Ricky Stanicky (2024)
Simply not funny
Since when is lying about suffering from ass cancer funny? Toilet humour can be funny when done correctly, too many penis and stupid sex jokes, not sure what happened here. John Cena is annoying but the only actor actually doing anything in this. Zac Efron's face is distracting. Secondary actors were boring and forgettable... no chemistry at all. Good premise but poor execution. Perhaps my expectations of wanting to watch a comedy and laugh were much too high. Disappointing and a waste of the 45 minutes I lasted. I normally see most movies through to the end... not this one. This poor excuse for a movie may have been made for a much younger demographic than my age bracket. Comedy no longer exists sadly.
Mayans M.C. (2018)
The Outlaw Biker World Through a New Lens
This series is a good one as a stand-alone, meaning those of us who loved SOA need to put that world aside and view this with fresh eyes. This is a crime drama that integrates real world political happenings, which is something SOA did not do. The time period we are currently in differs from 2008 when SOA debuted; there is a lot happening that is getting our attention & Mayans focuses part of its lens on what is impacting a segment of people in the world. For those saying it is "soap opera-esque" - it is a drama series & so yes, storylines will be just that - dramatic! There are enough SOA references or "Easter Eggs" to get SOA Nation excited, however, this is a new & different world of MC & should be viewed that way. Excellent opening theme song for Season 1 & some really good music throughout - arguably, at times, better than what we heard in SOA. The Mayans are not the Sons & they are not supposed to be; they are an MC unto itself with its own story to tell.
Animal Kingdom (2016)
Absolutely NO resemblance to SOA, Point Break OR any combo of the two
The high ratings for this show are very suspect. The 4 that I gave this poor excuse for a series is very generous. This drama bares absolutely NO resemblance to the characters or storytelling of Sons of Anarchy or the film Point Break. These people are nowhere near as endearing & engaging as the Sons & their Crow-eaters; they are also nowhere as cool & mysterious as the guys in Point Break. Frankly, it's an insult to both pieces to make any comparison to this drivel, which are clearly only superficial (i.e., overbearing mother a la Gemma, young surfer dudes a la Point Break). Each character looks the same, especially the younger women, & there is nothing unique to distinguish anyone either. These are unlikeable characters that I simply do not care about; I care less about what will happen to them because there is nothing redeeming here. Fails to conjure the emotional impact of SOA. B grade TV. Rewatch SOA & Point Break instead or venture into other crime dramas that have more going for them such as The Wire, The Shield, Breaking Bad, Sopranos.
Sons of Anarchy (2008)
Come Join the 1%
Suspend your disbelief & enjoy the aesthetics & chemistry between a very well put together ensemble cast. This is a fictional dramatization of the 1% & it's great fun to watch if you keep the aforementioned in mind. You may find yourself becoming emotionally attached to certain characters along the way. Episodes stay with you & keep you wanting to know more of what happens next. Stick with it beyond Season 1 & you may find yourself totally sucked into this criminal underworld. 9/10 as there are some slight storytelling flaws along the way & nothing is perfect but this one comes pretty damn close.
Sunset Strip (2000)
Fun way to spend a sunny afternoon
Fun 70s rock n' roll tale, especially for those who enjoy music & have a good grasp of pop culture. Watched it to see Tommy Flanagan, I like his brand of sex appeal in each of his unique roles. Just wish there was more of him in this one. Worth checking out.
Vikings (2013)
Weakens over time
The first three seasons were amazing & pulled you right in with investment in dynamic characters. The story dies with its most engaging protagonist unfortunately. Overly-stylized at times in more recent seasons. Some latter season episodes drag & dialogue is either silly or repetitive or uses too much modern terminology to be believable. To the point in this most current season where I no longer care who rules Kattegat, who's carrying who's child, or what happens to Ragnar's remaining sons. The Rus characters are unlikable & annoying with poor accents & mediocre acting. Continuing to watch until the end out of obligation at this point.
The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
Maximum Family Drama...Minimum Scares
Not a terrible series, however, I wasn't frightened once. Surprised to see so many 10/10 reviews & comments that this series was so scary. This is more of a family melodrama with gothic/horror/creepy aspects than a horror series. Enjoyed the actors, especially the child actors, they were great. I liked the aesthetic, especially during scenes that take place in Hill House. Toward the last few episodes, the audience has to piece much together & it may get confusing. I was expecting something more horror-oriented, as in the Amityville films which I love, but most of the time it was more about the idea that people must have children to find meaning & the family woes that go with that rather than a horror story. Too many emotionally-charged & awkward to watch monologues as many other reviewers have pointed out. If you want a good scare, watch the 1970s version of The Hills Have Eyes, it's the most frightening thing I've ever seen thus far, it stays with you for a while, unlike this series.
Wentworth (2013)
Excellent & tough to top!
One of the best series going! More intense & engaging than OITNB. Tough to top, I can't find a series out there this bingeworthy! Pamela Rabe is now one of my favourite actors ever-she's ridiculously brilliant & talented! Check it out & stick with it after the first 2-3 episodes, you will be hooked!
Less Than Zero (1987)
Great 80s watch!
Good story, made even better by Robert Downey, Jr & I'm my view, James Spader as the villain, as he does it so convincingly. I have a thing for young Spader so that made this movie all the more enjoyable for me. Soundtrack & aesthetic are so wonderfully done. Style & substance throughout. One of my favourite 80s films!
Tuff Turf (1985)
Fun 80s teen movie... Young Spader is a dream!
If you enjoy 80s movies & are a James Spader fan, you will like this one. My original intention in watching this movie was to see Robert Downey Jr. in his early days. While he's fun & lovable, by the end, I fell completely in love with young James Spader! He's divine & now have an obsession! I've always enjoyed anything I've seen Spader in, from Pretty in Pink to the sole but memorable Seinfeld episode. He has the ability to be charismatic, mysterious yet funny; he's very talented & is fun to watch. However, this movie had me mesmerized with his charm & gorgeous looks, not to mention his voice & manner of speaking.. I can't get the guy out of my head! I will be seeking out more James Spader films in the near future. The story is good & the acting overall is well done. A love story similar to West Side Story in some small aspects. I especially loved the visuals, music & how quintessentially 80s it all is. I highly recommend if you're into all of these aspects. Available on some streaming services such as YouTube & Tubi. A hidden gem!
