The Cossacks (1928)
Great movie, lots of action, fantastic condition
This film held up extraordinarily well, and the picture is better than a majority of films made in the following decade. I would expect nothing less from an MGM film, of course.
I really loved the costumes in this film. The acting was good, of course, especially with a very attractive John Gilbert as the lead. There are some moments where the story gets overly-complicated, but the writing process had to undergo several changes (at one point even the director was switched), but despite that, I think this was a great movie. It survived a myriad of drama off-screen to become an excellent adventure romance on screen anyway.
Mr. Meaty (2005)
A Great Show
When the first few clips of Mr. Meaty started to run on Nickelodeon, I'll admit it looked incredibly stupid. Two weird main characters who seemed to spend all of their time making up stupid things to do when they were bored. But when the 15-30 minute shows started to air, I realized it was an incredibly funny and creative show. Generally most kid's shows are recycled plot lines (not that there aren't a few in Mr. Meaty) and bad jokes...but Mr. Meaty was pretty creative. The main characters are a pair of teenagers named Josh and Parker, who work at (where else?) a fast food place called 'Mr. Meaty'. Now, this isn't your deep philosophical statement about life...that would be ridiculous for a kid's show. But it IS fun, and worth watching several times over.
Sleepy Hollow (1999)
Wonderful!
Sleepy Hollow was a fantastic film, a story that could only have been made truly enjoyable (for me at least) by Tim Burton. When I was little, the cartoon freaked me out...but I've never really been able to understand Ichabod in most interpretations. Either you pity or despise him, you think 'well it's a shame what happened...but he was stupid' or 'I'm glad he died...the money grubbing jerk!' In reality, this just made the character deeper, not to mention the fantastic costumes...gels...scenes. It has an artistic flare, obviously...being a Tim Burton film (as I've mentioned.) The characters are deeper and more understandable. This is one of the very few mysteries that took me until the end to figure out the killer. Even then I was still surprised.
Down (2001)
It's funnier if you've seen the lift
I had seen 'The Lift' when I was a little kid...it was one of the weirdest movies I'd ever watched...so I remembered it. We have the video, and I've seen it more than a few times. And then I find 'The Shaft'...deciding to watch it. What amazes me is that there are not only plenty of famous actors in it...but just how funny it is! And most of the things in it...I doubt I would have found as hilarious, if I hadn't seen the original. The scene transitions range from decent, to gruesomely morbid and hilarious. While I didn't like the opening scene...the rest of it is just great. It's such a shame it wasn't in theaters, which is understandable...it having come out only 2 years after the whole 9/11 thing.
Sour Grapes (1998)
Funny and Stressful
Frankly, I find this movie difficult to watch every time. So many things occur that just seem to spiral down into chaos causing chaos causing chaos. The main characters, at first...you take a side...then eventually you'll realize that neither are in the right. But one does something to the other, which is unspeakably terrible...and receives the same in turn. Eventually when it's all over, something ultimately terrible happens. Suspense is not only something that relates to a horror film, in my opinion...upon seeing this film. The director perfected it to an almost migraine inducing level. If you are patient, this movie is fantastic. If you're not, and you simply can't stand it...well perhaps this isn't for you.
The Order (2003)
A Bit of Advice
Take the movie in stride. The one thing about watching a film involving religious ideas, is that you shouldn't take it seriously. Then again, you should never take a fictional story without a message seriously. It's a horror film, and that's all. It's even a pretty good one, if you just sit down and watch. Don't obsess about little details, like the history of the catholic church, or how blasphemous character actions might be. Truth is, it's just a story. Once a person can understand and appreciate that, they might find it pretty scary. There are certainly some creepy aspects to it...and slightly depressing ones. Frankly, to be offended by THIS movie out of all of the modern tripe one could be far more so offended by...is ridiculous.
Esta Noite Encarnarei no Teu Cadáver (1967)
Disappointment
At best, this film was mediocre...at best. At times it seemed to pull you in, but then it would throw you right back out with ridiculous character dialog or simply...well, bad props. One big thing about this movie is that it's like a train wreck. You know what's going to happen, you wish it would hurry up...and you can't look away. I could have watched 'Return of The Living Dead' for the eighteenth time, but instead I decided to watch this craptastic film. I thought it would be funny, as it had so many aspects that possessed the ability...but it was neither over-the-top enough...nor was it realistic enough to make the story believable. To tell you the truth, you can tell right from the beginning with the intro credits that this movie is going to suck. But I recommend seeing it anyway, just to prove that there are worse things that plan 9.
Chances Are (1989)
This is a wonderful movie
I don't think I could have enjoyed it more, though certain things were disturbing. I'm not going to say what, if you haven't seen it...you'll have to find out for yourself. At any rate, what movie can lack with Robert Downey Jr.'s puppy-dog eyes? All-in-all, the plot was developed sufficiently. Nothing seemed too rushed, as movies like this tend to be. The characters were like-able, and there were plenty of hilarious scenes in it. The idea over-all is that the story is very well tied together, even if certain aspects may be unsatisfactory...by matter of opinion. But like I said before, it's hard not to love any movie with Robert Downey Jr.
The Wrong Guy (1997)
Two words. Funny movie
I have always been a huge fan of Dave Foley, he was my favorite guy in the 'Kids in the Hall' show. And unfortunately, I was not aware of this wonderful film until about a year ago when I went to blockbuster and found it in the bargain bin. The description didn't seem amazing, I thought it would be mediocre at best with a few amusing or dry witty jokes...boy was I wrong! The dialog is fantastic, the movie is through-and-through something to make you laugh uncontrollably. You might not want to be drinking anything when watching the film however, as you might end up choking or coughing it up all over yourself...that's just how hilarious 'The Wrong Guy' is!
