Las manos (2006)
Excellent in all ways.

Warning: Spoilers
I hope this man becomes a Saint. I would appreciate seeing a person heal like that; and the movie made me know of it and believe it is possible. I thought the speech given to the professor and the class was extraordinary. The Father's eyes are perfect. Seeing Italy was so nice.

I know the director didn't want me to see more than I saw, but I would have liked to see a panoramic view with daylight of where Father Mario lived.

I recognized Graciela instantly without reading her name after forty years when then I admired her as a young gorgeous actress. Certainly she has aged BEAUTIFULLY.

I loved the mother and the daughter.
20 May 2008
Warning: Spoilers
The movie broke my heart. I was so proud of the daughter when a tear emerged upon realizing and admiring her father's effort. The scene practising the use of the toilet with "clients" was fabulous.

The contrast between what I have and what they haven't is too extreme, YET they do have two supreme possessions -- faith and friendship.

The photography was impressive and the poverty was perfectly illustrated.

The movie offers no possible way to better the economic status of these dear people. Their lack of money is unrelenting.

They could do well in business as they have ideas, are resourceful and hard working. The world is the loser when the creativity of people goes untapped.

Away from Her (2006)
Bravo, Julie; Bravo, Olympia; Bravo the other women actresses.
1 November 2007
For years I have disliked Julie because the directors/cameramen abused so on prolonged close-ups as she is a beauty. BUT the first words I pronounced after seeing the film were I LOVE JULIE Christie...an impeccable performance. This time I was thankful there were many close-ups. Her beauty has not aged --- mouth, teeth, eyes, hair, her silhouette. Stunning. Thanks, Julie, and excuse me for my thoughts over the past years.

Olympia Dukakis was sensational also. The way she delivered her dialogue was very stimulating and fascinating. I think Grant will have an fulfilling relationship with her.

The nurse was very lovable to the spectator and to those who surrounded her. Her patience with the man throwing rings (?) was touching. You could never have guessed she was having a hard time.

The director of the center was perfect too.

AND the mix-up of the residents' wardrobes is absolutely true.

GAL (2006)
8/10
I'm sorry but I disagree on some points of the preceding comment.

Natalia's cafeteria scene was good but not extremely good, but her total performance was very good. I thought Molla was exceptional. Want him to receive the Spanish Oscar: Goya. The actresses have stunning beauty. Although I hate Hollywoodian close-ups, I loved to study the faces (men's and women's) here. They are not too short and not too long..."just right" as in Goldilocks. I admire the courage shown here by the newspapermen. I admired the courage shown in LOBO by the "topo" (mole) and others. I hope Melchor Mirailles is gathering material for a third film. (Read between the lines). I enjoyed the scenery taken from a far and especially noticed a waterfront scene with night lights to the left and a huge deposit/container to the right. I hope my note of 8 raises the note of the picture.

Here there are authentic funny situations coupled with drama.

This picture entertains. The director/writer wanted to show us Argentina. He decided to do it according to what he read once...that the Tango was the Joy to be/of being Sad. In Spanish: "La Alegría de Estar Triste." The personalities in his story seem real and are all lovable. The leading actress is lovely and voices the fresh original tangos like a feminine Gardel. I was able to congratulate these two in the 2006 Fifty-Fifth International Film Week in Valladolid, Spain. Three other actors and the author of the music were present too, but I didn't see them. Not often can one thank the creators in person and with hugs and handshakes for their fulfilling work. I could have mentioned many high points of the film to them, but only said that I wish it were possible to meet the characters of the film as they were all special and I listened with enthusiasm so as not to miss a single word of their dialogues. The photography and the casting is exceptional too. I appreciated the many surprising "turns" in the film. And I don't want to signal out any character as all contributed to this good film.

It captivates adults.
22 October 2006
In Valladolid, Spain, the serious movie-goers with extremely high standards when they evaluate movies applauded the film in the Fifty-First International Film Week (SEMINCI 2006). It is impossible to exceed in every way: The theme and story, the incredible cartoon drawings, the luscious colors and their combinations, the endearing characters, the creativity, the stunning difficulty of the sketching and the music and sounds of the languages involved all combine to offer us a memorable film. It may seem curious but the word that I voiced when it ended was DELICIOUS. There are so many impacting images that linger even now in my mind's eye.
