I'm with Lucy (2002)
8/10
Wonderfully Surprising
25 May 2003
I was expecting a run of the mill romantic comedy with flat characters and cliches..but I was pleasantly surprised to see the opposite. The story follows Lucy who goes on 5 dates over the course of the year after being dumped by her 'perfect' boyfriend. I was impressed by how the story was presented with all 5 dates simulataneously, and yet it was not confusing or choppy. Each scene transitioned well into the next and I felt it helped to make better judgements of each character with them all being fresh in your mind.

I was originally drawn to this film because of John Hannah and Anthony LaPaglia, and both indeed gave excellent performances, but I went away being struck by Henry Thomas. His portrayal of Barry was refreshingly sweet and witty. Monica Potter may resemble Julia Roberts in voice and appearance, but I find her to be much more interesting and entertaining to watch. (I recommend another of her films, The Very Thought of You)

Overall, the movie is funny and touching, and more original than most romantic comedies out there. Slightly predictable, but I was very happy with Lucy's decision in the end...I wanted that ending from the moment of the greetings of each of date.
