Good, not great
20 December 2015
Boy, was I excited for this one.

Nope, nevermind.

It's a remake from EP IV (the first one). It's like Abrams had a checklist of things to put in the movie to make it a safe bet.

Daisy does an awesome job of being Rey and I think that's what saves the movie from being just average. If Rey had been portrayed by a subpar actress, this would've been a flop. Not to mention Rey is basically a walking deus ex machina (which seems a deliberate choice to fill some agenda by Disney and the director).

There's many good moments, but there's something missing.

A good movie. Definitely worth watching, but it isn't the SW we've been waiting for. All it does is set up groundwork for the sequels.

If you remember watching A New Hope, you know that movie stands on its own. Maybe we shouldn't compare it to the Original trilogy, but that's impossible given the similarities.

Anyway, give it a try. Just don't expect it to be the next big thing.

Hard-humor but funny as hell!
15 September 2010
Dinner for Schmucks is probably one of the best comedy pieces that came out in this and last couple of years.

The reason why people insist on bringing down this movie, is just because they were probably expecting something else out of Steve Carrel and Paul Rudd.

Well, guess what, the movie is still funny. And aside from Kieran's part being played by Jemaine Clement (still very well performed, although, Russel Brand would be perfect for the part), every single actor in the movie delivered. Except for 2 or 3 scenes, the whole movie has lines that make you laugh.

In the theater I was in, everyone couldn't stop laughing. Steve Carrel is a comedy god and everything he says is just hilarious.

Don't bother with negative comments about it. It's an amazing piece of work and well worth every penny.

Star Crossed (2009)

Inesperadamente bom - unexpectedly good!

First thing I have to say about this film: it is Portuguese. And that, my friends, isn't the best of traits when it comes to cinema.

I saw all the other Portuguese "blockbusters" in the past....and I can sum them all up in a couple of words: sex, swearing and f*cking.

Since "call girl" to "corrupção", all the Portuguese movies rely heavily on "hot" chicks and lots of sex, many times including Nicolau Breyner - one of our worst actors and honestly not that good-looking.

So, if you want to check Portuguese cinema, please be aware.

With that said, I must say: Star Crossed is awesome. Not the best movie out there, for sure, but in comparison with the other Portuguese pieces, this one is a real work of art.

I mean, the acting is very credible, the characters are likable and identifiable (they're not surreal when you think of them), the pacing is good and the two football scenes are very well done.

The story itself is very self-explanatory -> it's a Romeo and Juliet remake, so you know exactly what's going to happen in every scene (but instead of two real families, there are two football clubs). This means you will be bored in the middle of the film? Hell no! Even with the story in your head, you'll find yourself very "attached" to the movie, mainly because of the acting. There are some really funny scenes and everyone interacts just fine, in harmony. Paul and his friends really do feel like friends, they joke around, make fun of each other, etc. Every scene will surprise, even if you know that they will kiss on the balcony, that that thing will happen to that guy and so on.

Teresa Tavares could do a little bit better, so as Kyle Redmond Jones...sometimes I felt that they were forcing it a little between them. I mean, I just couldn't feel the love all that well they're supposed to have (as Romeo and Juliet). But they are "saved" by some incredible acting by Diogo Morgado, Luke Mably, Neil Fluellen and António Fonseca. You just know that when they're on the screen, something good is going to happen. And it does. And guess what? It comes as a complete surprise. This movie will entertain the ass out of you. It's a good piece of cinema and I mean it.

The director really gave it all on this one. It's a great Romeo and Juliet remake and it was very well converted to our day and age. It's a must see for all movie lovers and, attending to all the crap that came out of our cinema, an obligation to every Portuguese. The real surprise is....the director is Mark Heller...not Portuguese. It makes you wonder: the only good film coming out of Portuguese cinema was made by a foreign director. Maybe this will teach us something.

Excelente filme! (Great movie)

Just would like everyone to know, my favourite movies are Memento, Godfather, Dark Knight, Shawshank Redemption, Prestige, Moulin Rouge, Star Wars, Fight Club, Seven, etc etc.

(this was just to prove my "valid" point of telling apart good films and crappy ones).

Now go out to see this incredible Portuguese movie!

Jumper (2008)

Actual is a very seeable filme
17 January 2009
I read some poor user reviews about this movie and I was kind of reluctant when I sat down in my living room to watch it.

There are a lot of good scenes - the fighting ones are amazing, I mean I went "WOW" when he grabbed the bus all the way to the desert!

Although I liked it (rated 7) I agree with some of the critics - Hayden Christensen does a poor job in the movie, there was a time I was actually loving the movie because of the other jumper, Griffin, played by Jamie Bell. Rachel Bilson does okay, as in it's not an epic part of her, but very believable. I think what no1 liked was the white hair in Samuel L. Jackson! WTF were they thinking?

Meh, it has some poor parts, but the concept and the freaking fight scenes makes it worth it. And the "jump" animations are bloody awesome as well.

It needs improvement, namely on the acting skills of Hayden Christensen and better story development. But hey, I'd watch it again and still like it....and I'm a guy with lots of seen movies in my head (favourite one: Memento).

If you go down to see this movie, remember this: it's not an epic blockbuster, it's pure entertainment and it delivers.
