The Boys Next Door (1985)
Brutal and very realistic
The Boys Next Door is everything that 80's teen movies are NOT - and that is why I loved it. It's very realistic and brutally honest in its portrayal of teens who are outcast from their peers, and the effects it has on them. Not to mention both characters come from broken homes where it appears no one pays attention to them - another major problem of kids growing up in the US from the 70's to the present. Charlie Sheen does a great job, but Maxwell Caulfield steals the show.
This violence is extremely realistic and disturbing. But it has a point. The language is dead on too - this is the way kids talked in 1985.
This movie touches on a side of American society that most would choose to ignore, and that's why it is so powerful. Don't believe the negative reviews. This is an excellent movie.
Soul Plane (2004)
Hilarious
I can sum it up in one sentence: Soul Plane is hilarious. I laughed from beginning to end. Yes the movie is filled with several racial stereotypes, yes the humor is crude, yes it is kind of foolish...but Soul Plane has only one intention - To make the viewer laugh. And it definitely succeeds at that. I'm not even a fan of Tom Arnold, but even he is funny is this movie. Also, the interactions between Snoop Dogg and his African co-pilot are some of the best scenes in the movie. I fell off the couch laughing a few times.
I read a lot of the other reviews on here, and honestly people get way too worked up about racial humor. I find it ridiculous that even when black people make fun of themselves...nobody can handle it. Get a grip on your life people. If you saw the title "Soul Plane", headlined by Snoop and Tom Arnold, and were expecting an academy award winner...well, you're not the sharpest knife in the drawer!
Superbad (2007)
Not Good
I don't understand why this movie has been rated so highly. Lets get one thing straight - It is poor.
On the positive side, there is some funny dialogue during the first 20 minutes and the last 20 minutes. And the three main kids do a great job and are very believable as awkward high school students. However, the entire middle section of the movie is absolutely horrendous. This is where Superbad goes...uhhh...super-bad. The two policeman characters are over the top and non-believable. Their jokes are lame and forced. If they had only appeared in the liquor store scene and the party scene at the end, it might have been alright. But forcing them down the audiences throats for over an hour was a huge mistake and ultimately ruins the movie. Also, the scene where Seth and Evan get trapped at the adults house party is just out of place. The fight, cocaine use, and general awkwardness in that scene don't make sense and most importantly are not funny.
Overall, Superbad could have been much better. The three main characters are legitimately funny kids and the movie has an old but workable format. Unfortunately, several poorly written sub-plots and side characters ruin this film. You should check it out, but don't be surprised if you're disappointed in the overall product.
Let's Go to Prison (2006)
Horrible!
The trailer for this movie contains the only funny parts, and they aren't that funny. Chi McBride is the only actor who stands out and appears to have some comedic talent. His material is pretty awful, but he does the best he can with it.
Overall though, this is one of the worst comedies I have seen in a very long time - it was almost un-watchable. The only thing I ask of a dumb comedy is that it provides laughs. Lets Go To Prison completely fails at that. The script is terrible. I can't understand how a studio previewed this garbage and decided to release it in the theater.
Do yourself a favor and stay away from this one. It's an hour and a half you will never get back.
