The Letter (1940)
An interesting morality play
I thoroughly enjoyed "The Letter". Bette Davis is never dull, but Herbert Marshall's performance is what drew me, understated, yet, powerful. He was a wonderful actor with a combination of talent and class. Also, yes, the film seems racist in it's depiction of oriental people, but it accurately reflected the attitude of Europeans that colonized Asia, Africa, etc. Please, don't let that keep you from enjoying this gem!
Wagons East! (1994)
I (Native American) had lots of laughs watching it.
Wagons East was a fun movie. I love the premise of settlers going "back east", principally, because I'm Native American. It was almost like watching a Mel Brooks' movie, not one stereotype was left untouched. John McGinley, who played Julian, is one of my favorite actors. He has an amazing range. However, it's too bad that this was John Candy's last film. You can that he didn't enjoy the shoot and that he wasn't feeling well. I recommend it.
Far from the Madding Crowd (1967)
Beautiful and touching
Beautiful cinematography, well-defined characters, and excellent acting. I've seen it at least four times, and have never found it boring. Julie Christie as Bathsheba was both beguiling and frustrating. Terence Stamp was perfect as the soldier. Alan Bates and Peter Finch performed exemplary.
