AK vs AK (2020)
Jhakaas!
There isn't a second wasted in this film. The film starts strong, setting up the conflict beautifully. As the story moves into act 2, the film stays strong, with strong plot points moving both the story and the lead character (Anil Kapoor) forward.
We get a sneak peak into the star's lifestyle, we also get a window into their pysche and Anil Kapoor's life. The story is really about him. The director does a great job of keeping Anurag's role to a minimum, only to be used as a prop. Giving a lot of focus and attention to Anil Kapoor, who has done a spectacular job.
They also used many clever tricks to make it appears as if theovie was shot in one take. The use of camera pan to cut scenes is really great!
With the added thrill of the ticking timebomb the movie hold attention through and through. What a great movie!
The Stand In (2020)
Imposter without a heart
The film has one of the most interesting premise and act 1. It takes a twist on the classic life-swap forumla, by adding more desparation to the main characters. However, as the film progresses into act 2, the plot starts coming undone. Act 2 sees boyfriend stealing, an attempted murder, deception and back-stabbing. But none of these really move the story along. There is very little character development that happens and the story just stands still. Conflicts that arise are either resolved without moving the story or characters forward, or forgotten about all together. The climax is very uninspired, one that had me question the entire point of the movie.
Moving from act 1 into act 2, as the story becomes worse, so does the camera work and direction. In the first act, we see some great scenes, fresh, funny, and attention grabbing. But as the story progresses, the movie just starts feeling different, the photography angles become more stock, the pacing becomes more standard, and the performances become more mediocre.
Overall the movie feels like the filmmakers just lost interest in the movie half-way, but decided to finish it anyway.
Seven Psychopaths (2012)
The heights of meta
This story about a story is unique, daring, and little bit too involved in itself.
The concept is beautiful and the setup is fast paced and holds the attention very well. However in the second part of act 2, the movie starts to unravel a bit. The motivations become unclear. There are few actions which move the story forward. To compensate for the lack of story, the writers fallback on the uniqueness of the concept, trying to hold the film together by the meta-ness of it all. But it doesn't really work.
Watch the film if you love screenplay writing and movie making. Watch the first half of the movie if you like fast paced crime stories. Watch it for Collin Farrell.
