Haute tension (2003)
Some gore and an OK story-line
Yet again, I shouldn't listen to horror hype. These days, when it's desperate to find an actually *good* horror movie, you tend to get excited if a horror enthusiast recommends (frantically) any movie he's seen. But I've learned to ignore those comments. After seeing Darkness, Nameless, Crimson Rivers and now Haute Tension, I shall never expect a riveting horror movie made in Europe.. ;) Haute Tension starts OK, gets even thrilling, then it kind of stumbles on itself. It gets "clever". I think it would've been better being a straight-forward, relentless slasher, which it looks like at first.
If you watch it, preferably by renting the DVD ;), don't expect any miracles. Just the usual euro-thriller with some decent gore.
Darkness (2002)
What a film..
It had elements from the shining, and it didn't feel very original. A few good creepy scenes, but I'm not sure if they alone are worth the rental. The plot seemed too superficial, and the actors just weren't very good. I should have listened to the negative reviews, and remembered what an unconvincing movie The Nameless by the same director was... Maybe the next movie will have a better plot? And I disagree with the reviewer that just because this is a horror movie, it shouldn't be intelligent.
Red Dragon (2002)
A too shiny movie but worthwhile to watch
I felt this was a watered-down version of what should have been. No real risks were taken, all played by the book, so to speak. Naturally it was an enjoyment to see more of Dr Lecter, the very beginning of the movie with him being free felt more real than the unintentionally humorous role of the Lecter we see inside the hospital. The Dragon itself felt real enough, but the lack of brutality shown of his murders made me feel as if the viewer was supposed to sympathize with him more than with the detective.
I was left with a need for an edge.
Christina's House (2000)
*sigh*
Ok, I thought that maybe this movie isn't as bas as the reviews here say, so I rented it. But as an earlier comment says; "after 5 minutes..." you know the quality level of this movie. This was so amateurish! I can't remember when was the last time I saw a movie THIS bad...
From Dusk Till Dawn 3: The Hangman's Daughter (1999)
Interesting until...
I liked this movie actually, though only until the scene when the vampires started to party. After this, the movie dissolved into a cheap copy of the first movie. *sort of spoilers:* Vampires kill, people get saved behind a locked door, someone got bitten but doesn't admit it, of course he turns to a vámpire and kills. In the end, 2 characters come out to sunlight, and the camera zooms back to show the inca temple. ... It felt very rushed. Was there no time to make the ending more... plain better?? So now an promising film got ruined. If there was a 4th Dusk-movie, they should definetily concentrate on that inca-temple that is showed in the ending of 1st and this one.
