The Ring (2002)
genuinely freaky! worth 8 bucks!
i can't believe this masterpiece came from the same director as the mexican! this is the ONLY movie that has ever scared me to the point that i wanted to cry. yes, i'll admit it, i was about to cry in the theater i was so damn scared.
when i walked into the theater i was expecting another horror/thriller with gratuitous violence, tons of flash imagery, and cheesy special effects. what the movie delievered was the exact opposite. there was a perfect balance of flash imagery, terrific editing, and special effects that would impress even the most anal retentive critics. this was what really made the movie.
naomi watts (the blonde from mullholand drive) delivered an excellent performance, as well as the other actors. brian cox's performance was a bit forced in his "special" scene, but i don't think it was his fault. with some better writing and build up to his character he could have blown away everybody.
bottom line, if you want to have the living hell scared out of you, go see this movie! absolutely terrific! i'll be buying this one on dvd for sure.
The Mothman Prophecies (2002)
absolutely stunning film, delivers everything you want in an intense mind drilling thriller
i loved arlington road, and before i saw this film i knew that a horror/thriller from Mark Pellington would be something to remember. when i first saw that richard gere was starring, i had my doubts about this film. i'm used to gere's bland/dry acting, and he has a few bland moments in this movie, but his performance later in the movie is probably the best i've ever seen him. granted, someone else would have been better suited as the part of John Klein, but gere didn't dissappoint me at all, to say the least. through the entire movie i thought that Laura Linney (she played "Connie Mills" in this movie) was christina applegate!!! hahahaha!!! i don't like christina applegate, so i watched her acting closely. her accent wasn't impressive, but her performance was pretty compelling in the later parts of the movie.
this movie will grip you by your temples, and shake you vigorously. it is a true mind driller. the directing and editing of this masterpiece is what gives it its grasp on you. Mark Pellington's use of flash imagery, quick changes in lighting, and intense sounds all mix with the horror of the story to deliver a tension that will drive you mad, but make you glued to till the end.
if you have a few bucks, and a free night, go rent this film. you should watch it at someones house with a really nice entertainment system. the sound and imagery are pretty sick.
*SLIGHT SPOILER BELOW* my favorite part of this movie is that just as you think the movie could possibly end, it comes back 10 fold, and then 100 fold, and then 1000 fold.
9.5 / 10
Freedom Downtime (2001)
watch this... this film will change your view on the US criminal "justice" system
before i comment, i am not a hacker
before i watched this film, i knew little about kevins case(s) other than the fact that he had been held for over 3 years without a trial. i was baffled by the way the court system treated him. the courts held kevin in SOLITARY CONFINEMENT for 8 months because they were afraid he was going to hack their phone system!!! how are you going to hack a phone with no hacking tools?! did they think he was going to make a device out of spoons and a napkin or something? so they put him in solitary with murderers, rapists, armed robbers, and other violent criminals. this man had evidence that he had viewed source code from novell and sun, and made a few free phone calls. the only reason he was put in solitary was because of the media's view on him.
not only were kevin's countless beatdowns from the government a big wakeup call to how i think about the court system, the other testimonials from hackers in the film were very moving. namely the testimonial from "Bearnie S." who was imprisoned because he had a box of "crystals" that could allow him to make free phone calls. he was severely beaten in jail, and was denied health care for several hours, and in the hospital was denied ANY pain killers (even aspirin or tylenol) for 2 days after having surgery.
think the court system relies on justice? wrong. the media, racism/classism, propaganda, money, and other political influences are what controls the courts now. if this is the tesimonial of only a few hackers, imagine what horrible things have been done to minorities, non-violent drug criminals, and so on. watch this film. you will be informed and entertained at the same time.
Crossroads (2002)
absolute atrocity
my girlfriend forced me to go see this atrocity. this is hands down, the worst movie that i've seen in a very long time. the writing/story was boring and predictable, the acting was miserable (from all actors, not just britney), and it was simply a trick to get you to pour more money into britney. i'm not just saying this because i hate britney, i honestly think this is something that nobody could enjoy and i don't know why anyone could have possibly given this a good review. even if you love britney's disgusting, fake, horrible personality in real life, there is no way that you could enjoy her fake personality on the silver screen. do not see this movie for any reason. you will be dissapointed
