Black Narcissus (1947)
Misses the mark ...
It has great visuals but the script doesn't really flesh out the characters, except for Deborah Kerr, who apparently joined the order because she slept with her boyfriend and then he dumped her. There wasn't any chemistry between Deborah Kerr and David Farrar. Also, for a movie about nuns there was very little talk of God or drawing strength or guidance from spiritual beliefs. The Nun's Story did a much better job of conveying the struggles one would face as a nun and trying to keep the faith while dealing with internal struggles. Lastly, David Farrar is no Peter Finch (see the aforementioned Nun's Story).
Seconds (1966)
Rock Hudson gives an excellent performance, but the movie itself is very dull and uninteresting.
This movie would have been much more interesting if it had been written by Rod Serling. The audience is supposed to assume that Arthur and Charlie had some involved discussions but we don't hear any of them. Arthur just sits there with a blank look on his face when talking to Jeff Corey. Frankly, a guy like him wouldn't have the guts to do this. He'd be more likely to commit suicide. Also, in order for this to work, you'd think some brainwashing would go along with it in order to be more successful. There's some artsy Fellini-esqe scenes which are rather tedious. Rock Hudson, however, gave what is probably his finest performance. The final minutes of the movie are very intense and Hudson most certainly deserved an Oscar.
Nash Bridges (2021)
Creaky but cute...
It's standard TV fare - felt just like an NB episode. It's always fun to see SF on TV because it's much cleaner than in real life. You definitely have to suspend belief - Cheech and Don are a lil too old and the attempts at trying to be up to date are definitely CBS quality. I wish there had been a Cassidy cameo and Nash would have been a lot more upset about the Cuda getting destroyed. All in all, fun for fan of the orig series like me😄😄😄
