Silence (I) (2016)
4/10
Kinda boring.
12 July 2021
Great acting, excellent makeup, costume and set design, lovely cinematography, good editing, high stakes, compelling crises and motivations throughout. And yet, it felt long and difficult to me; I struggled to maintain my interest at many points throughout. Maybe it was the pacing I couldn't get on with, I dunno, but I'm not gonna be watching it again that's for sure. I'm sure, however, that some people will love this and I wouldn't consider them wrong for loving it. But it just didn't do it for me.

Surprisingly watchable and even touching.

Now don't get me wrong; this film is truly loaded with all sorts of hilarious moments owing to Wood's bizarre and inept filmmaking. Moments including; baffling dialogue, poor acting, disjointed editing, hella stock footage, confusing sequences, and times where I'm really not sure what's happening at all.

But, after watching "Plan 9" first and being kinda bored at some points, I was surprised to find this was not the case at all with "Glen Or Glenda". I was engaged throughout the entire film and also found it to be a much funnier experience than I my first time watching "Plan 9".

Also, at more than one point through the runtime, I genuinely felt empathy for Wood himself and his plight regarding his own transvestism as depicted in the film. It was genuinely touching and I honestly look forward to seeing this film again.

I dare say this could potentially become a kind of favourite of mine in a way. But for reasons unlike any for any other film I would consider a favourite. It's safe to say I would actually recommend this film, whereas I wouldn't as readily recommend "Plan 9".

The Shining (1980)

Hugely overrated.

It's just okay. Like, nice to watch but, kinda' boring until the last third of the film; by which point it becomes pretty epic! But the whole "build up" thing just falls flat on me; just seems kind of unnecessary. And unfortunately I wouldn't consider the entire film worth it after a single watch. But, hey, that's just my two cents.

Warning: Spoilers
This film is one where I wasn't taken in at first, but then I started to get involved as the first act unfolded. Bruce Willis is typical, Milla Jovovich is just fine, Ian Holm is boring, Brion James is okay, Tommy Lister's casting is "dumb as rocks", Gary Oldman is awesome as usual and Chris Tucker's performance is virtually "movie ruining"... Oh and Lee Evans the comedian & Tricky the musician are both in it for no reasons at all. As the film developed through the second act I became aware that any questions I had from the beginning were not gonna be addressed by the movie. Finally, by the third act, the drama at the end is tired and lame "we live in a society" nonsense where all is saved by "love" and our two "hot-bodied" main characters get it on for some reason as the film ends. Two hours of my life I'll never get back! An offensive amount of very dated CGI, hideously miscast characters, stupid character design in some cases, oh so many failed attempts at humour alongside genuinely humourous actors who aren't properly utilised for comedy in the film, forced & contrived love between the obvious breeding pair, the main character's mother keeps calling in the film which feels long every time and is never funny, and overall it's just a very dumb, unfunny, boring & predictable misfire of a movie. However, many of the set designs are pretty awesome, SOME of the CGI was very good for it's time, Gary Oldman never fails to disappoint (even in this garbage movie) and the design of the Mangalores is pretty awesome too. I won't ever be watching this again.
