Ae Watan Mere Watan (2024)
Failed attempt at making a patriotic movie
The film starts with anticipation and promises, and halfway through it looks like the plot is building to something good in the middle somewhere it loses its touch and becomes a repeated freedom struggle movie with few good actors and other bad. After all, it is Sara Ali Khan's movie, it revolves around her character Usha, there are parts when her acting looks real but mostly every other co-actor overshadows her work. The movie gets more predictable over time, so much could have been done with this type of plot but it has been wasted with poor writing. The climax is another expected bore and after completing the movie there is nothing much of a takeaway other than knowing these freedom fighters, who deserved a better movie than this.
Shool (1999)
A touching drama, excellent acting and direction
Watching this gem now, it was fully packed with emotions of the time, it depicts parts of history and corrupt society. I now see it was bold attempt by Ram Gopal Verma at that time to make such a movie, it did showed cruel reality and tried to uprise the watchers emotion to the point that whatever happened in the climax was what the watcher wants. Be ready to see the dark part of life in such places and what a honest cop stands for. It might get difficult to watch as many things shown in the movie are unsetteling but wait for the climax and you will see the motive of this movie and what is shool and aggression. Amazing acting by Manoj Bajpayee in his young angry cop role, it was quite different act from a bollywood police role. Also the villain and every other co actors did thenjob perfectly.
Unbelievable (2019)
Reviewing after wasted expectations from this elongated miniseries
Title: A Rollercoaster of Promise and Disappointment: A Review of "Unbelievable"
"Unbelievable" opens with a promising start that ignites viewers' curiosity and a sense of intrigue. The initial episodes of the series are laced with a thrilling aura that immediately grabs your attention. The storytelling and the investigation unfold in a way that keeps your interest piqued, making you eager to delve deeper into the narrative.
As the series progresses, however, it experiences a noticeable shift in momentum. The initial thrill that was meticulously built up gradually dissipates, leaving viewers with a sense of unfulfilled potential. It's as though the writers embarked on a journey to craft a cunning and malevolent serial killer but lost their way along the path. The excitement that was initially palpable in exploring the clues and the cat-and-mouse game between the detective and the antagonist wanes.
After reaching the sixth episode, "Unbelievable" takes a surprising turn. The narrative takes an unexpected detour into a realm of emotions and drama, deviating from the heart-pounding suspense that defined its earlier episodes. The absence of further twists related to the killer and the abrupt transition to a plotline where the detective negotiates kidnapping charges for a hard drive password leaves the audience hanging. It's a shift that feels sudden and somewhat unsatisfying, given the initial promise of a suspenseful thriller.
The movie's decision to pivot towards a more emotional and dramatic focus is not inherently problematic, but the execution leaves much to be desired. It feels like a departure from the gripping thriller that was originally envisioned, resulting in a jarring change of pace. While it's important to empathize with the victims and their experiences, the portrayal of these emotional elements may not seamlessly integrate with the overarching storyline.
Furthermore, as the plot progresses, it becomes increasingly predictable. This predictability undermines the tension that the series initially managed to establish. The lack of unforeseen twists and turns can leave viewers wanting more from the narrative.
One aspect that stands out as particularly intriguing is the selection of victims targeted by the antagonist. The choices seem unrealistic and somewhat disconnected from the expectations one might have of a straight male criminal. But as the story is based on true events I believe that it was smart of the real serial killer to chose such victims thinking they would never complain.
Ram Setu (2022)
Not a bad Movie at All
I wonder about all the negative reviews which I find are not appropriate. It is rare Bollywood does something new and it is done in it, I haven't seen much movies with Archeological perspective. It was a successful attempt at creating a sci-fi which really keep you attached till I will say interval, after that it kinda gets very Bollywoodish but still has those elements of adventure and exploration.
I would only critique the unnecessary parts which were not needed but are used to extend the movie in Bollywoodish way. The background music score is not impressive but the cinematic experience and Akkis acting is very convincing. Lets support this movie, so Bollywood makes better sci-fi and not get dishearten by this religious people who can't see or appreciate anything related to religion.
Mili (2022)
Survival Thriller with feel good Family - Bollywood drama
Bollywood do have few survival thrillers, if anyone watched Rajkumar Rao's Trapped, then you will feel this one a mere dissatisfaction. But its not just survival, though the main theme is that but they have added a lots of Bollywood elements to it and emotions. Don't expect a thriller because the story is simple but the acting and drama is really fun to watch. Every actor is fun to watch and how story builds up is interesting but lacks depth in the survival theme. The movie would have been a whole different movie if it focused on the survival angle but it covers also the unnecessary parts which makes the film boring. The start was slow and didn't added much to the story, so were some middle parts, felt parts like when Jackie Shroff appears and illogical delays made by police overexaggerated. In India, I don't think police would take such extensive actions if someone is missing for just 4-5 hours. Jhanvi acted well, I came to see her and she didn't disappointed, but her character could have been smarter then what was portrayed.
Crime Stories: India Detectives (2021)
A really good documentary which shows the few unsettling true cases handled by Bengaluru police.
Seeing a crime documentary is different than seeing shows like crime patrol or CID, it shows how really Indian police works. It has 4 episodes with 4 cases and covers story from the police perspectives. The show goes like this, Police officials receives call for the crime committed, they then show the incident place with a real dead body, this could be hard to watch. The investigation than takes place, suspects are called and interrogated, we can see how cyber cell and other team members work to find real culprit.
Its a real gem and you would not regret spending time over it. This the second Indian Police documentary I have seen after 'The Indian Butcher', which was also compelling. Netflix did a great job by bringing such content, they should make more such documentaries.
It is available in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Hindi, English and Kannada, but as this set in Bengaluru I suppose the original language is Kannada and I suggest to watch it in Kannada only.
Indian Predator: The Butcher of Delhi (2022)
Something different that might not attract everyone
This the first time I have seen Indian serial case documented, Netflix and crew did good job researching the case and interviewing the real people involved in the case. The first episode might give you vibes of a mysterious case to be solved (similar to zodiac the serial killer sends notes to police to get publicity in media) and finding the murderer , but other two episodes explains the aftermath. The narration is not bad it is unique, but its not entirely about finding the serial killer, which is where peoples expectations are drowned. You should look at this as a documentary and not a movie. I do not believe that the 2nd and 3rd episodes are dragged, they still has content that entertains and shows much of reality.
I liked it and I would love watching more documentaries like this.
The White Tiger (2021)
Awesome acting and something like Bollywood's but not Bollywood's.
The lead role is not a known actor but he does the role flawlessly, the supporting actors were also on A level. This movie is basically shows Indian Servant Master, Rich poor and such aspects with dark humor here and there.
Overall a nice watching experience and something out of the box for the people looking for such.
Hotaru no haka (1988)
Best movie I ever watched
I call it the best because this was a movie that took my emotions to next level. It starts abnormally with the lead telling about the day he died. But than the real tragedies starts to begin, the two lead characters Setsuko and Seita, elder brother and her younger sister, after losing there everything in War, starts to survive. Their survival does not give much of the hopes, as one can expect that results are not going to be good at the end. But still the way both characters live, I lived with them , there was a little hope for them surviving, reuniting with their father, that rose hopes in me. As the movies goes on, it took me into deep emotions where what happened to them was hardest thing to see. Thats what makes this movie great, the way it portrays hope and love.
Horns (2013)
Unique Idea but plot very predictable.
Horns is a set of stories including love, crime, humor and horror. The main character has turned into devil with horns, he is suspected murderer. The plot builds nice as movie progresses but there is nothing new everything can be expected. But the movie as a whole is engaging and acting of Robert Pattinson is very admirable. A should watch movie if you want to see something different as those iconic horns.
