Flypaper (1999)
Surprise, Surprise!
I admit that my expectations of this film were not very high when my friend brought it to me to watch. I had the impression this was some sort of soft porn flick, and figured the plot would be banal at best!
To my surprise, however, Flypaper is one of the most enjoyable films I've seen in quite a long time. Maybe because my expectations were so low, I found myself absorbed in the plot before I realized what was happening. Everyone did a fine job with their characters, and the little twists and turns kept my interest up all the way to the end.
Warning: Possible spoilers!
I admit, however, to being rather disappointed by the end. Especially with two rather unresolved circumstances. I wanted to know what happened to the couple making love in the swimming pool with the snakes. I wanted to know what became of Craig S character after they pulled the knife out! Okay, but I'm just being picky. I highly recommend this for anyone who's tired of the big budget, FX loaded box office fair!
Conspiracy (2001)
Best Horror Movie I've Ever Seen
I don't know any other way to describe it. In it's own quiet, sometimes even amusing way, this movie steps forward and grabs you by the shoulders (and intestines) and draws you down into a vision of horror that far surpasses any fiction writers imagination. Don't just listen to what these gentleman are saying...LISTEN to what is not shown as well. Watch their faces as they talk, their body language. I've hardly ever seen a movie where what not is going on right there on the screen is just as chilling as what is. We don't need to be shown snapshots of concentration camps, or bodies burnt or starved. There isn't one single drop of blood oozing anywhere. Yet as they speak, and look, and speculate, the full horror of what their talking about begins to sink in. That a group of men could sit down one afternoon and casually chat about gas chambers and pink bodies, and eat lunch while doing so, is perhaps the most chilling thing imaginable. And, even more so, that this wasn't a work of fiction, but what actually took place not so long ago.
Feardotcom (2002)
Nice visuals...that's about it
If you have to see a movie about people who are limited in the life span area, I suggest skipping this one and seeing The Ring instead. Or, give them both a miss and find Ringu. The only thing interesting in this movie were the visuals, especially the last twenty minutes, which brought to mind the 1920's silent horror films. I can't say much about the acting, I'm not even sure there was any, with the possible exception of Stephen Rae, who looked as though he didn't know whether to snicker or run screaming from the room. My bet is the people who visited the website in the movie were really trying to kill themselves in order to get their paychecks and go home. I can't say I blame them.
Dog Soldiers (2002)
Simply Wow
After picking it up and putting it back a dozen times, and I have to say mainly based on that cheesy cover and JAWS/ALIENS/PREDATOR tag line (which I've seen so many times I could act out in my living room), I finally decided to take the leap and rent it.
Somehow I'm not so sure anyone else in my family is thrilled, but I've watched it at least a dozen times now. The plot is so-so, the special effects are decent, but what makes this movie stand out are the people in the story. I can't praise enough the performances of Sean Pertwee, Kevin McKidd and Liam Cunningham.
What helped also was the humor, it never seemed to take itself too seriously, and I enjoyed all the little insider jokes. For what I thought was going to be just another low budget B horror movie, I was thrilled to find something that rose above the mundane and captured my fancy so richly. Oh, and did I mention I like Werewolves? Thanks to all concerned for making this little gem!
