The Winchesters (2022)
A Big Disappointment
As a longtime SPN fan, I did really want to enjoy this show. I was hoping that, after the official reviewers were given 3 different improved upon copies of the pilot, that by the time it reached our screens we'd at least have something good to watch. Unfortunately, that was not the case. There are pacing issues throughout the episode, but I wish that was the only issue. The entire episode was just so cringy. The acting and dialogue felt flat and passionless, like it was just memorized and repeated by rote. They seemed to be trying to force the romantic looks and glances between John and Mary, but there was no actual chemistry between them. Mary's first fight scene was actually in slow motion with whooshing sound effects. (I do wish I was joking.) Exorcisms, in the og show took time and generally involved having the demon in a demon trap and repeating the exorcism over and over. Apparently in the 70's it only required badass girl power, holy water and saying the Latin incantation for about 6 seconds, or a squirt gun, a salt circle and the same 6 second incantation. The writers obviously weren't concerned with sticking to the same lore or maybe they want us to believe John and Mary's descendants became less efficient. (Kidding!) The MOL building was barely protected or hidden, they just turned a key and walked on in. We're just supposed to believe that this building, in this small town, has been left abandoned and not one person has attempted to break in at all in 15 years, they didn't bring up it having any wards or any other type of protection. Okay. I could continue to go on about how ridiculous this show was, but I'll just jump to what was that terrible, Power Rangers style, monster at the end and why? Seriously, why was it so bad. Season 1 SPN monsters, from 2005, were better and scarier than that! Scarecrow anyone?
On a serious note, a really big issue for me are the stereotypes in this show. Why are the poc pigeonholed into such stereotypical roles that media always just expects and assumes they "should" be in? It's such a shame to see, it's disrespectful and disheartening. The same can be said for the gender fluid character, it's wonderful to be inclusive, but very stereotypical to make that character the one to be promiscuous. These things are very disappointing to me, especially when the og SPN has been criticized both for lack of bipoc representation and lgbtq+ inclusion. I expect better than stereotypical inclusion and representation in 2022 media.
My conclusion. Watch the original show! They're relying on og fans and callbacks for this show anyway. Just watch Supernatural! The first 5 seasons are the best!! Go! Do it now!! Supernatural has the heart, soul and chemistry that this show was clearly lacking.

Off To A Great Start!
After the first episode, I really enjoyed it. They took the time to introduce us to all of the important characters. They are being truthful with how diverse it was in the west and it's great to see them using their true languages. I love how they're building the story. The scenery was also so beautiful. I'm very excited to learn all of these character's stories and secrets. It's great to see a strong, intelligent and determined woman as the lead. Hoyt is hilarious and charming, Calian is very strong, smart and intense and I'm sure he and Hoyt are going to have a love/hate relationship and then finding out that Kate is actually a spy at the end! Wow!
This is going to be fun!
