Barbarian (2022)
Representation of toxic masculinity wraped up in a great horror flick
Let's see what barbarian means: "Barbarians symbolize the unillumined, uncultivated thoughts of man. They judge by man's law because they do not understand spiritual law. They are foreign to Spirit, and are totally lacking in true Christian love and refinement."
The movie from the begin to the end shows this toxic masculinity, the willing of men to prove a women wrong, their ego and over confidence can lead to difficult situation and causes self destruction. There are many red flags that the male characters of the movie shows which are offensive and downright cruel the female characters (won't go to the details and ruin it for you).
As a standalone horror movie, Barbarian is one of the best in recent times. The metaphysical representation of male dominance and the toxicity is icing on the cake.
Chup (2022)
A top to bottom Dulquer Salmaan show in a well made and much needed thriller
Chup is a amazing thriller that the bollywood desperately need. More than a thriller, it's a phenomenal example of character study. Every actor has done justice to their roles but undeniable it is a all in all a Dulquer Salmaan show. The potraial of mental illness by Dilquer reminds me of 'Lars and the real girl' which is arguably the best projection of mental illness on the silver screen.
The ease at which Dilquer can shift from being super likable to a darker shade is treat to watch. Shreya Dhanwanthary, Sunny Deol and Pooja Bhatt are refreshing to see in their respective roles and there many occasions where Shreya shines at her best.
The only underwhelming part of the movie is the final execution which seems a bit fast compared to the slow burn tone that the movie has from the beginning.
It is movie you should definitely go for. The Salmaan (Dulquer) we need is finally here 😉.
Shyam Singha Roy (2021)
Romance is alive again
Easily the best India romantic movie of the decade. The chemistry between Nani and Sai Pallavi is infectious. The body language of Nani as Shyam is so convincing, I forgot he is a non-Bengali playing the role. On the other hand, Sai Pallavi is delightful as usual with her strong acting and character adaptation.
Bollywood, take a pen-paper and note down how to create a refreshing romance. I repeat, note down, do not remake and ruin it.
Definately give it a try. The IMDb 7.7 is less for kind of a movie it is. The background music is the cherry on the cake. Every frame meaningful every emotion on spot and specially some really meaningful conversations which often get converted in 'songs' that never conveys the same message.
Brahmastra Part One: Shiva (2022)
A mixed bag but mostly on the underwhelming side
Brahmastra Part One: Shiva, is the movie with both good and bad. Here are my views after the 1st day 1st show watch.
Good:
1. The CGI which delivered well most of the time.
2. Music and especially the BGM which can be very catchy.
3. The attempt. India is rich with mythological stories and the movie is a nice try to represent one.
Bad:
1. Acting, yes acting. It's quite odd to see capable actors like Ranbir and Alia act so loudly and throw each and every dialogue out loud. Same for Mouni Roy who is screaming most of the time. There could a be a bit more toned down acting.
2. Storyline. The story telling could be a bit more engaging. It is at the beginning but lost track on the way.
3. Charector Development. The charector development of Shiva seems a bit abrupt. On the other hand Alia is reduced to a mere supporting character, always relying on Ranbir to save the day. A typical representation of how Bollywood sees the heroin. When you name a character 'Isha', you should make it a bit more stronger.
4. To much faith on audience. Though I agree the movie acts as a build up for upcoming movies, it relies too much on the build up and not on developing the first one.
5. Writing. Some of the dialogues are very repetative and feeds the audience over and over. Also there are too much of romantic moments between Ranbir and Alia that can be avoided. The movie would have been focused on the main theme then.
Overall it is a one time watch for CGI if you don't expect much from the story.
Gehraiyaan (2022)
A nice potrail of human relationship that many fails to understand
Gehraiyaan is nice combo of drama and thriller dealing with complex human emotions. You have to invest in it. The slow storyline takes ups and downs discussing human errors and the power of acceptance. A nice work by Shakun Batra.
Atrangi Re (2021)
A misunderstood gem that shines even more with the presence of Dhanysh
I get why Socrates hates democracy. The 1⭐ and 5⭐ comments made me realise how much people can misunderstand a movie. 'Atrangi Re' is a gem from Indian film industry: one of a kind movie that atleast deals with unconventional problem and shines in the process. Nice acting from the whole cast. Sara Ali Khan gave her best and my god, Dhanush is unbelievable again.
Don't go for the 1⭐ or 5⭐. Decide for yourself. I know you will be surprised. The movie has its parallel to 'Lars and the real girl' and made justice to it up to a great length. It lacks the subtleness that 'Lars and the real girl' had at some moments but dealt with the situation in a nice way.
A must watch for anybody who appreciate good movies.
Dark (2017)
Who knows being in 'Dark' can be this entertaining
Just one sentence for 'Dark' : When someone asked me whether 'Dark' is worth watching, I just replied it's the wrong question; the right question is whether you are worthy of watching 'Dark'.
The Little Stranger (2018)
A horror movie that the industry needs
The Little Stranger is a kind of horror movie I like the most. A horror movie free of unnecessary jump scares and continuous screaming. It shows the true horror that one feels, the horror that comes from envy and greed. A masterpiece and a must watch. The movie left me with the same feeling that I had after watching 'A Ghost Story', which is masterpiece as well. If you want a horror movie with a different taste, these two movies you should try.
