After We Fell (2021)
It just gets worse and worse...
I loved its 1st film, After (2019), to the extent I even went to find its novels and finished reading all four of them. Then I was disappointed with the 2nd film, After We Collided (2020), although it was still acceptable.
Now, the 3rd film, it's such a total disappointment that it completely serves no justice to the original story in the novels. I also find there is lack of chemistry between the actors/actresses, probably due to the 90% switch out from the original ones. In addition to that, I noticed that Josephine Langford (Tessa) has evolved tremendously in terms of acting, while there's completely no improvement in Hero Fiennes-Tiffin (Hardin) at all. Hardin is supposed to be a dark, mysterious guy with anger management issues. But in this film, all I see is just a childish, spoil brat, who gets angry about every little thing.
Story development is also lacking. In the novel, there is a lot of love-hate tension, unspoken misunderstandings between Tessa and Hardin, which is supposedly what makes the story interesting, but in the film it wasn't given a chance to portray that. They did not allow tensions between them to develop, and they also did not allow romantic moments to develop. Everything tends to happen suddenly out of no where, eg. They suddenly argue, and they suddenly have sex etc., hence making this film look like some cheap erotic film. I feel sorry for Anna Todd.
The Witcher (2019)
Love the show but I hate the jumping of era without any indication
Honestly, I love this series but I hate it when the story jumps back & forth between timelines without any indication at all. HOW ARE WE SUPPOSED TO KNOW WHICH IS HISTORY AND WHICH IS CURRENT?!? It's so confusing... I had to read up about the story in Wikipedia just to understand what the hell is going on. I would have given a 9/10 if I could just relax and watch the whole series with understanding. Minus 1/10 because I personally don't like the fake voice Henry Cavill made in the show.
The Suicide Squad (2021)
It is worth the wait afterall!
After multiple delays in the release of this film, I guess good things are worth the wait!
This version is definitely a lot better than its predecessor, although there are some parts that are a little lame and silly, and their costumes are unbearably ugly and un-stylish, but they have a lot more good stuff to convince me to overlook the bad ones, mainly from Margot Robbie and Idris Elba.
Harley Quinn is as silly as ever, but when she fights, she's convincingly tough. This film also showcases the funny side of Idris Elba! Definitely recommended!
F9 (2021)
One of the best movie I've watched in 2021
Honestly, the franchise will never be the same without Paul Walker. But in 2021 alone, this is by far the best movie I've seen. I have been let down by too many highly anticipated movies this year, that's why I have to give F9 a 10/10. Have to admit though, some scenes were a little strange, awkward and redundant, but at least there isn't anything that seems to be an annoying factor. Plus, story wise, I like the idea of the huge magnet and the idea of bringing back Han & Mia. Their car racing stunts are still as exciting as usual. Love it!
Fear Street: 1666 (2021)
Brilliant Finale!
I really enjoyed the trilogy. Finally the truth is out about the witch, no twisted surprise here but story is decently good. The 2nd half of it was like watching a horror version of "Home Alone". Honestly, I don't get the zero or 1 star ratings. I believe everyone has their own preference but it doesn't make any sense for movies like this to be rated zero or 1, furthermore packaged with hateful comments.
Fear Street: 1978 (2021)
Oops! I was being judgy again, but this is really interesting
Despite giving an 8/10 for Part 1, I have to admit I was being judgy again when I saw the movie title "1978". Seeing that the movie is set on an earlier era, PLUS it's a sequel, so I presumed it was gonna be another boring sequel, which is a pretty common trait LOL. But no, it was still as interesting as Part 1. This time the story reveals the background of C. Berman, how she survived (nice twist on the real Berman who survived btw), hopefully Part 3 will really give us the full story on the witch.
Fear Street: 1994 (2021)
Judgmental at first, but turns out it's surprisingly good!
I was a little judgmental at first just by looking at their poster, thinking it's just another low budget boring lame horror movie. I was wrong, it's pretty good actually, with a combination of horror and mystery, and the fact that the cast was mostly less-known actors/actresses. It's not brilliantly good, but good enough just for entertainment. It actually kept me curious about the witch's history. Hopefully it'll be revealed in Part 2 or Part 3.
Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard (2021)
I wish I could mute Salma Hayek
I knew I shouldn't expect much when I saw the official movie title of the sequel, knowing Salma Hayek will be heavily involved. I just didn't expect it to be "SOOOOO annoying". Her delivery of lines sounds so fake, deliberate and annoying, her role seems so redundant in this sequel, I just wish they had taken another option in story-plot, one where she's not the main character and her voice wouldn't be heard THAT much. If there is ever a 3rd sequel where Salma Hayek is the main character again, I don't think I'd even TRY to watch it cos I don't think I can survive another 10 minutes of her fake swearing.
On the whole, this sequel simply did not serve justice to its first, even the jokes. But if Salma Hayek was out of the picture, I probably would have given a 6/10. A little disappointed here, but still love Samuel L. Jackson.
Oxygène (2021)
Surprisingly brilliant
The fact that the ENTIRE show is filmed inside a cryogenic chamber, and managed to keep me watching on, it's surprisingly brilliant. Haha!
In short, good movies doesn't always have to go with big budget. A good story with good actors/actresses, good editing & audio/sound effect is sufficient.
Gunpowder Milkshake (2021)
It's a funny action thriller
For the first 10 minutes or so, looking at the style of filming, and the coat and hat Karen Gillan was wearing, I thought it was some neo-noir crime film, with lots of narration, which I so hate. But once the real story began, it's actually interesting and funny at times. Don't be influenced by the negative reviews, but don't hold too high hopes too, just watch it over the weekend with popcorn in your hands, it'll be entertaining and worthwhile.
Mainstream (2020)
There's a message behind this movie, unfortunately it's too boring to watch
The message behind this movie is probably purposeful but the story is not good enough to make an impact. I gave it a shot only because the cast list enticed me. Sad to say it's boring.
Loki (2021)
I thought Falcon & the Winter Soldier was disappointing, but this is worse.
I loved the Marvel's movie all this time, but this.... sigh.
I thought The Falcon & the Winter Soldier was bad, at least the action scenes were good enough to entertain, but this is worse, a lot more disappointing. Can't deny it was funny in some parts, but I'd give Loki credits to that, even though it's still not enough. Story is boring. Very very boring. I got bored during the first two episodes but kept going because I was hoping to be surprised at the end, but sorry no, I'm not surprised and not impressed at all. If this is the standard they're gonna give, then I'm not even looking forward to Hawkeye.
Black Widow (2021)
It's a good closure for Natasha Romanoff
It was sad to see Natasha killed off in the Avengers Endgame, but I think this film is a good closure for her character in the MCU even though it's not the most brilliant one amongst it. I was hoping to see more of her history, like how she became a Black Widow, how she was trained, how they tried to break her, what sort of hardships she went through in the red room and then later went on to defect to S. H. I. E. L. D. etc. But this was more of filling the gap in between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. Story-wise, I'm not really very satisfied.
However, it's definitely a brilliant choice to cast Ever Anderson as the younger Natasha. Not only is she a great child actress, she even has some resemblance of Scarlett Johansson especially the shape of her mouth. Even before her character's name was mentioned in the film, one look at her, I knew she was playing Natasha Romanoff.
All good things have to end, so here's goodbye to Natasha Romanoff and hello to MCU 4. Iron Man will be missed too.
True Blood (2008)
Anna Paquin is NOT a good choice for lead actress
The fact that I've only watched this series after more than 10 years it was originally aired, I am really trying my best to be reasonable by not comparing it with newer shows and not judging it with the current era's standard.
Indeed, some of the actors/actress's performance made me cringe, even for Alexander Skarsgard, whose performance I've enjoyed watching in The Legend of Tarzan, made me cringe in this series too. So I will not comment on the actors/actresses, EXCEPT FOR ONE. Anna Paquin.
*DEEP BREATH & EXHALE*
It is soooooo exhausting watching her in the show. I've seen her performance in The Piano, and I initially thought she's pretty ok, for a kid that young, and the fact that it was her first film in 1993. But then several years later, with several films under her belt, when I watched her in X-Men in 2000, her acting is exactly the same, with that same facial expression, and that same tonality in her voice when delivering her lines, like she's always yelling at someone. That explains why I feel so exhausted watching her, cos imagine there are 7 seasons in True Blood, and I had to listen to her "yell" her lines and "shake her head" for 7 seasons. *EXHALE*
4 stars is for the fact that it's a very old series and the story plot is considered decent in their era.
Legacies (2018)
Great at the start, but slowly getting disappointed season after season
The Legacies started out great in Season 1. Enjoyed the usual witches, vampires & wolves stories, ok with some addition of phoenix, necromancer, fairies etc., nice seeing some old characters from the Vampire Diaries and The Originals returning occasionally, though it's a pity Caroline is always only mentioned, and not physically seen.
However, I got a little turned off and disappointed from Season 2 onwards when the editing of scenes got a little "jumpy" at times which got me confused and thought I was watching a wrong episode. I also didn't like S2E14 when it was filmed in "black & white" style, and S3E15 when they went "space" style, both of which can be evidently seen in Agents of S. H. I. E. L. D. too.
They are dangerously steering away from the original essence & nature of supernatural world/beings. If I wanted to watch spaceships and aliens, I'd be watching Star Wars or MARVEL's. They should've stayed true to their vampire & witchcraft stories, not blindly follow others just to keep up with times. Some things just don't fit.
If they don't steer back soon, I'm afraid the ratings are gonna continue to drop and eventually the series will be cancelled prematurely. I'm crossing my fingers on that.
A Discovery of Witches (2018)
Generally interesting but the downside is... It's very slow...
I haven't read the book, so I don't know the exact story of the novel. But as an audience to the series, I felt that there were definitely some important details being left out in some scenes which eventually left me baffled with lots of questions.
I don't know most of the casts here except for Teresa Palmer and Matthew Goode. I've watched enough of their films to know that they are great actor/actress (Especially Teresa Palmer in LIGHTS OUT).
However, their love chemistry in this series is lacking. I don't see myself rooting for them just like how I rooted for Edward & Bella in TWILIGHT, Lucifer & Chloe in LUCIFER, or even Elijah & Hayley in THE ORIGINALS.
Besides that, 3 creatures in their world, vampires, witches & daemons, they gave elaboration only to vampires & witches. So little is mentioned about daemons in Season 1, and absolutely nothing in Season 2, it's almost like they don't exist at all. And... while they made the vampires sound like they are so so powerful, after seeing how they fight, it was so disappointing, like child's play. At least the witches' magic powers are enchanting, making them look convincingly powerful. But the vampires.... nope. And as for the daemons, like I said, there was nothing about them, so I don't even know what role they play in the story.
Season 1 did start out pretty interesting, but eventually it became very very slow and draggy, in the end I found myself not giving 100% attention to the series while watching it. I'll probably still continue to follow their subsequent seasons, but just not as enthusiastic as "gluing my eyes to the TV" unless they decide to up their game in the future seasons.
Lucifer (2016)
Just love it!
Fox is dumb enough to cancel after 3 seasons. Fortunately Netflix saw the potential and picked it up where it left off and now we have another 3 more seasons!
It's pretty funny, to my surprise. When I first watched it, I thought it's going to be some dark fantasy, with lots of horror in it. But no, it's more like mystery in solving crimes with some comedic elements in it. Not forgetting the love story between Lucifer and Chloe of course!
I binge-watched from Season 1 - 5, and hate it when I have to wait so long until Season 6.
Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021)
Maybe a change in lead actor might work better
Story is pretty ok, and as usual it's always a pleasure to watch Samuel L. Jackson's performance.
However, I don't know if it's just me or what, I find Chris Rock's acting a little awkward and unconvincing at times. Maybe a change in actor for the role of Zeke might give the film a little more plus points.
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021)
Lack of interesting motives in the story
Definitely the least interesting among the Conjuring films.
They have no lack of good actors and actresses in this film. But even with great casts, if the story lacks quality, it still doesn't hold. The mere reason for all these horrors and curses because of one's growing obsession with occults is not antagonizing enough. If they were meant to just follow based on the true story itself, then they probably should've pick another story to tell instead.
Things Heard & Seen (2021)
Lots of unexplained details with an extremely ridiculous ending
If more details were explained or shown, perhaps it could be a pretty good horror movie. But still the ending is ridiculous. What a shame.
Shadow and Bone (2021)
I've not seen such great series after GOT
Shadow and Bone is awesome!! I got addicted to it right from the first episode and the first ever since Game of Thrones. Every single episode brings suspense, excitement and anticipation. I can't imagine if they don't get their seasons renewed, it will be really stupid of Netflix to do that.
Them (2021)
Good Story and Brilliant Cast but lacking in direction.
It has a great story plot here, with brilliant cast/performances, but a lack in REAL HORROR. It was mostly just cruel, gruesome, bloody scenes. They were very smart to leave the story of the town's history to the very last minute (in Ep 09), that's exactly what's kept me watching till the end, to want to know the "WHY?".
What I don't like is the direction of the series. There were a couple of jumping scenes, which is quite similar to "The Stand", but this series is not as bad as that. However, I definitely don't like the fact that the first 15mins of the last episode is a duplicate of Ep 08. They could just do a flashback, they don't have to repeat a whole good 15 mins.
I've seen better horror shows, but what I like about this series is the mystery behind, and the social awareness of racism.
Into the Dark: Pooka! (2018)
The Worst Episode in the Entire Series
Everything is terrible from the beginning till the end. Skip this episode and don't waste your time.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021)
Rated 6 for now. Will re-rate after the whole series is finished.
*Updated (Finished Series):
It's been pretty emotional for me during Ep 01 & 02, especially having someone else appointed as the new captain america (John Walker), that felt very betrayed. And the part where both Sam and Bucky received therapy in the cell and Bucky asked "Why did you give up the shield?", it was very sad... I detest the new captain america. Every time he made his appearances in the series, trust me, I am cursing and swearing inside, and I definitely enjoy watching the Dora Milaje kicking his ass in Ep 04.
Likes: I like the banters/jokes between Bucky & Sam, and the concept of Winter Soldier serum resurfacing. Fight scenes are getting better at every episodes too.
Dislikes:
- Didn't like the new captain america (John Walker) concept at first, mostly is because of my endearment towards Steve Rogers. But seems like he is necessary in the story to spike things up.
- The new persona of Zemo felt a little weird and out of place too. The impression I had of him in the Captain America: Winter Soldier film was a devastated family man who was blinded by revenge. All of a sudden he's a rich & well-connected man?
- Not fond of Erin Kellyman who portrayed Karli. Didn't make her character seem any dangerous at all. I think Wyatt Russell (John Walker) did a better job than her in making his character dangerous.
- An overly-deliberate attempt in emphasizing "black people" in the series. Yes, we are all trying to encourage racial harmony, even though some parts of the world are still facing serious racism issues, but having it mentioned not once, not twice, but several times at every single episode, I think enough is enough. If this is in the original story of the Marvel's comic book, then fine, I give it to them. Otherwise, I think it's very redundant and annoying.
WandaVision started off awkward for me at first, because I couldn't understand the reason for the black/white TV sitcom and couldn't see where it was going. But after watching further on, it finally made sense, sort of gave me an idea how things are going to evolve in future Phase 4 films. But for Falcon and the Winter Soldier, now that the series has finished, I honestly feel that it is still lacking in some ways, not up to my personal expectations. Nothing to anticipate, nothing to look forward to. Just entertaining enough to watch over the weekend.
The Queen's Gambit (2020)
Tried to find faults in this series, but just couldn't. Brilliant show!
I usually find it hard to enjoy a "sport/game" show if I don't even have the basic knowledge in their game rules or if I dislike the sport/game itself.
Chess is a game I was never able to find joy in playing it, but somehow I got hooked to this show. Thumbs up to the great storyline, brilliant acting from the actors/actresses, and of course the music scores too.
You'll definitely enjoy watching this show as a drama that depicts the life struggles of a little girl. If you're an avid chess player and dislike this show just because you're nitpicking on the chess game scenes, then please switch to a sports channel instead, don't watch it on Netflix.
