Tired Drama with Naxalite Luring
11 December 2020
Just finished the hyped movie by Debaloy, but to be honest, only to find it overhyped for no reason.

The story unfolds Raktim( Anirban) , a part time bengali teacher of a Govt High school having two unusually large canines - inducing insecurities among the people around him. On the parallel runs a story of '71s where Amal( Anirban) is a Naxalite , choosing rebellion before his beloved one played by Mimi. Later the movie feeds us a 'twist' where 'things are not as it seems' ; but could Debaloy merge it well with the storyline ? NO for me.

Direction is quite mediocre showcasing only Anirban on 90% of the frames. Acting-wise it's definitely not his best but reasonable. The tired scenes about '71s are overused in most of the books and earlier movies; hence nothing to shock. The BGM and songs are a big thumbs up, though they make the movie only more melodramatic. The storyline had promise, but not executed properly.

This movie is like a dress stiched up combining various colorful pieces of clothes- making the dress clownish. My recommendation is 15Park Avenue instead.

Action-Packed Raid !!
23 July 2020
Rama ( Iko Uwais) is a 'noob' fighter who has to join a special task force with officers Bowo, Dagu, Sergeant Jaka and Lieutenant Wahyu, apparently to catch a drug mafia of Jakarta slums named Tama Riyadi. But gradually the scene unfolds darker image of corrupt Indonesian officials. Seems like another boring rake on corruption vs nationalism types or one man army backed Ramboistic American wine resold in Indonesian bottle ? Well, then only you're being too imaginative from beginning.

The story takes another turn when the Special Tactics Officers are cornered by the pets of Tama and reduced to mere five in number. Their struggle towards survival is the main focus of the movie. I don't remember last when I had to witness so pathetic retreat process by Special Forces. But corruption can let everything happen.

The movie offers breath-taking moments of martial arts in many fight sequences, and those are shot with pro efficiency. Especially Mad Dog's ones. The music is equally thumping. Camera is apt for such thematic movie, and few dialogues are very economical, like "Just because you see what I do as wrong doesn't mean I can't be good at it" by Andi, the brother to Rama. The movie may discourage the audience about the internal corruption inside the system, but it also mentions that there may exist people like Andi, who loves to work for good despite being heavily indulged into crime ; or the mention of officer Bunawar, who despite enjoying a higher rank, doesn't sell himself for money .

Masterpiece
1 July 2020
Movie : The Painted Bird If Blake's Songs of Experience had any audio visuals, I think that won't be any better than this. Both are totally relevant with each other. By the way, here it's Kosinsky, whose novel is the inspiration for this masterpiece. The innocent brain, which is arguably a Tabula-Rasa after born, gets its lessons after each cruel confrontation of the circus called world.

Here the destiny of a Jewish boy makes him travel from one place to other on the backdrop of World War 2, somewhere in Europe, obviously encountering creepy situations by equally weird characters. The director consciously didn't make him utter any meaningful world except screaming. Each scene is an image. Thus, a result of careful creation and deep thinking, hence pieces of pictures in a canvas, sure to impact on our brains.

Language is not a big barrier here, dialogues are minimal, greater is the expression. The movie is shot fully in black and white, to keep that temperament. The cruelty of Nazi regime is brutally caught here.

The music is excellent, cinematography is tremendous. Feels like very natural. And the boy's expression - to me the best I've seen till now by any child actor. Those eyes literally talked.

The length of the movie, reaching to 169 minutes, may seem bit longer to modern eyes, but every second you invest here will give return in Gold.

Gulabo Sitabo (2020)
8/10
Superb
27 June 2020
Abhishek Chaubey's masterpiece Ishqiya(2010) was a great piece of black comedy. Shoojit Sircar's Gulabo Sitabo also deals with the same pattern - the two movies also demand a huge attention from viewers, in order to get accustomed with the characters and scenerio. It's not another Piku, or Vicky Donor, or not even October, that we are served readymade characters we see in our daily lives. The stories of black comedy are not liable to follow each and every logic. So , no need to find logic in every part, as the story demands.

Not everyday we see such a power-packed cast, of sharing total of 5 National Awards between the two main protagonists themselves. Expectedly, they delivered their best .

Aged 80, the famous miser Mirza Nawab (AB) tries to get the ownership of Fatima Mahal, where he lives. For this he takes help from cunning lawyer Christopher Clark .On the other side is Baankey Rastogi (Ayushmann), who is one of the tenants there, paying minimum rent. His intention is to get rid of Nawab anyhow - if it's by getting the Mahal occupied by force ( by Archeological Society, thanks to Vijay Raaz's Gyanesh Shukla). Between both of them, greed plays the pivotal role. They try their best by hook or by crook. Who will win this battle of finance ?

The story by Juhi Chaturvedi is mind blowing. From the animal stories of Aeshop's Fables to the modern day adaptation : there's only one ultimate moral - Greed is road to ruin. But what happens when both protagonists go for the same side of the coin ? Well, well, well...there is a huge climax waiting. But even after that, the director moves his magic wand at the very last scene of the movie- where we witness the real twist of fate. Yups, magic. Just Shoojit Sircar things.

Avik Mukhopadhyay did outstanding cinematography job by capturing the essence of the historical heritage of Lucknow. Shantanu Moitra does the musical job to the point. This movie to me will be under one of the best works by Shoojit.

Gripping
18 June 2020
93 minutes and four acts - seems like another Shakespearean Tragedy in four acts? Not at all. It's all about thriving feminism.

Marlina is a village woman, living on basic belongings: a small house, few cattle and a husband who is already dead when the movie opens. Shortly, we witness 7 knaves coming and interested to loot her belongings and then rape her. However, despite being raped by one of them, Markus, she beheads him and kills all of them but two.

She travels for the police station. On the way, she encounters pregnant talkative friend Novi. She repeatedly talks about her jealous husband Umbu . Then the story goes on with its own sweet pace, until the baby is born before the ending credits start showing off - but only after shocking the audience enough.

The movie has dramatic scenerio, dialouges, almost stock characters but an intriguing plot and eye-worming rural beauty. Some actions are absurd, yet so realistic, so abrupt. Acting is superb. The songs and BGM are just apt; catching the note in proper places. Editing is mind blowing, trimmed. Not even trying to feed with burden scenes. Overall, you can not overlook such a piece by Mouly Surya.

A STUNNER
30 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
For those who do not know about the director, he is the one who has the rare record of achieving national award (for Bakita Byaktigoto) among the herd of so called 'film directors' nowadays. He always stands apart from other directors in storytelling.

The title card of apparently lengthy movie (2:26:40) mentions that it's based on Srikanta (Part1). But if you try to compare both, it's futile. The director takes only the characters and some of the events as well as few rural sketches to build his story, from the veteran author. The story is set on modern time, but takes its journey to down memory lane throughout the screenplay. So, two timelines flow simultaneously until he fully builds all the characters.

A movie can have various techniques of storytelling, theoretically. Pradipta uses the methods of alternative reality, alternative timelines beautifully. Especially when he delivers the final blow, the climax. Spectators will expect another dull movie, and boom- the blow, the climax comes.

Commercially cinema-fed eyes will feel the first half tad dragged, boring. But as soon as the second half folds itself, it catches the pace.

Acting wise everyone seemed realistic; especially Ritwick. The songs are very aptly placed. Dialouges are few but crisp. Only the BGM is too loud sometimes.

NB: Those who are still wondering about what really happened at the end, which one is the reality and which one is reality, or is it open ended ; here is my view : actually all four of them met their inevitable destiny, death. The middle and last scenes of happiness were only the dream vision of both Srikanta and Rajlokkhi, coz they really longed for love throughout their lives.

Paatal Lok (2020– )
10/10
Hell Yeah
23 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Paatal Lok is surprisingly an oddball in the middle of a fair of typical crime mystery thrillers that baits a worm at the last to make a new season. Yes, it's apparently complete in itself; at least let's the viewers to sleep at night, but not sure if on an optimistic note. Comparing Paatal Lok with Sacred Games or Mirzapur is rather misguiding ; it is totally different from those, both from magnitude to temperament. As the name suggests, the show delves into the deep of our system; which is corrupted from the root hence, can not be reformed.

Hathi Ram Chaudhary (Jaideep Ahlawat), a middle class cynical police officer, having nothing but failure in life, gets a very high profile case when apparently four murderers are caught red handed attempting a murder of Sanjeev Mehra( Neeraj Kabi), a news tycoon. When he investigates deeper, he founds more than what he barely imagined. Jaideep gave his all to do justice to his character. Neeraj Kabi is always in form, Abhishek Banerjee needs a serious mention, and others too, did good job.

Mysteriously dark, the show is a real stunner; especially when it shows the pasts of four of the captives - equally astonishing and eye opener about real India. So real, so touching, so gruesome and so undeniable truth. From politics to underworld to business policy to religious intolerance to sexual assault to child abuse - every part is touched and touched with care. This Anushka Sharma produced show is my current favourite with a serious direction by Avinash-Prasith. Kudos to the four writers especially Sudip Sharma. The show is really worth a binge watching and then gives a scope to think about it for the rest of the time. Though, overall it also gives opportunity to give a new season to answer the fate of the two captives .

Engaging Thriller, though not total satisfaction
21 May 2020
A good thriller is possibly the best thing one should be dying for. But among millions of its genre, not too many movies make it a count. Some are great, some fall flat from the beginning, some make disappointed at the climax. Now only the viewers have to decide Ratsasan(translates Demon) will fall in which category. Vishnu Vishal performs as Arun, a wanna-be serial killer movie director turned police officer. He witnesses teenager schoolgirls in his city being kidnapped and brutally killed one after one, by a mysterious serial killer. He gets some hints; but always getting discouraged by his senior officers. Arun then single handedly investigates the matter and faces it's shocking consequences. Ratsasan, despite a tad long of 2 hours and 32 minutes, will make the viewers' eyes glued with the screen all the time thanks to its gripping events and twists. But somehow, viewers may have a little but disappointed at the last. The music and bgm is top notch. May be the best of its release year. The plot should have been more sharp and precise. Acting is satisfactory. Overall, Ratsasan is a positive welcome to the triller genre .

Awful
30 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I wish there would be any word which could express the combined feeling of overrrated, hype, a worst story and a big waste of 8 precious hours. Naturally, expectation was sky high after so much hype, but after a binge watching, ultimate gain is - only regrets why did I go for it.

In every review, I desperately want to give a synopsis about the story, but I think here the director himself doesn't know what the storyline is. DJ, a CBI head officer, is accused of murdering is wife and is sent to jail. Then Nikhil Nair, his student replaces him to do further enquiry on the series of serial killings in similar pattern. But eventually he is kidnapped by the serial killer just to help him doing further murders ? Why ? Later when the killer is caught, he says that he is not one, but many. When a ninja attack takes place from a coffin, all the officers die but magically Nikhil survives. Later, in absense of the computer expert, Naina Naik ,who has no connection with the CBI by far, suddenly becomes the main computer expert. Kesar is given overdose of drugs, but he seemed not even a bit affected. The plot is itself ludicrous. Furthermore, there are so much more loopholes that even the moon with so much holes will be ashamed. The murder of the young entrepreneur Aditya Jalan is shown in so bad way that a thriller lover would want to commit suicide. He is killed by venom mixed with his drinks, but no investigation was done on that. Later, when Inspector Lolark is killed, no investigation is done on that; everyone just casually accepted Rasool. The worst scene, probably, is the enquiry scene where DJ takes three pills to save humanity. Why the hell other officers sit outside and allow it ? No answer of that. What was the result of the third pill?

The direction pattern desperately tries to mimic Anurag Kashyap style and the photography is as much dull. All the actors presented substandard acting. The storyline reminds of many Hollywood movies prominently, from The last house to the left to Saw series; ultimately doing nothing. If you have hope to experience a catching thriller mixed with Hindu mythology, then Asur will surely raise your expectations, only to disappoint you till the last. A nothing plot, hilarious logic, predictable climax and weak direction is only the outcome of this Asur.

Tumbbad (2018)

MUST NOT OVERLOOK THIS ONE
28 April 2020
Film: Tumbbad(2018) Directors:Rahi Anil Barve, Anand Gandhi ImDB rating : 8.3/10 My rating : 7/10

Here comes one of those brilliant movies which are not only worth a gigantic visual experience, but also a tonic for brain. The initial scenes will make you confuse, but not after Vinayak Rao's entry.

Rao, who is a former villager of Tumbbad village, wants to become extraordinary rich in very short time. For that, he wants to explore the shrine where lies the curse of Hastar, the evil son of Goddess. Though, his mother didn't let him do it for years, after his mother's demise, he finally goes there and with some weird technique (which should best be due for watching) regularly brings golden coins. He sells those coins regularly to gain enough fortune and fame during the British Raj. Gradually, he is associated with corruption and sin.

The story takes a twisted turn when Vinayak's son is found to be more immoralized than Vinayak himself. The same greed is found on his eyes also, with a temper twice than him. He wants all the gold coins at once, reminding the viewers about the anecdote of the greedy farmer and the goose. But does it also show the same consequences like the greedy farmer ? What happens to Vinayak and his son ?

The director duo very skillfully develops the story under the picturesque time travel of British regime in India. The metaphorical presentation of Hastar is sure a thought provoking one. The dive of Vinayak into the chest of Hastar may be similar to that of our own brain, Bastar being the greed of human being. The last scene is a keel to the coffin of the same theory.

Lastly,it's no wonder that Tumbbad received eight nominations at the 64th Filmfare Awards winning three for Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction and Best Sound Design. It's one of those gems that one won't like to overlook.

The Family Man (2019– )
10/10
One man army
25 April 2020
Series: The Family Man (2019) Release: Amazon Prime Video Director: Raj Nidimoru and Krishna D.K

We had already seen Spy thriller in silver screen , the likes of Akshay Kumar's Baby and others. But what really distinguishes The Family Man with Baby is that, here the director and story writer mixes fun with thriller - and the result is 8 hour short of 33 minutes rapid watch. Yes, it's definitely unputdownable, especially for Manoj Bajpayee . The story in brief tells about Srikant, a TASC secret agent (like RAW) , who is assigned to catch those criminals associated with a possible attack on Delhi, the capital of India , and also predict their masterplan. But middle class person Srikant is , on the other hand, also a family man. Owner of a wife and two children, he always has to juggle between his work life and family life, often standing on the needle-point . The story goes across the zigzag path of twists and turns and captivates the viewers for sure.

Along with the top notch performances, stunning visuals and powerful dialogues, The Family Man also gives us bonus songs after ending of each episode, a big thumbs up. Though, the life of Srikant's wife's parts(Priyamani) sometimes feels tad dragged. But then also, we interpret many incidents which are not even shown on screen, thus saving the time.

Despite a crime thriller, it's genre is lot different than other contemporary of its similar type like Sacred Games and Special Ops, which is bound to make us travel the gruesome world of terrorism, but with a smile on the face most of the times.

One of the rare gems of its genre
18 April 2020
India, precisely Bollywood, is not too well known to produce chilling horror films or ghost stories. There were many attempts in past, from copying western stories to create some original score, but not very hopeful. There are some exceptions though, of which , 404 can be a frontliner.

Directed by Prawal Raman and enacted by actors like Nishikant Kamat and Tisca Chopra, 404 is surprisingly a brilliant movie in Horror genre.

A medical college student comes to live in the same room number 404, which is already notorious , because a student living there had committed a suicide. He is a rational one though, stubborn to stay there at any cost. But due to ragging by his seniors, gradually he stars to see hallucinations of the boy who had committed suicide. He belives that he is his room mate, and he is still alive. Meanwhile, the lecturer, Anirudh and his wife helps him to be cured. But do they succeed, or is there any deeper mystery than the surface water ?

Raman has brilliantly juggled with science and paranormal, never denying one to establish one. But the real surprise is the abrupt ending scene, which is sure to give goosebumps to even the most stern viewer. The ending is kept open to the viewers, enough to take away their night's sleep. Some scenes are little bit melodramatic though, the editing could also been shraded to some thinner. Overall, it is not a movie to be missed by filmyvorous people.

Mirzapur (2018– )

Must Watch for crime thriller lovers
18 April 2020
If you're an Anurag Kashyap fan, this is the kind of series only for you. Not negatively, but a huge positive. Amazon prime is making things not abundant, but oviously high quality stuffs. After galloping all the nine episodes at one go, one can hardly wait to pounce on the season two, which was due in 2020, but thanks to COVID19, it's a light year far now.

The story opens on the King of Mirzapur, a small urban town of UP, Kaalin Bhaiya (Pankaj Tripathi), who runs illegal weapons business and also drug deals. His son, Munna, an aggressive goon and college student, is aspiring Prince of Mirzapur. After Munna kills a bridegroom of a local marriage ceremony just for 'fun', local lawyer Pandit ji takes the case. The flow of events makes his two sons , Bablu and Guddu, to work for Kaalin Bhaiya. But in every step, Munna feels himself underrated and sidelined. Ultimately he decides to eliminate his competitor threats, one by one; including his father. Since then, shrewd chess-play of blood and return blood. Gore every single moment. Conspiracy, hunger for money, power and sex - one can only relate the characters who knows the situation in such places .

If you have a problem of heart, do not even dare to watch the trailer. The series shows the deaths and dead bodies, and blood the most horrible way possible, which can make you shiver even in broad daylight. There is no chance to get bored, or skip any part, thanks to very animating events and relatable acting, especially Vikrant Massey's Bablu Pandit and no doubt centre of all, Pankaj Tripathi's Kaalin Bhaiya. The title track and BGM is itself heart-render.

Overall, Mirzapur is a big thumbs up. It's gonna leave a permanent mark on the viewers' memory.
