O.J. Simpson: Blood, Lies & Murder (2023)
Little more than a snuff film
I was hoping this would be somewhat as good as OJ, made in America, which is a clear masterpiece. Of course that hope was well in vain or disappointed.
I'm not sure what psychoactive drugs the people who made this were on, but it was delusional to think it was a good idea to show this much death and gore. At first I was like, that's pretty interesting they're showing this because all the other documentaries on it, they show the death photos for a few seconds or not at all. But these people went to the line, crossed the line and then sailed to Antarctica past the line.
I'm not about to watch this garbage again to verify(I only made it to 49 minutes of it before I had to bail), but from what I recall, they showed death photos like 30 times in 20 minutes. Even more bizarre, they showed Nicole's dead feet 9 times in 20 minutes!! What was that about?
On top of all that it was boring. I understand that is the nature of the beast when you are going into the weeds on the evidence, but still.
Bunk'd: Finn It To Win It (2023)
Another boring, poorly written episode
The writing on this show has been really poor for awhile now. One of the very few good things about this episode was seeing Will Buie. The 3 plots were remarkably insipid and trite. Particularly the pig plot with Trevor and Alfred. That was one of the worst plots ever, up there with Buie's character dating a lawn mower.
One of the other plot points was so unoriginal and derivative, I was predicting what would happen before it did. I knew before it happened that Winnie would lock them in. She did. I predicted before it happened that Jake would come in and not rescue them, but have them in the same position they were before he came.
That plot story was also already done before. They did a similar one on Jessie when Stuart wanted some alone time with Zuri; and they also did it on Bunk'd when Jorge, Ravi and I think Griff got locked in an outhouse.
It appears to be long gone, the days when the writing was as sharp and fun as when they had Gladys and Xander and Hazel. The only sharp line or fun part was when Mallory said I look so pretty(mostly down to her excellent delivery of it) and Shiloh wanted to do her hair next and Mallory said what she said to that.
Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
The IMDB ratings let me down this time
I was really looking forward to seeing this movie as I didn't want to miss on three historic movies this year. The highest grossing film of all time in Avengers End game, and that movie is also supposedly one of the greatest movies of all time, the 9th highest grossing movie of all time in the Lion King, and this movie, which is rated as one of the greatest movies of all time. I don't care at all about seeing the Lion King as I'm not a child, and I was too slow to get around to seeing Avengers End game before it left the movie theaters. The rating system worked out perfectly when there was a high rating for Bumblebee, and I enjoyed that movie very much.
The rating system let me down immensely with this movie. It was just awful. The acting was solid, and that is all I can say positive about this movie. The movie was just plain boring until the end. More specifically, the movie felt like it was aimless. It seemed to have no point, or at least no point it was in any hurry to get to. A lot of the scenes felt pointless or unnecessary in advancing the plot. One of my biggest complaints from a technical standpoint was Tarantino's pacing was awful. Unlike the superb pacing of films such as Bumblebee, John Wick, Black Mass and Hell or High Water.
I hated everything about the movie. I hated the feel, I hated the dialogue. I even found Tarantino's foot fetish to be cringey and forced. When he had the naked feet on camera several times I was like rolling my eyes that this was so Tarantino-cliched and forced that it was cringey.
Even the exciting part at the end seemed forced and as if it was tacked on just to give it a climax. This is because it came out of nowhere. From what I recall at least, there was nothing prior to the attempted mass murder that would let you know the four were planning it. It was sprung on the audience ad hoc if you will.
It was funny because in the theater I was in, 3 Hispanics that were together walked out on the movie about 40 minutes before it was over, and that was actually the most exciting part. Man I hated this movie. I could tell by 22 minutes in it was not going to be any good, but I had no choice but to give it a chance since I paid $13 for it. So I was hoping it would get better, but it never did until the very end.
Another thing about the movie I hated was the narration. I kept thinking about Cinemasins on YouTube and them constantly complaining about exposition; which this movie did a lot of. I even checked Rottentomatoes to make sure the high rating was legit, and it also had a high rating of 85%. I'm not sure why the rating was so high. The script lacked cohesion and cinematic momentum building if you will. A perfect example of cinematic momentum building is Hell or High Water, Quills, Scarface, John Wick and Training Day.
I also hated all the parts in he movie where it was just music playing with the scene and no dialogue. It felt like too many times in this movie it was just a music video or musical concert.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017)
Deeply flawed movie
I really enjoyed this movie. But it has so many flaws. I give it a 9 based on how much I liked it; but all the flaws knock it down to a 7.
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)
This movie is very, very poor due to being Out-dated
The movie suffers from being out-dated. It is very difficult to appreciate the satire or message it tries to convey, when you don't live in a time of "Cold War", or constant Nuclear Threat.
You can imagine this being gripping indeed, coming off a scary historic incident like the Cuban Missile Crises, but it just doesn't hold that type of fascination in this day and age.
Finally, I must say the characters are annoying and the dialogue is painfully pretentious and irritating.
It is also a bit racist too, since the only person of color that I saw was James Earl Jones. I know it was 1964 and all, but that just underscores the irritating and never ending racism of America, and just adds another discredit to this painfully boring film.
Mononoke-hime (1997)
Pros and Cons for Princess Mononoke
The demon worms are gross, the female characters are annoying and obnoxious, and the movie is very clichéd, but it is a masterpiece, and it's hard to say otherwise.
The environmental message is very powerful!
They did a great job of getting their message across without it being too overbearing. They also made it engaging while at the same time teaching a lesson about humans and nature living in harmony. People who don't like the Anime genre, will still find this a worthwhile movie to watch. I think this film can appeal to children and adults since it holds elements for both.
