Deadloch (2023)
From a 3 to a 9
If I had only watched the first 3 episodes I would've given this 3 at most and all because Eddie is too much. Too much stereotype, caricature, annoying, trying too hard. I only stuck with it because other reviews had said similar. Glad I did it was worth the initial pain.
However the other characters were well developed and compelling. The plot was great with plenty of twists keeping us guessing. The female victim story was turned on its head without removing the incompetence of power.
From the end of ep 3 onwards they have reduced Eddie's awfulness and made her a part of the team who all contribute to a great show.
Walker: Common Ground (2022)
Daytime soap level
Just ridiculous plot lines at the moment. No one would have a race and how predictable there would be sabotage.
The lamp? Come on! It wasn't found before now and is suddenly evidence?
Please drop the mystery adoption it's so trite.
The whole family feud is so daytime soap level it's boring.
Jupiter's Legacy (2021)
Assumption of season 2 ruins season 1
The Utopian was too black and white. No one continues with an ethos without examining and questioning themselves or whether things have changed unless they are ultimately a villain. There is no suggestion of him seeing any possibility of the code being amended.
All parents had issues greater than the usual parent child dynamic. Just too much and too many to be believable.
There was too much time developing the origin story in parallel with the contemporary plot. It was clear the assumption was there would be more time to build on both. In truth it didn't give enough time to develop either plot line so the end of episode 8 wasn't a cliffhanger. Had potential but too many holes for early seasons
You can't bank on renewals because someone else has created a long running series you've been involved with. Developing a story from new is very different and it shows you don't know how to engage the audience.
In general production performances and costumes were great except you don't have to denote someone is old by giving the a grey beard.
Happiest Season (2020)
Wanted to love it
But I couldn't. Mackenzie Davies was stiff and uncomfortable even before she was with her family when it would've been understandable. The family dynamics and plot lines were so cliched they weren't even worthy of a Hallmark movie. I think it showed in the actors performances. Kristen Stewart gave a great portrayal of someone being pushed back in the closet to protect her love and getting no love back for her sacrifice. Dan Levy is always a delight and his moment of explaining how everyone's coming out story is their own journey was heartfelt. Really wanted to like it more and see more of the friends than the tired family drama.
