Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024)
Perfectly fine addition to Ghostbusters
This movie is fine. It's acted well. The script is good except for a few parts. The CGI looks good. The bad guy is a cool design. The comedy is good. Some of the comedy was ill timed if you ask me in my opinion. They did nods to the OG but didn't go overboard with them.
Dan Aykroyd was used great I thought. Ernie Hudson was used well. Bill Murray is the weakest of the OG guys but is fine. Kumail Nanjiani was funny as was Patton Oswald. They both could have been used more in my opinion.
With all that being said I was watching this and thinking why don't I like this more? Then it hit me. It's just not the original Ghostbusters. This movie would have had to be near perfect for me to rate it higher. It has such a high bar to clear and in the moments when they play music from the original all I do is think about the original movie and how great it is and how okay this one is.
It's worth a watch though and is the best since Ghostbusters 2.
Road House (2024)
Serviceable movie but a little long and not something you'll be coming back to.
I'll start this off by saying I don't remember much of the OG movie. So with that said it was a perfectly fine movie for what it was. Fight scenes were fine but looked a little off. Idk if some where CGI'ed in some parts but the opening Post Malone fight looks like a video game.
Jake Gyllenhaal gives a good performance in the road and is obviously head and shoulders above everyone else. The woman who owns the Road House is fine and the girl at the book store is also fine.
The thugs all look the part and are mostly fine. Moe (I believe) is a funny addition to the regular thugs.
Now to the elephant in the room. Conor McGregor. He isn't very good and for me actively makes the movie worse. He walks like there's a stick up his ass and is constantly smiling for some reason. His fight scenes are predictably good but otherwise he's not good. Even how they bring him in is odd? He's the heavy for the main villains dad. Idk why he doesn't just work for the main villain.
On the bright side the humor is actually surprisingly funny. A lot of funny one liners.
Overall it's a good movie to watch with the boys or by yourself on a lazy weekend day.
Gran Turismo (2023)
Surprisingly good and enjoyable video game movie
I put this on not expecting much. Video game movies, while on a nice run now, are usually iffy and this isn't a video game I'd base a movie on.
This does help from being based on a true story so there is an outline for the movie. The plot is good, tense, and has moments of triumph that don't go into the corny.
I really thought the mixing of the real life racing and game racing was done beautifully. Gives it a really cool feel at times.
The cast is excellent as well and there aren't any performances that stand out as bad.
The racing parts of the movie look great and are very believable.
Overall a surprisingly good movie that you won't be mad you spent a few hours watching.
No One Will Save You (2023)
A good throwback alien invasion movie.
First off there is no dialogue. So if that doesn't sound like it's for you, skip this one.
If it is your kind of thing you're in for a treat. The movie follows a woman who is isolated from her town and you don't find out until the end but you get a good idea of what happened.
She then gets attacked by extraterrestrials and has to fight them off to survive the night.
The atmosphere is errie and really makes the movie.
The aliens are visually appealing and there are some moments were the CGI isn't great but overall they look pretty good. There are also a few different alien designs which adds to the visuals.
The UFOs look good as well. Overall everything is used just enough.
This is a really tense throw back alien invasion movie and if you enjoy break in/sci-fi/invasion movies this will be a pleasant surprise for you.
Meg 2: The Trench (2023)
This is for fans of 80s action films.
This movie is silly mindless fun but it is 80s silly mindless fun. The action isn't just over the top. It's over over the top. Every moment that can be dramatic is 100% dramatic and a near death experience.
Every explosion almost gets someone. Every close call with a Meg is the closest of close calls. It is so ridiculous but it's glorious.
Jason Statham is single handily keeping the 80s action movie alive. He's embraced his role as the star of these utterly ridiculous action movies and he's great in them.
As far as the movie goes it is what it is. Writing is fine. Acting is okay. CGI is laughable at times.
I see people complaining not enough Meg but I think it's enough. The octopus is a nice touch. Overall just enough creature mayhem for me.
I give this an 8/10 as an 80s action movie not as a great piece of cinema.
The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023)
Good movie that could have been great with a few tweaks.
I love anything Dracula and this is a very good addition to the Dracula list of movies.
The acting is good from top to bottom, even the child gives a good convincing performance.
The music is perfect imo. It's chilling when it needs to be and sets the mood perfectly. The end credits music is chef's kiss.
The plot is repetitive but it doesn't get old. The runtime is just about right. Maybe a little shaved off, but not much, would be perfect.
There are also some brutal twists and turns that I didn't see coming. A few scenes that were truly brutal.
The sets are also superb. They again set the mood and creepiness perfectly. The ship is almost another character in the movie.
The CGI is good and doesn't take away from anything. The Dracula looks great and I love that they went with an old school/monster design.
I feel like a few tweaks would make this movie great. Basically just shortening the time frame or giving different motivations to the crew would elevate this.
Overall a worthy addition to Dracula lore and if you're a fan of Dracula it's a definite watch.
The Pope's Exorcist (2023)
I was ready to give this a 6 until the final act.
For 3/4 of this movie it plays out like a typical exorcist movie and is largely forgettable. To be honest I have had my fill of exorcism movies. They bring little surprise for the most part. This follows that formula until the final act.
It goes totally off the rails, in a good way, and brings some action that is fun to watch. The ending sets up for sequels and I wouldn't mind seeing this become a little franchise that leans into the silliness of the last action of this movie.
The acting is fine with Russell Crowe being the obvious standout. The other priest and family are all fine as well.
I'd give this a recommendation solely to see Crowe ride around on a scooter.
Jungle Cruise (2021)
The second best Indiana Jones movie that isn't Indiana Jones.
This is a very good adventure movie with a story that isn't groundbreaking but the actors play their parts well.
This role is not typical Rock fare and while he doesn't shine or anything he does his part well and the action from him is good.
Emily Blunt is convincing as an adventurer and never looks out of place during the action. Same with Jack Whitehall. He plays the brother well and when he gets in on the action it's convincing for his character.
Jesse Plemons plays a little hammy as the evil German, not a Nazi, and surprisingly brings some good comic relief. The conquistadors are also cool visually and are good as the henchmen. There backstory adds just enough to the story as well.
The twist for the Rocks character was one I didn't see coming and was surprised by.
Scenery is beautiful as well. The characters aren't super fleshed out and play one note but they don't need to be more than they are.
Overall this is the second best Indiana Jones movie that isn't Indiana Jones only behind the Brendan Fraser led The Mummy.
I Had a Bloody Good Time at House Harker (2016)
I really enjoyed this film. Great and I mean GREAT Indie Comedy Horror
This film hit all the right notes. It was funny. The gore was great. The vampire looked AMAZING. The cast was perfect. Overall one of the best horror comedies I have seen.
