Lessons in Chemistry (2023)
You stole my heart!
My best friend for many years was Mr. Larsson and now a Brie has stolen my heart.
Outstanding TV series, and not the slightest detail to complain about. Even if that rowing machine wasn't invented yet.
Haven't read the book, sadly, hope I will before I pass away!
There is seldom such a serious TV series with so much heart, and so seamless, everything is in the right place and looks very authentic, and the actors are stunning as well!
Bravo, bravo, bravo!
A lovely series, great investment by Apple TV+!
The word out there is grim, and it was grim then, and looks like it will continue to be so!
Exit Through the Gift Shop (2010)
Amazing story about Mr. Braindead
Having had some contact with graffiti artists this film was a lovely history of Banksy and his French mate, Mr. Brainwash (who definitely has a lot of mental problems, thus a very fitting nom de guerre).
A well-composed film about this nutter that had people around the world buying his 'art'?!
A fun film, an interesting film, made with a lot of heart.
Mr. Brainwash (aka Thierry Guetta) can't really help that he is a maniac, probably fitting better in an asylum than out on the streets, but he is kind of normal, occasionally. Totally obsessed with street art and documenting everything on video, after having been a successful businessman. Sadly Banksy sends him to the US, and what follows is great comedy, and ends with him turning into an internationally famous artist, with a very fat bank account!
Far better than any film I've seen for a while, and I see a lot!
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023)
It could have been so much better!
Got a real surprise when I saw the movie earlier today, that Mr. Ford could perform so well in an action, considering he's ten years older than me, and I'm past 70!
If one cut off 90% of the prelude, with a compute-animated Harrison Ford this movie could have been one of the really good ones, as cutting the first is half an hour (probably more, but I almost fell asleep during that part).
While the bit with the real Ford and excellent supporting actors was a delight, in most ways, the first prologue just showed that the teams involved were fairly good at it, like any old TV series from Disney. But who cares?!
The latter part was like a good ol' Indian Jones flick, maybe with a bit of Bond thrown in for good measure. And some romance in the end, to boot!
Million Dollar Pigeons (2022)
Pigeons, pigeons, pigeons!
Like many good stories does this fantastic documentary tell an amazing yarn, but this time based on a true story.
But this is about pigeon racing and how it became a multi-million dollar industry, and how the biggest race collapsed and the founder's charming widow disappeared with all the millions.
I have no insight in pigeon racing, more than a visit to a pigeon racing club as a school kid,
But it is an expertly told yarn, and it takes us from Irish amateurs, via American and South-African pro breeders, to the big event in South Africa, where things develop into a sad farce, where everyone seems to loose all their money invested, and the lady mentioned above, disappears, with all the money. Just like that, after having been involved in building the gigantic race together with her husband, that passed away some years back.
Smells like a Ponsi Scheme from here to Kindom Come, but was it?!
The director doesn't tell, but in the end we learn that a single pigeon has been sold on an auction for over $2,000,000!
And similar races are now held in Thailand!
The Accident (2019)
When things go wrong.
A difficult subject, about a dying village's last hope a new factory, which collapses and kills a lot of the village youngsters. And we are told about some of the factors that led to the catastrophe.
Very well told, very realistic, using excellent actors, good special effects, but very few surprises along the way, thus a bit depressing from start to finish, so not one bit of fun.
