Stereo (2014)
Decent movie
Pretty good movie, but it still misses something to be really remarkable.
The story is OK, going for a pure psychological thriller to something closer to an action movie towards the end. Not too predictable, but there aren't mind-blowing plot twists either. Things are gradually revealed and that's about it.
I enjoyed watching it, but I doubt I'll remember this movie in a few months as I watch other stuff.
Evil Eye (2020)
Best insomnia treatment EVER.
One of the most BORING movies I've watched in a while. It's not a drama, it's not horror. It TRIES to be a thriller but ends up being as exciting as a Solitaire game.
Terrible acting, predictable story, and nothing interesting or minimally compelling whatsoever.
Seriously, if you have 90 minutes to spare and want to genuinely waste them, just stare at your phone screen while it charges from zero to 100%. I guarantee you'll have more fun that way.
His House (2020)
Could've been much better
This seems to be one of those movies severely hurt at the editing studio or by lazy directing.
The story has potential; Sope Dirisu and Wunmi Mosaku do a remarkable job at acting; even the ending is good and special effects are satisfactory. Still, it feels like a good story that is poorly told.
The first half or so of the movie is very good, tension builds up steadily and it really looks like it will eventually skyrocket. Unfortunately, that never happens: it gets boring after some time and there is no climax at all. Even a major plot twist towards the end is wasted by poor storytelling.
It's a shame, not for what it is but for what it could have been.
Aterrados (2017)
Surprisingly good
Blind watching horror movies often leads me to garbage, but this was an exception.
First and foremost, practical effects versus CGI, this is something that should more valued in the industry. Terrified does this very well, delivering disturbing scenes without obvious jump scares.
The story isn't explained deeply and there are some plot holes, but I find this actually good. For horror movies, especially, it's better not to explain things thoroughly.
With a better cast (most of them are mediocre at best) and sound direction, this movie could have been really remarkable. Some events supposed to be scary end up being just awkward because of bad acting.
Still worth watching, though.
I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore. (2017)
Shoot at everything, miss every single time
It's amazing how this movie was labeled as Comedy, Crime, Drama and Thriller at the same time - and yet it achieves nothing of those genres.
It's a comedy that brings no laughs, a drama with no tears, a thriller with no tension and just impactless crimes.
There are funny moments here and there, but they're nothing more than that: "funny". Still, they're so sparse and out of context that ultimately do not support the plot as a whole.
Melanie Lynskey's acting is the only thing that saves this movie from being a royal screw up: she plays the weirdo role pretty decently. Elijah Wood, unless intentionally trying to deliver a badass Frodo, failed miserably. Sorry, dude, you'll be Frodo forever.
In a nutshell, this is the debut movie from a guy pretending to be David Fincher by directing something like Ace Ventura with Tarantino violence.
My Octopus Teacher (2020)
Sick sick sick
I'll start with the good news: cinematography is indeed beautiful, I'm saying that as a long time fan of wildlife documentaries.
The rest of the movie is utter garbage. First of all, it is very likely a lie. They must have captured all the footage within a couple of days and then added a twisted fanfic on top of it. Anybody who believes that thing is real is probably a flat-earther too.
A middle-aged man stalking an octopus for weeks doesn't look like a healthy relationship at all - especially considering the tons of testimonies that can be easily understood as bad taste sexual jokes. Moreover, he broke the golden rule: LET NATURE FOLLOW ITS COURSE (yes, I'm talking about the clam).
If you're looking for poetry, stay away from this atrocity. Go read some poetry. This movie is cringey at most. Or, whatever, watch it with no sound and subtitles while skipping the parts where the filmmaker is speaking. As i said before, the cinematography is nice.
There are many excellent wildlife movies and documentaries out there, don't waste your time watching this crap.
