Human Heart Explodes (2006)
Complicated conversations
I attended an advance screening of this film not sure of what to expect. While the underlying storyline is somewhat unfamiliar to me, this film was excellent. Both the cinematography and direction were amazing, daunting. The human frailties and strengths of the characters were incredibly rich and striking; the scene with the kids playing in the river was the most haunting. Most illuminating were the comments about education in Europe, which I was previously unaware of. The interviews and candid photographs of Gypsy life were extremely depressing and sharp... I haven't seen such desperation since "Pixote". The film puts ideas in front of you and does not expect you to find an answer, nor does it provide one. Instead, the complexities of ethnic tensions, clashing histories and human weaknesses invade the senses, with little room for judging characters actions. A very complicated movie, which leads to very complicated conversations!
