The Professor (2018)
Johnny Depp is funny
I won't give a rundown of the plot as it has been covered by others.
What I want to say is that this guy is funny. He is a great comic actor. He knows how to be funny. He knows what would look funny and how to sell that without clowning it up. I appreciate his capacity for subtlety. And he is darkly funny in his role as the terminal cancer patient/English professor. But he's able to do very touching scenes as well.
I had never heard of this movie. Good for him for doing the small films, too. I don't know how so very many rotten movies get made every year. I wish more talented actors would do independent films and provide us with some actual quality choices.
My Last Year with the Nuns (2014)
Universal Human Truth
I didn't know what to expect from this film. As it turns out we seem to share similar experiences of kids from that era (mid to late 1960s). I was in Catholic elementary school, I think a year behind Matt Smith, as I attended the southernmost Catholic parochial school in Chicago. While specific experiences are different, the commonality of relationships with classmates, outsiders, and the clergy ring true. I found myself laughing out loud at some of the characterizations and anecdotes. Well done film! I would be curious to see how it plays with an unfamiliar audience.
