Just Before Dawn (1981)
excellent movie to watch in the dark
Very suspenseful, creepy, disturbing. GET THIS MOVIE! This movie was a doubly very nice surprise for me. This was in a multipack I ordered on the internet. Maybe another movie shares this title as an alternate or otherwise but the description on my DVD case describes a totally different type of movie- made long before 1981. So when this movie began I had to put on pause, read the back of the DVD case again, and sure enough, they'd (fortunately) packaged a similar titled but wrong movie in the case. Excellent independent horror - suspense movie. This is a terrific example that good lower budget indies can be great & not cheap and sucky. I'm glad the company that put this out put the wrong disc in. This should definitely be marketed better, and video stores should stock this. I'd never even heard of this movie before. That's how under the radar it is cuz I thought I was a good amateur authority on horror. But it's clear to me that the writers/producers of "Wrong Turn" were influenced by this movie.
Sabretooth (2002)
One of the worst I've seen
I only watched this cuz' Josh Holloway ("Sawyer")from "Lost" is in it. Other posters' negative comments are right on & more entertaining than the movie was. The part about tranqualizing the tiger SO INACCURATE!!!The writer should've done research on this at the very least. It'd take an average tiger or black bear 15 min. to go down from a trank gun. This thing's size, if you were to dose safely, might take up to half hr. for it to go down all the way. This movie makes it immediate, and not only that, it wears off in 2 min. ??!?!?!? Plus, the fur just made me feel dirty. It looked as fakey, tangled, fuzzy & worn as a hard-as-sandbag moth-eaten, mildew infested stuffed animal "prize" you win at a carnival busting an impotent balloon w/ a dull dart.
Saw (2004)
GREAT STORY -not viscerally gross as expected
I deliberately block out extra info about movies I want to see, so I went into this afraid I might be so disturbed afterwards & have little appetite like after "Chainsaw Massacre" & "Hannibal". To anyone sensitive who's turned off to eating while watching certain movies, this movie's "food friendly" (or am I getting jaded?) "Saw" should actually be classified as a Thriller/Mystery vehicle, w/ horrific elements riding along. And the writer and director are so young! and this is their first movie?! I'M VERY IMPRESSED. AND MARKET THAT EVIL CLOWN DUDE to sell!! I'm sure it'd be a hit even to eccentrics who haven't seen the movie & impulse shoppers, then you got the people who've seen the movie.
The Last Broadcast (1998)
Interesting & Good Movie
I went into watching this not knowing anything about it (I never read all the back of a video store movie pkg.-they usually give away too much). It was really interesting to me. I thought it really was a re-capped documentary about the killings. There were a few nuances in the acting here & there I was suspicious of-the Jim Suerd char. at times seemed a little too hokey, and Charlotte, the digital media retrieval specialist smirked a little too much. But overall it was very entertaining. If you ever liked "Unsolved Mysteries" this movie ran like one of their missing persons/crime sequences. It wasn't until "Michele" got snuffed that I realized it was phony. I SO hated "Blair Witch Project" on every level. I even almost didn't finish watching "Blair" cuz I was also so bored. This movie had me hooked & shouldn't even be compared to Blair Witch in terms of quality.
Dead End (2003)
Too Scary to watch before you walk anywhere @ night.
***Spoilers**** I saw this at a friend's house just 2 nights ago. We'd seen "Intermission" first (w/ C.Meaney,C.Murphy,C.Farrel- which by the way was EXCELLENT! I wanted to watch the horror pic Dead End last. Bad idea. Once it was over I was too freaked to walk the 3 blocks back home. 3 LONG DARK blocks home. I asked to borrow his Akita to walk me home -I'd keep her overnight. She gets along w/ my animals...so fine. My friend ended up driving me home after the TV ad came on for the Boogeyman. No way could I walk home even with a tough looking dog. Some issues w/ Dead End though. If you discovered the body of a traveling companion on a road apparently hacked up by an axe or chainsaw- no way would you stand around on the road IN THE DARK, w/ forests on either side of you, God knows who or what's there in the trees-jabbering & arguing w/ the others you're with. The tension was too prolonged. They way they kept stopping the car for what seemed obvious was traps or asinine reasons, but they'd stay there, arguing, when all I'd wanna do is get IN the car, turn around, and get the F out of there. It's a real testament to the Mom's char. acting. She is SO convincingly and annoyingly insane- I couldn't wait til she got killed- (no offense ma'am). For someone who has to frequently drive at night-this movie scared the tar outta me!
Good Times (1974)
a sweet show. Post-er "Renee" evidently never watched this.
This is a sweet, wholesome show that anyone sentimental for good old fashioned loving family values should welcome. And of the comment poster "Renee", who obviously hasn't really watched this show & wouldn't surprise me if "her" family is KKK & just wants to malign black people & "Good Times"- the character James, i.e. the dad never beat the crap out of the kids, and the mom never ran around like a crazy person breaking dishes. The depicted family was loving & had Christian faith. So what if the script is kinda corny, it's cute & has likable characters. You wanna talk campy "Renee" what about the Brady Bunch. This show just makes you feel good.
Club Dread (2004)
funny."unemployed critic" doesn't know crap
I totally disagree w/ "the unemployed critic". This movie IS smartly funny. Sneakily sophisticated subtle humor. Kudos to the dudes who wrote this. I wasn't expecting altogether much when we rented this but was pleasantly surprised. Sorry to disappoint readers out there who are like-minded w/ the aforementioned critic, who don't even comprehend-so are unable to appreciate-any kind of humor other than the crude, in your face, obvious quaff that a slow wit understands. The type that probably couldn't sit through the Shining or 12 Monkeys or the Sixth Sense because "it's too slooow!!" and "there ain't no music, man!" and "I just don't get it, dude!". I enjoyed this so much I'm going to buy the DVD to add to my collection. If Broken Lizard could somehow go back in time it'd be great if they could include David Cross to add his Scary Movie 2 weirdness to it as another character. I could sense his vibe there, though he had no part in the movie.
Maude (1972)
This should be put out on DVD.
ATTN: Industry people, put this out on DVD. This was one of my favorite sitcoms and is much better than a lot of older shows now available on DVD. BRING BACK MAUDE PLEASE!! I believe this show surprisingly wouldn't appear dated, but still relevant. And Bea Arthur was funny as heck. She and Carol Burnett were the funniest ladies of this TV era. Maude and even "Mary Hartman" should be issued on DVD. Definitely. Bea Arthur as Maude was the most endearingly smart, sarcastic character. Also her boldness offended my Dad, which made me love her even more. Along w/ All in the Family, "Maude" was ahead of its time re: cultural and societal referencing on early 70's television. I don't care what it'd cost, I'd love to own Maude on DVD. Hopefully the powers that be in Hollyweird will someday make it happen.
Dinner Rush (2000)
I LOVED this movie!!
Excellent filmmaking and acting meshed so fine. Great character study of people too. Danny Aiello is wonderful as usual. Eduardo Ballerini ("Udo"), slammed such as impression on me! And Summer Phoenix is AMAZING as the patient but put upon waitress Marti. And I loved/hated the art critic jerk. Sandra Bernhardt as usual, a fun to watch bi*ch. I applauded John Corbett's character. As for the chefs' domain, the pace and stress in the kitchen's so palpable. (As someone who once got canned after 2 days in a nursing home kitchen of all places, I so appreciate the stress they endure!) Screw any mobster's presence, if I lived in NY, I'd wanna go down right now to a Tribeca restaurant like this after seeing Dinner Rush!
