Back to Trek
28 June 2022
This is probably the best start to a trek series since Voyager. Im 8 episodes in, still holding my breath, but so far it's been mostly a great experience.

There have been a few weak episodes, but this is definitely a return to sci fi for Trek. No more one sided straw man political posturing. Most episodes make you think, ask questions about your morality, and want to be a better person.

The cast is good. Uhura is a bit of a Mary Sue but I think they can round her out. As was common in the previous serious Trek shows, the "woke" is really just presented as future life and isn't shoved down your throat. Ansel does an excellent job as the captain.

Ive watched an unreasonable amount of Star Trek and so far, I'm impressed... so far.

the slowest of burns
13 May 2022
Good show but you have to watch the entire season. The buildup peaks in the last 15 minutes of the season. Tons of great characters and moments. The potential is there for a great second season.

If it you like slow moving shows that force you to think, this is a great choice. If you want something more episodic or fast paced, you should look elsewhere.

Are we watching the same show?
18 February 2022
Im confused. I feel like the other reviewers are watching a very different show.

The main character is a poor actor, hes comically larger, knows everything, and regularly finds ways to flex ("the beach is that way"). The supporting cast is awkward, dialogue is forced at best, everyone seems to be a weird archetype, nothing feels organic, the mayor is some weird orville reddenbacher knockoff with a diamond tipped cane...

This movie feels like if a 13 year old wrote a mash up of jason bourne and roadhouse.

Slow but good
16 January 2022
This show has a similar tempo as a horror movie, which can throw people off. The first few episodes are a very slow burn. However, after that, it picks up and takes a few interesting turns. I would recommend this show to any horror or suspense fans. Theres plenty of well crafted tension and the characters are fairly well written. Also I would say this is more weird fiction/supernatural than horror.

Be patient, but it will pay off.

All style no substance
16 November 2021
The most beautiful show I've seen and the world building is great.

However, the writing is very cliche and predictable. The characters aren't likeable. The interactions are so painfully predictable I found myself regularly laughing/sighing/rolling my eyes. Tons of plot holes. The villains are mustache twirlingly evil with little believable incentive. The protagonists are boring or un relatable. The romance is absolutely lazy with no chemistry.

Definitely worth a watch but it's ultimately a hollow experience.

Long time Dune fan

I've watch the movies, the miniseries (all of the them), read the entire series, and I've read a lot of the extended books.

The biggest weakness of this movie was probably the reason it will succeed. They cut out a lot of the depth from the book, abridged the entire first two thirds of the book, and cut most of the mystery and world building.

That being said, they improved the pacing and made it a lot more accessible to people who don't like that kind of "game of thrones" large scale story building.

It was a good movie, better than I expected. The performance were great except for Liet Kynes. Casting was pretty good but it pains me to say that Oscar Isaac, while good, did not have the air of dignity that I wanted from a Duke.

The environments are stunning. The changes to the story are understandable. Nothing felt disrespectful. Jamis was played to perfection. Liet Kynes was gender swapped but it's of no importance to the story. The effects were good. The Voice was handled well.

Good job! If only they would have had a little more faith in the viewer to enjoy a deeper experience. We still have the books and miniseries though.

Showed promise, ended after the first season
26 October 2021
What starts as a promising drama about zombie survival quickly evolves into 90210 for people who haven't come to terms with liking hammy drama. This is worse writing than vampire diaries.

Enjoy the show but it doesn't get any better after the first season.

Boring and unconvincing
25 October 2021
Unfortunately the main actor either acted amazing for a horrible character or was just stiff in general. Guy pierce is too good to play backseat to this other actor. Stephen Lang should have played a larger role. Keith David was also under utilized. The non supernatural events were unconvincing and the supernatural ones were corny.

Everything just fell flat. Shame. I love Guy, Stephen, and Keith.

Self indulgent love story
25 October 2021
Very little horror, mostly just poorly written love. Inclusion is important but it doesn't count for much if you're not willing to do a good with the chemistry. Please stop shoehorning in love stories where the characters have no chemistry. It's lazy. The entire premise could have been much more interesting without dividing focus. I think I've seen more plausible romance in MMA matches.

Forgettable

I literally don't remember anything from this movie. More formulaic marvel media. Not. Horrible, just not memorable. I would recommend watching this only if you were a huge marvel fan. Other viewers can skip this one.

Mixed feelings
23 October 2021
I'm conflicted on this one. The drama is sometimes too manufactured. The action tends to be hammy. The characters are over the top. At the same time, it feels like it works.

If you want a bingeable but relatively straight forward action experience, this is it.

Cheesy and derivative
16 October 2021
The concept is corny and poorly executed.

The script is bad, the characters are forgettable, the crimes aren't particularly interesting...

I wanted to like this but it was sloppy. If you are really wanting a Sherlock knockoff with CSI mixed in, go for it, but don't expect to be blown away.

Great show but not perfect
14 September 2021
The mandalorian is a fun ride but is a little sleepy and predictable at times. By far the best Star Wars ever made, but that doesn't mean much. It avoids the extremely hammy writing of the originals, the poorly thought out sequels, and offensively lame Disney trilogy.

Unfortunately, most of the characters aren't very interesting and once you finish the episode, there's not always much to go back for. That being said, it's a blast to watch the first time around and some of the episodes stand head and shoulders over others. It has the same world building and locations that you expect from Star Wars.

A must see for most folks.

Predictable but good
6 September 2021
The story was predictable. It started off interesting and complex but in the end, it was a simple narrative. They could have made this a great dialogue about our culture but instead it became a lazy story about how rape is the only crime that the police may think you lie about.

It was a fun execution though. Worth a watch if you want a crime drama.

Fun, creepy, surreal
24 August 2021
Well done characters, creepy vibes, very surreal at times.

The acting was spot on for the main characters.

It's a lot like a Japanese horror mixed with cronenbergs style (albeit much more muted than his work). There's a big focus on making the viewer uncomfortable, feeling the characters emotions, heavy use of lighting, and highly unpleasant people leaving normal people as collateral damage.

Ending was horrible though. I think they were trying to subvert expectations or something. It's very abrupt and undermines the entire plot of the show.

Flat
20 August 2021
As a fan of coast to coast and someone who gets a gets a chuckle from the train wreck that is Alex Jones, I really wanted to like this show. Unfortunately the jokes come across as someone who hasn't really listened to either of its main sources of inspiration. This is more like someone who thinks they know what would have gone on in those radio shows and trying to make fun of them. I wouldn't say any of it is mean spirited, just not very clever.

It's basically mild cringe humor peppered with jokes that are predictable or not very clever. Maybe it will find it's feet, but I doubt it. I just didn't feel much chemistry in the show.

Bingeworthy slow burn
19 July 2021
Excellent show but it is on the slower side. It's not perfect, there are a lot of cliches and some poorly written characters but it's still a great watch. As the series progresses it gets more intricate and the characters improve.

They don't really delve into politics but they do clearly have a bias. It's not an issue in the show, you can just ignore it for the most part. Some of the story's are painfully cliche but the stories usually become so complex that they become more interesting.

Great show, bad ending
4 July 2021
Bosch is a wonderful show, but it starts to fall off when the original arc ends. The last season is rough. It has a lot of the elements that made Bosch such a great show, but the actual conflict is weak and full of PSA level head turning moments. The first 5 seasons are legendary though, so enjoy!

Imaginative but tired themes
14 May 2021
Wonderful ambience, does a great job of world building... unfortunately the themes of racism are really clunky and tired. There's nothing wrong with using racism as a strong theme, you just need to do it right.

Ending was changed
12 May 2021
Most people note that this feels like a pretty unique ride until the very end. Unfortunately, after doing some digging, the ending was changed late in filming because they felt the bad guy was too relatable. It's a shame, because this could have been a great movie that posed some interesting questions.

Must see for Adkins fans
11 April 2021
This is one of the best he's done. It's fun. There's loads of action. If you like Scott and are looking for a movie, this is a fine choice.

One thing I genuinely liked about this movie is it didn't try to be clever. It had a fairly humble story. They did a good job of entertaining us without trying to do anything fancy. Kinda vibes with 80 and 90s action in that sense.

<3 you Scott. Please make posters for your store. I'd love a huge boyka poster in my office.
