. She's slutty without being sexy, a hard feat to manage. She has no other attraction than being forbidden fruit. In real life, most men would dump her about ten minutes after sleeping with her. The only thing missing s the price tag.
I found this movie while looking for Tristan Ulloa movies. I've enjoyed everything I've seen him in so far. Admittedly, there's more I haven't, than have seen. I wish he'd do more English speaking movies. Subtitles are a pain. I fall asleep if I'm watching later in the evening. It was a surprise to see him as someone so psycho.
The lead was good, but for me, Ulloa had the emotional power in the flick. Maybe I'm getting a movie crush, but he really does have a special magnetism. Attractive without being all twisted steel and sex appeal. He has the kind of persona that most women I know would hope for when they want to meet someone real. Not in this film, though.
This flick was frightening for me because the anonymity of the internet really can bring anyone close to a killer without knowing it. Someone you chat with, CAN be setting you up for something dangerous. People can have a different identity online than in face to face encounters. It was the plausibility and the voyeurism that made it creepy. Worth a watch.
Ordeal by Innocence (1984)
The plot was wonderful, despite being buried in an overproduced, overstylized film.
I have never seen so much talent and money used to produce anything so bad in my entire life! As stated in other commentaries, a who's who of talent, such as, Christopher Plummer, Faye Dunaway, Donald Sutherland, and many more were thrown together in a film that is not recognizable as an Agatha Christie story. I keep thinking of how it could be with the same cast, done the right way.
The film has even less intimacy than the Christopher Reeves 'Superman' movies. The large cast makes the slick production even less effective than in those films, because there is not enough time to get to know anyone. Dave Brubeck's progressive jazz soundtrack had me wondering if the wrong video was in the the case from the rental store. The music became more and more offensive as the plot progressed. It's hard to say whether the soundtrack or the annoying technique of repeating information from earlier scenes, was more offensive. From someone who has seen most Christie films (that's what attracted me to this, it was one of the few I hadn't seen) miss this one. It is not an Agatha Christie movie. Golan-Globus are better suited to producing flicks about big time wrestling, rather than the snug atmosphere of English mystery.
