The Following Events Are Based on a Pack of Lies (2023)
Not funny, thrilling or clever
After 15 minutes of the first episode my bad acting anxiety was kicking in, that uncomfortable feeling you get when watching actors try to portray poorly written characters far two literally with no nuance. But is it poor acting? Maybe it's the script? Maybe its down to the direction? Surely a good director would spot that nothing about this was hitting the mark. Hang on! Maybe it's the casting......
Whomever is to blame this big budget BBC 'comedy thriller' is neither funny, smart or thrilling.
Alot of the above could be forgiven if this were a cheap teen afternoon series on just after Countdown, but it's not, it's a hyped flagship type show which looks like a shed load of BBC licence payers money was spent on it
Cinematography and lighting are decent, Oxford looks lovely in the sharpness and vibrancy of expensive 4k cameras.
All in all for me this is a bunch of 2nd rate actors trying to make a 3rd rate script into a 1st rate series and its failed.
The Following Events Are Based on a Pack of Lies: Episode #1.5 (2023)
Unconvincing acting, poor casting, not as smart as it thinks it is.
The acting is frankly appalling, I think this might be down to the script but even so the delivery of the script is bad, but maybe this is down to the direction? Or maybe its the casting? Whomever is to blame this big budget BBC 'comedy thriller' is neither funny, smart or thrilling.
The cutaway scenes and flashbacks are reminiscent of a afternoon teen drama and mostly confuse rather than embellish, use of graphic cutaways and social media account shots are amatuer.
Cinematography and lighting are decent and colours are vibrant, female lead is OK, and I like Julian Barratt is most things but he can't save this tripe.
The Whale (2022)
Brendon Frasier is great, but as for the rest of the cast....mmm
I heard alot of good things about The Whale, I prefer real life believable films about people, relationships, personal journeys & complex human behaviour, the more fantastical a film is the less I enjoy it in general, so I was looking forward to watching this film.
In a nutshell the film and Brendon Frasier are let down by the rest of the cast, maybe with the exception of Samantha Morton.
The performances by the actors playing his daughter, the missionary and his friend/nurse are in my opinion overplayed, simplistic, unbelievable, and with very little nuance, especially the daughter (Toxic teen with issues) played her character so one dimensionally she would have been better suited to a teen movie about bratty highschool kids, she was out of her depth in serious drama about love, life and loss. Similarly the missionary boy, and the friend, seems like they read their character study and added nothing extra to the words on their script.
I didn't hate the film, just felt a bit underwhelmed.
