Il mostro (1994)
The Monster
I was pleasantly surprised at what I watched here! I honestly thought it was going to be some cheesy NOT FUNNY 90's movie just by the PICTURE (I definitely pre judged) but I am glad I watched it. To make a reference, it was kind of like a way better Mr. Bean for me. I don't know exactly why I connected the two, maybe because they're both foreign? Either that or a Deuce Bigalow, another great one. Overall I really enjoyed this movie. It made me laugh and definitely gave me a good movie to recommend to friends. It is so much better to ACTUALLY WATCH IN ITALIAN just because the main character plays the role so well. That and because watching it in Italian (with English subtitles) everything seems way more animated and just overall better and funnier. The plot was also good it was a nice, funny storyline and definitely relatable for the average man, so I would think.
The Dinner (2017)
The Dinner
I was laughing so hard reading the other reviews of this movie because I literally couldn't agree more. I tried my hardest to like it and get into it just because I wanted to give it the benefit of the doubt that maybe it's just a slow movie that takes a while to get good but it never really did. I found it boring and kind of predictable, but mainly just lacking any real sense of I don't know what. Not exactly lacking plot, not necessarily lacking character development, I'm not sure what??? All I did know is that I would not ever watch it a second time to try to figure it out. I also would not recommend this movie, just because it sounded like it was going to be good but I just didn't like it honestly and could not seem to get into it no matter how hard I actually tried.
Sulla mia pelle (2018)
On My Skin
Normally I would say this is more of my thing, especially being on Netflix and having that documentary type of feel by being based on a true story, etc. I felt very sorry for Stefano and wanted to learn more about him and what happened after watching this film - we hear about police brutality and things of that nature all of the time, but of course I had never heard of Stefano Cucchi before. I don't really like any of the gory stuff, whether it's gory movies, gory clips, gory pictures, etc. It just never sits right with me. This film was no exception, but it was a different type of film than all the other Italian produced films that I've been watching, and it just goes to show that all people, no matter who, face the same challenges in life and everyone we go there will always be corrupt systems, corrupt people, and victims.
La prima cosa bella (2010)
The First Beautiful Thing
This was a beautiful emotional movie. I really liked the actors in this movie because it seemed like they had a good chemistry on and off screen - for some reason I just had that feeling about it. The movie was emotional to me obviously because of the storyline and death, or the idea of death and having to watch your family member(s) slowly slip away from you, whether death or just estranged. However, I would absolutely recommend this film because it is the type of film that is relatable to anyone who doesn't have a perfect family nor a perfect life... in that case, EVERYONE. If a film HAS to be sad, I also like a film that can make me laugh, too, and this one did just that. It was a good balance to where the film isn't depressing, no fun in that. 10/10 would recommend it to a friend.
Arianna (2015)
Arianna
For more than just a few reasons, I did not enjoy this film. At all. Not at all. Unfortunately I have to agree with other reviews I have seen on here when I say that the film was not only weird and uncomfortable for me to watch, but I was honestly disgusted and confused as to why it had to show as much as it did. I understand the film makers were trying to be as honest and candid as possible, but for me, it was too much. I did not enjoy this film, skipped through all the weird disgusting parts, etc. It's not just because I felt second-hand embarrassment; like I said, I was just disgusted and confused. It took away from the plot this film COULD'VE had in my opinion. Overall I just did not enjoy this film, nor would I recommend, if I'm being completely honest.
Viaggio sola (2013)
A Five Star Life
After initially reading through the "summary" under the movie before watching, I had anticipated something different... perhaps more like a Sex and the City kind of vibe with luxury and maybe even romance. However, after seeing how lonely Irene is and how she actually has minimal (meaningful) relationships, it puts what sounds like a fun, luxurious job into perspective. I would think that she gets to travel all over and have fun, while the reality showed that she is rarely ever home and with company she enjoys. I would think that she has great times using the hotels' amenities and relaxing, while she is actually having to do so much and pay such close attention to so many things most people would find it meticulous and possibly even unbearable. I enjoyed this film because of the perspective that it showed and the message of what is actually meaningful and valuable in our lives.
La grande bellezza (2013)
The Great Beauty
More than anything, I liked the storyline and message in this film, it's not everyday that we see films like this with this type of story. I really appreciated the actor and even his age, the fact that he was older and yet still wanting to make a change made the film inspiring to me. This was because no matter how old you are, we should always try and better ourselves and seek what actually REALLY TRULY makes us happy. Who is once just a vain party lover becomes a role model, arguably. The movie is inspiring because it makes you want to live for yourself and stay true to yourself and your happiness. Although all highs can't stay highs, the movie also allows you to go through heartbreak, which I normally don't like just because I get very into characters, but this film was overall a pretty good one.
Ladri di biciclette (1948)
Bicycle Thieves
I enjoyed this film because the story line was simple and relatable - although we are not in post-World War II Italy, nor have I ever been, I could empathize with Antonio for being desperate for employment in such a time of need. We can feel good for Antonio only for a moment, until his bicycle is gone, and then when him and his son have to find it I felt nothing but pity. It's a real telling story for the simple fact that we know what it's like for a good parent to want to do good in their kids' eyes, especially a father because he's a man, and many men have a strong sense of pride. It's a strongly sentimental movie and it brings us the intense feelings of bad luck, failure and desperation. We can't help but wonder if Antonio will come out of this depression that Italy, and many other parts of the world, faced during this time.
