Gang Tapes (2001)
Not that awful
I wouldnt describe this film as awful. The fact that all the film is shot through a camcorder makes one feel he is part of the furniture. The dialogues are somewhat tedious, but thats reality i guess. Possibility more could have been done when it comes to credibility. However, something fresh all the same!

Blood Work (2002)
decent plot, poor acting
Monday evening is a sacred night for movies. Couple of friends, each get a turn to choose a dvd. I was never a fan of clint eastwood. I see him as a two-dimensional actor, fit only for westerns. And this film confirms it. The plot was decent and kept most of us going till the end (although i guessed who the baddy was from the beginning). The acting was awful and tedious. Even in scenes where most human beings would be sh***ing their pants, our main actor (who had just received a heart transplant two months before) was strolling around as if in a park feeding pigeons. I think i caught him yawning too! Well, most of us where asleep by the end of the film.
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)
Feast for the Eyes
I read Tolkien's trilogy 2 years ago and, like millions of others, was engulfed in a new world - Middle Earth. So there was much expectation surrounding the film release. And i must say that i am impressed at what has been achieved. Critics have it that the film is heavily layered with special effects and that many of the characters are unexplored. In other words, more food for the eye than for the heart. However this is totally acceptable and expected. To incorporate most of the books' fantasies and characters is already an arduous task. Some aspects had to be cut off otherwise Jackson would have had to make 20 episodes to keep faithful to the book. If one wants to feel the whole range of emotions, then the only true bible is the written version. The film is mainly a feast for the eyes, and a damn good one too.
I Am Sam (2001)
Wonderfully touching
Oh my God! This film was incredibly touching. I think i lost a litre of cry water during the whole film. Penn was incredible. I think he really would have deserved an oscar for this. Michelle Pfiffer was great as usual. But the young girl, Dakota Fanning, was the one who stole my attention most of all. So young and yet such a performance, and with such ease it seems! This film is one to watch!
Men in Black II (2002)
Disgusting!
Another cash cow sequel! An incredibly poor script with very low standards of acting. Although not my genre, i kind of liked the first Men in Black. But this is incredibly stupid. Thanks God (really thanks to IMDB for providing ratings and comments) i didnt go to watch this at the cinema. Got it on DVD and i still feel i was seriously ripped off!
Deliberate Intent (2000)
Not film material
The concept was good and initially this seemed to fit the typical court case film. But it was cut too short, and the family's decision at the end of the film left me with a very sour taste in my mouth. Didn't they get enough money! Wasn't this about more than money? So when u reach the end you'll notice that the story does not deserve to be on film because it is a pre-mature ejaculation!
Everyone Says I Love You (1996)
Mysteries of Love
You have got to be a Woody Allen fan to watch his films. He has got a unique way of making you smile or even laugh with his depressing, self-destructive humor. You either like him or you don't. I've always though his work is wonderful because they are built on dialogue rather than picture. Its all about love and its complexities and its ironies and its ups and its downs. Woody Allen is a master in making fun of love's by-products - frustration, jealousy, adultery, regret, self-pity, back-stabbing, opportunism - which he can incorporate in his character like no one can do, always in good taste. This film has great actors and a warm story about love and different facets which we all pass through some time or another - this all done in a comedial style ala Woody Allen. Great actors, great dialogue and great script. Mind you, not a film which will make you die of laugher, but rather smile because you know that its so true.
Showtime (2002)
Same order from the menu
Dont expect too much! I watched this film the night before and i cannot say i was disappointed because i knew this was not going to be Oscar performance. However, how can you miss a film with the likes of DeNiro and Murphy, as well as Russo. Could have been great and hilarious. Instead the film was standard low key comedy, where you get a few laughs and a couple of smiles trapped in a seen-a-million-times story line. Nothing extraordinary, just a balanced performance. Its like the best football team wasting just enough energy to scrape through.
Mulholland Dr. (2001)
Intriguing Stuff
This is a film i really was dying to see, and no matter how bad the reviews i got from friends about it, i still was drawn to it. Well, i must say that after seeing it I was left glued to my chair trying to figure it out. And this is exactly why the film is so good. This is not your average disjointed psychological thriller which all makes sense at the end. This is much like a detective jigsaw puzzle. You've got clues which you've got to consider carefully at the beginning, at each corner of the film, and then at the end. Even at this point most (including me) wouldn't have got too far. You will either see this film a couple more times, or you will shelve it and try to forget about it. I've read many interpretations and many of them make sense. But even if you dont give the film meaning, its suspense and mystery will still engulf your senses. You dont really know what is waiting for you round the corner. Sometimes is nothing, just suspense building up that doesnt explode. But nevertheless its purpose is to keep the audience entertained, and give the film a dreamlike feeling. If you are into psychological thrillers, and if you are into David Lynch's style, then this is a film not to miss. This is no pre-packed and ready to eat meal. You've got the ingredients and you've got the figure out what to do with them. You've got to use your mind, and think. And re-think. And re-think again! If you're ready for this, watch the movie and you will possibly be hooked to it!
Varian's War (2001)
Smoking, Drinking and Rescuing People
This is a film about an American man with a noble mission - to rescue Jews living in France in the 2nd World War by taking them to America. But not any Jew! Must be an accomplished artist! He books the best hotel room in the city of Marseille, smokes and drinks half of his money and at the end attempts to rescue four couples who could barely walk a mile (Obviously they smoked and drank like hell themselves). Moreover he passed on sex a number of times, slowly making him a very angry person!
Minority Report (2002)
Sci-fi ala Matrix
In 1999 Matrix just blew our mind. We had to wait three years, but here it is - another great sci-fi movie. And what makes it so good? Its a mix of mind breaking special effects encapsulating a good story and a twisting plot. As icing on the cake, we've got a marvelous cast, with Tom Cruise re-affirming himself in these types of roles, after his great interpretation in Vanilla Sky. I must say Vanilla Sky would have had a chance of being a really good sci-fi movie if only it wasnt stretched too much at the end. Same for AI. Well, i would say this film is still one step down from Matrix but thumbs up just the same. Definitely one to watch at the cinema!
Ocean's Eleven (2001)
Over-rated
Before watching this film, I heard great reviews of it. I must say this was slightly over-rated. Don't misunderstand me. Its a good action film, with a fabulous cast. I was somehow bored with the first half of the film. However, when the action kicks in the latter film, it is a fun film to watch.
Not one I will remember of years to come, but worth the visit to the cinema.
A Beautiful Mind (2001)
Russell Crowe Deserved The Oscar
Crowe has blessed us with top notch performances in LA Confidential, Insider and Gladiator. But I think he exceled in Beautiful Mind. I am disappointed he did not win the oscar. Denzel Washington is one of the finest actors around, but I think Russell deserved to win for such an incredible performance in a very difficult role.
Galaxy Quest (1999)
Hilarious
Rarely am i impressed by full blown comedy movies. When this one came out on screen I didnt go to watch it at the cinema because comedy which try to make fun of other films usually turn out to be dumb and irritating. But i must say that after watching this a few times on satellite I find myself stragely attracted to this movie. Its hilarious! The situation just bring with it bags of laughter on the way!
Light It Up (1999)
Not bad at all
I must say that although the film it no oscar winning material, it is not bad at all. The acting is very good, the story line is simple but powerful at the same time. It is firmly much better then many of the blockbuster films which hit our screens every month and leave us with a sour taste in our mouth.
Vanilla Sky (2001)
Each to his own interpretation
Its impossible to comment if this is a good movie or not, because it falls under the category of experimentation and phycology. Many have tried to compare this film to 'fight club', but really such comparisons are futile. 'Fight club' is a phycological theme which appeals to the mass. Its action packed and fast. On the other hand this film is an experiment in interpretation. I must say i enjoyed the experience but not all the other people who saw it with me were impressed.
I must however say that, although intelligent, the ending just was not in syncrony with the rest of the film - just like the A.I. ending it might have been omitted or diffused somehow!
Charlie's Angels (2000)
Formula for film money making
Films like this are guaranteed money makers - the formula is easy:
1. Get a budget of $100m or over 2. Recruit a couple of famous actors/actresses 3. Come up with a simple story (even stupid such that it wont challenge the mind) 4. Come up with lots of action and fight scenes. Most of these you can copy from previous films and simple improve a bit 5. Hype the film up with a large marketing campaign 6. Launch the film on a strategic date 7. Make money and relax
IN MY OPINION THERE SHOULD BE REFUNDS FOR FILMS SO BAD!
Cast Away (2000)
Lovely adventure
I must say I did not watch the film at the cinema because friends had told me it was not as good as it seemed. However, I have had the chance to watch it on video, and I must say that I really enjoyed it.
One must admit, its a slow moving film. However, it is rich with emotion. A common person, with no survival skills, who discovers things we take for granted along this adventure - fire, food, water, shelter, and even companionship.
This film is not highly recommended for the adrenaline hungry, although it must say that the plane accident at the beginning is realistically frightening. Its a film which will appeal for the patient viewer who likes a story.
You will inevitably continue asking yourself: what would i do next if i were him?
The Wedding Planner (2001)
Awful
My god. This is suppose to be one of those simple but 'feel good' films. Instead it is ridiculous and old. I still cannot understand how in todays day and age, with all the brilliant young writers emerging, someone can write this script and be accepted.
First of all, i am a fan of both Lopez and McConaughey. But they seem so incompatible and out of place in this movie. No chemistry what so ever.
The characters of the father and Massimo are DOWN RIGHT STUPID. No other way to describe them. Even i could have moulded them better into the film and given them more punch.
The plot seems to be written in an hour by a five year old.
There are so much spoilers in this film i cannot be bothered mentioning them.
Mrs. Lopez. PLEASE, TAKE CARE WHEN U CHOOSE YOUR FILMS. THE ONES WHERE YOU ARE MADE TO LOOK STUPID ARE DEFINETELY UNRECOMMENDED!
4/10 Just cos your ass is in it and its always a pleasure to watch!

Moulin Rouge! (2001)
Spetacular
This is a real gem. I never knew these two could sing so well! A rare work of art.
This is a definite for those who love musicals. And for those that dont fancy them too much, this would very probably appeal since the songs are modern (e.g. Madonna's Like a Virgin), the film is fast paced, and the scenarios are breath-taking.
In my opinion, the best 2001 film by far.
A Night at the Roxbury (1998)
Stupid but funny
This is one of those movies that has a good feel to it. In its stupidity and poor story line, it is quite hilarious.
Although this film will never become a classic of cinematography, and although it will not be remembered as one of the funniest movies to hit the screen, i enjoyed it and recommend it to those that enjoy simple comedy films such as Dumb and Dumber.
I cannot see why it has scored so lowly -4.8. Maybe a 6 is more like it.
A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001)
No, no, no
Why Spielberg would spoil such a great film by giving it such a poor ending totally baffles me. The film should have stopped 15 minutes earlier without the introduction of the E.T.s.
On compensation, the first half of the film is brilliant - typical Kubrick. If only he could have shot the whole film, this would have really been a great one!!!
Joan of Arc (1999)
Intelligent Interpretation
An intelligent interpretation of the life of Joan of Arc. If you are more of a 'direct' history story then you would probably not like the film. Gods apparitions are vague but realistic, battles are chaotic, the hero is confused. At the end this is more of a philosophical interpretation than an adventure. I loved it but i would recommend it to a mature audience.
