Tripping with Nils Frahm (2020)
One of the most authentic, amazing and brilliant concerts I've experienced
Nils Frahm is legitimately a genius. There is no other way to describe the impression you are left with after this incredible, intimate and rousing performance.
The concert is performed, fittingly, with Frahm centered in the audience on a small stage surrounded by a wall of musical instruments. And he then proceeds to build a haunting and evocative mood, spending the next hour and a half taking us on a journey through a range of emotions from melancholy, to exhilaration over pensiveness and solemnity. It is rare to experience a single cohesive performance that so brilliantly evokes every emotion along the journey, without feeling forced or incoherent.
Every piece is amazingly performed, with a Nils Frahm that is clearly completely and wholly immersed in his performance and the music. It is truly a pleasure to watch not just his mastery of the keyboard and synthesizers, but also his plain love and enjoyment of the music.
I've listened to this concert half a dozen times and I don't think I'll ever stop enjoying the performance.
Lastly, while the music is available on streaming services, I found the recording from Funkhaus Berlin WAY more engaging and moving. I would STRONGLY recommend watching the live performance. It is a league apart from the recording I heard in Spotify.
The Ritual Killer (2023)
Terrible
I don't usually write reviews, but this one was so bad, it promoted me to show my disgust.
I can live with movies that don't execute on all points, they can still have something that makes them worth watching.
This one had no redeeming features.
The story was boring. A guy murders people to get "powers"?
The direction was messy and confusing.
The acting was poor, and even Morgan Freeman, of whom I am a fan, was almost visibly frustrated by his superficial and naïve dialogue.
The editing was atrocious with odd angles and cuts.
The cinematography was uninspired and with no finesse.
There is no reason to watch this unless you are drunk and want to make fun of a movie.
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia: Mac Finds His Pride (2018)
One of the most beautiful season endings I've seen
Always Sunny excels at satirizing a wide range of societal issues, along with brilliantly portrayed psychopathic characters that provide a solid dose of humor. They create absurd situations, showcase some of the absolute worst qualities in man, and make us laugh because there's a little of it them in all of us, at times. A part that we don't really want to face. They're racist, ignorant, opinionated, violent, offensive, sexist and almost any other -ist you care to mention. They are bad people, through and through, absent a single redeeming feature.
Then, out of the blue they do THIS episode, and bring you to actual tears with how amazing, touching and sensitive it is. To think that IASIP is the show that shows coming out in a most beautiful and respectful way is just mind boggling. But I'm glad they did. It wouldn't have had the same impact coming from most other shows.
McElhenney has my deepest respect for the process he went through to make sure this episode had the visual impact it deserves. He showed an amazing commitment to make the episode finale a piece of art.
