Sunday (2002)
Good in parts
Seemed to be a distinct absence of cash slopping round in this production, but that's how it is with a tv film. I spent some time with soldiers in Northern Ireland in th 1970s and was not all that convinced by the squaddies in this film They were older, bigger and far less disciplined than the younger, thinner and anxious to obey orders Greenjackets I met. Nevertheless, this is a very worthwhile film which helps explain how the army managed to go from being welcomed by the Catholic community when they arrived, to being hated as an army of occupation.
Zazie dans le métro (1960)
Pace making
Clearly this film was the model for Help! and Magical Mystery Tour. Was it illegal to have a girl under 10 in a starring role or are reports that the young heroine was actually her even younger sister, completely wrong? Who knows! A good way to spend the time: this film collects all those filmic tricks and packages them together. Of course, anyone under about 50 will come away scratching their heads saying 'who was Sacha Distel'.
Le feu follet (1963)
Boring and emotionally vacuous
It is hard, perhaps even impossible, to say anything good about this film. The plot is poor little rich playboy has lost the will to live. Who cares?
Making a film in black and white when you have nothing to say, is a great waste of silver.
Only the Valiant (1951)
Strangely enticing
Some amazing things about this film including the cast. A Western with a Gatlin gun is weird enough. I was struck by a fight scene under the hooves of horses. That's dangerous. Oddly a few seconds later they had a native American group on blue screen. The guys looked considerably more friendly than the horses legs yet the fighters could not be in the same frame as them, but they could wrestle under the horses legs. Great cinematography in a mostly cramped world makes this first rate Saturday cinema. Great characters and a real sweaty immersive feel.
