The Princess (2022)
For what it is
A suspension of disbelief, girl power, medieval times, fun run, guilty pleasure! Not sure what lesser reviews were thinking, but for the whole intent of the film the scripting, filming, and costumery were great. The fight scene choreography and filming/editing treatment were fantastic! Nothing seemed lacking in the production to create an entertaining action-packed, princess save-the-day film. Admittedly, it's not going to be seen as awards material, but was that what anyone expected? It is very well done for what it was intended to be, and for that alone, deserves high marks. I thoroughly enjoyed the action ride!
Murder Is Easy (2023)
Thoroughly lacking
Three stars only because of the filming (for the most part), design aesthetics, costumes, and locations. Could do without the artsy dream state sequences and blood the color of the ladies' lipstick!
Otherwise, story jumbled and yawn-worthy and nothing likeable to care about any of the players. Despite some delightful actors, none really hit the mark for the characters they play; some appearing very mismatched.
There is nothing compelling about this adaptation, whatsoever. Having never read the book, this adaptation causes trepidation to ever bother to do so as the portrayal is so weak and gives no reason to invest one's time to bother. Had to read plot summary of the book online to try to follow and make sense of the progression of the show.
Hoping for better adaptations in the future. And, a call back to just telling strong stories as they were written without inserting any social or political agendas or creating circumstances a show should be classified as 'Fantasy'. Find or write original works to accomplish this.
CSI: Vegas (2021)
3 stars because it is ok if you plan to fall asleep
Season 2. Wow. Is there any way the acting can be worse? Filming quality and script are surprisingly low level. Even the appearance (and poorly scripted part) of Marg Helgenberger (whose lines are not delivered as well as in the original to hide limited acting abilities) cannot help lend any life to this dud of a legacy to CSI. It is even sad they use the same theme song as the original.
The scenes and images to represent "science" are now just obscure shots of things that make no sense or impart anything scientific in context. Did I mention the acting? Uff. How is it possible to contract a whole cast with such sub par acting skills? Was the budget that low? It is like watching scenes from other shows when they do spoofs of CSI type shows.
Listening to the dialogue between characters can be excruciating at times. Cold reads from people off the street would probably be better (and more entertaining)!
I expected more for something they tethered to the original. Sad to say, my expectations were dashed.
Beast (2022)
Wow. I love watching Idris Elba act, but...
Why do they continue to make movies where young adults and teenagers make the absolute worst and, although advised or otherwise informed, most stupid decisions ever and suffer no consequences to life or limb to themselves or others they care about?! This is yet another round of ridiculous survival in spite of every action contrary to actually surviving in a situation. Not to mention simple observations as how no one thinks to roll up a window in an urgent situation towards the beginning of the film, yet how later in the film no one (even those inside the vehicle!) seems to realize this open spot. That is until a lion does, defying any realistic probability to actually fit through the window, and entirely enters the interior of the vehicle, while the kids exit out the back leaving the vehicle altogether.
The chemistry between the characters portrayed by the actors of father and children does not compel one to care too much about who survives to the end. There is more chemistry between the main character and his friend.
The movie may have played out better removing the kids entirely from the storyline.
Ghost Light (2018)
If you love Shakespeare's Macbeth and have a sense of humor
This is such a fun romp! Good casting, plot consistent and tight, great music scoring and selections, great use of Macbeth play and a curse upon it. This film is so witty and entertaining! Not sure what all the haters and low scores are about. It was not supposed to be some academy award winner, but the tight plot, all the story telling, and how things progress relative to Shakespeare's Macbeth is engaging. It is humorous, easy and subtle frivolity and ghostly entertainment. Some may find it slow, but they probably also don't care much for performances of the actual Shakespeare play. And for staunch Shakespeare fans, broadening the idea to appeal to an audience outside some strict formality is likely akin to blasphemy. Like Shakespeare himself wouldn't have enjoyed this as a playful diversion!
