Very good but...
7 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I couldn't turn this off. Every time I said last episode, it drew me back in. Gets pretty intense, and if it's a true story -as it purports to be- these people are truly ill and can all use help, but it is nevertheless riveting. It's twisted and sad. Now for the "but." And I guess this will be a spoiler of sorts. So SPOILER ALERT: The ending Donny is wandering around and ends up in a pub. All this time he is listening to Martha on his headset, but what he is listening to was not a conversation that she left on his phone. They are from his early meetings with Martha that they had face to face. Yes, she recorded everything, but when or how did he get her tapes? Did I miss something? I found that a huge flaw that took me right out of the story.

Still I would recommend it. A fascinating story for sure.

The Holdovers (2023)
10/10
A wonderful, heartbreaking film
21 November 2023
Hands down one of the best films of 2023. Performances across the board are terrific. Every actor has a chance to shine- and shine they do! Paul Giamatti is always great , but the find here is Dominic Sessa making his debut. The guy is spectacular. He is so darned convincing as a 17 year old kid - and Da'Vine Joy Randolph is perfect; their performances are truly amazing. Her gestures and facial expressions and Sessa's gangly walk and slouch are all perfect. He deserves an Oscar nomination - and, in fact, he should head the list. He is on his way to a great career. Da'Vine Joy should also be remembered come Oscar time. However, even the smaller parts are beautifully played. Even the other holdover kids are top notch. The original screenplay is one of best in years. It's funny, heartfelt, and above all, surprising. Just when you think you have it figured out, it takes a turn. So good. Alexander Payne has done it again.

One Powerful punch
29 October 2023
The film is a devastating look at one man's loneliness. Andrew Scott is giving a brilliant performance. With a simple facial expression, he can tell an entire story. He is one of the best actors around. (Scott, Mescal, Bale, Day Lewis -all great all non-American. Where are the great young American actors? But I digress..) Claire Foy is wonderful and radiant. Jamie Bell has less to do but is very effective in his scenes with Scott. Paul Mescal is excellent- when you can understand him! His first scene when Harry comes knocking on Adam's door needs subtitles! The powerful ending is simultaneously chilling, frightening, and heartbreaking. There's a couple of ways to look at it. But I leave that for the viewer to determine. Do not miss!

Too many episodes.
27 August 2023
Good news: the cast comes alive in the final four episodes. Best performance comes from Chris Abbott. He really gives the series the kick in the butt that it needs, but they're all pretty good - if comatose too much of the time. The last episodes will hold you when everything starts coming together; however, it leads into The Bad news.

The courtroom scenes are intense but kind of unbelievable. I'm not a lawyer, but even I would have objected to some of the questioning. Also, the series takes forever to hook the audience. I was going to bail after three episodes, but I stuck with it (and I'm not sorry that I did.) Also, the final twist with Holland on the stand is as obvious as a runaway Mack truck heading your way. It's just too predictable. Finally, some holes in the the plot will have you scratching your head and saying, "What?!" Still, if you can't find anything else to watch, I suppose there are worse ways to kill time.

PS The relationship between the two main characters would have been a lot more interesting if the shrink were played by the older Laila Robbins.

Jury Duty (2023– )
7/10
Good show with a terrific cast
10 August 2023
Is Jury Duty a great show? Nah, but very often it is so darn funny. Is it repetitious? It is. But the cast is so darn good who cares? It's a premise that is really fun. James Marsden is terrific as the stereotypically egotistical Hollywood semi star. But the other jurors/actors are perfect, too. Each one is so real. However, the luck of the series is finding the guy who is left out of the loop. He is so charming, sweet, compassionate, sincere - but not without raising his eyebrows in disbelief when things get crazy at times. The last episode when the ruse is revealed is excellent. It's actually heartwarming and touching. It makes up for some of the dull stretches.

Ted Lasso (2020–2023)
10/10
One of the best television has to offer.
10 August 2023
I was late to the party when it came to Ted Lasso, but better late than never. The series is one of the best things I've seen - ever. Loved every season. Sudekis is tremendous. He oozes just the right amount of charm that is needed for this premise. However, the entire cast is spot on. How can you not love every character? How can you not love the heart of the show? Virtually every episode has laughs and tears. I know there were complaints about the final season; no gripes here. If it had to end, and I wish it didn't, it ended on the right note for every character. If we ever needed Ted Lasso, we needed it at this time. I never thought I would enjoy anything as much as Mad Men, but this one is right up there.

Oppenheimer (I) (2023)

Brilliant filmmaking
10 August 2023
A totally mesmerizing film that has stayed with me long after I saw it. To begin, the performances down the line are superb. Murphy and Downey, Jr. Should be Oscar winners if there is any justice. But there's not a false note in the ensemble. Robert Oppenheimer is fascinating character. Hero or villain? The film gives us both perspectives and lets us decide for ourselves. The non linear storytelling works brilliantly because what could have seemed like two films works seamlessly as one. Three hours flies by. While I am not a Christopher Nolan fanatic, after seeing this, I have to admit the man is a genius. Cannot wait to see it again.

Barbie (I) (2023)

Clever but much too long
10 August 2023
The film has Margot Robbie and she's wonderful. Ryan Gossling is good but has been overhyped in this role. Will Farrell is doing his usual shtick, which is funny. However, the film seemed longer than Oppenheimer ( which is brilliant filmmaking). After twenty minutes I turned to a friend and asked if Barbie had a plot. Five minutes later a story did start to surface, but it was predicable and not terribly involving. Full disclosure: I never played with Barbie or destroyed a Barbie, so clearly I am not the intended audience. Still, there are some very clever bits, the design is super, the last line is a really laugh out loud surprise, and Robbie is a delight in anything.

Naysayers, begone!
10 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This film is one of the best of the year and has sneaked into my personal top ten. It must be seen at least twice to feel its true impact. The second time I watched it, it wiped me out. Yes, it is a little slow but stick with it because it is incredibly moving. It's melancholic tone is perfect. The two lead performances are tremendously affective. Without some force fed annoying backstory, we learn Calum is a seriously troubled young man: Self loathing and deeply depressed. He communicates this without words. It is a brilliant performance.

There have been questions about the ending.

Here come the spoilers: I think it's clear, at least to me, that when Calum leaves Sophie at the airport, he will soon commit suicide.

When the film opens, the adult Sophie is rewinding the vacation video tape of the last time she saw her father. ( Her father took the tape with him when they parted at the airport.) Later in the film we see her getting out of bed, and she steps onto the rug her father purchased on their vacation together. She has his belongings. But does this mean he committed suicide? I'd say do when you consider other key moments.

There is a scene when we watch Calum walk into the sea. Is he committing suicide? It appears so, but he can't go through with it, because in the next scene Sophie finds him passed out, naked, in their room.

Later when Calum is sitting on the bed, his back to us, sobbing. The camera pans down to a postcard that reads "Sophie, Always remember I love you, Dad" Why write and mail postcard to his daughter. Why not simply tell her or call her? Because he knows what he is about to do.

Calum's walking in front of a truck, standing on the railing of his balcony, even his broken wrist and the wound on his shoulder indicate he takes risks that could cause his death. He is a man who wants to die.

It's a rich film that needs patience, attention, and as I said, a second viewing. However, it is well worth the time. In the end it's devastating.

Beautiful documentary
19 December 2022
Having read and loved Black's book, I had no idea it had been turned into a documentary when I stumbled upon it. Why isn't there more of a fuss about this terrific film? This is a remarkable story about a beautiful woman who overcame so many torturous obstacles and who faced each one with tremendous courage. While this is clearly about a son's unwavering love for his mother, it is also about Dustin Lance Black's crusade to overturn Proposition 8 and his fight for his mother's life. It is a heartfelt, beautiful story that speaks to the heart, compassion, and strength for which we should all strive in our lives.

When I read the book, I had to wipe away tears that made the words blurry. The documentary is no less affective. Highly recommended.

Totally unbelievable
30 November 2022
Not good. There were a few funny lines, but other than that, this film was a dud. To begin, there is no way I believe these actors are in the same family. Ben Platt and Kristen Bell as brother and sister? Really? Who cast this film? There is no no way I would believe someone like Janney's character would remotely interest the man playing her first husband. He had an air of class in his appearance; her character was crass. ( but the actor playing her husband was virtually impossible to understand.) Situation after situation became more far-fetched and ridiculous. Two hours of HGTV's "Love It or List It" would have been time better spent.

Wonderful from start to finish.
16 November 2022
Martin McDonough rarely disappoints whether working on stage or on film. His quirkiness is on display again. If you are familiar with his work, take him for his words here! The film is brilliantly acted across the board. Gleason and Farrell make a great pair. The film is funny, sweet, and heartbreaking- the kind of film that rarely surfaces today. It does not move like a bat out of hell ; it is leisurely paced, but it never feels slow.

Gleason has a terrific speech about the ways people are remembered years after they're gone, but this is topped by Farrell's simple, beautiful response. Gorgeous writing. Wonderful acting. Simply, put a stellar film.

Surprisingly affective
14 November 2022
What you have here is a lovely little film.

Not really provocative in any way, but somewhat sad, yet genuinely heartfelt. It's a small ensemble of players, but they're all good, and Harry Styles does himself proud alongside these seasoned pros. The revelation at the end was not unexpected. You can see it from a mile away - and I am one who never catches the surprises in films- but that's neither here nor there. Some of the reviews said it was too slow moving. I wouldn't say that, but it was deliberately paced, which worked well. The ending , again not really surprising, was, nevertheless, quite moving. I would recommend it.

Only a curmudgeon could not love this film
6 November 2022
I kept putting A New Era off because the last Downton movie was fine but a little disappointing. I thought this one was delightful in every way. Maggie Smith was at her best, deserving of an Oscar nomination. But the entire cast was terrific. Of course, it is not believable. Who cares? We've grown to love these characters and want the best for them. It's a fairy tale and a perfectly delightful one. There certainly is an opening for the next generation, but this film ties everything up in a tidy bow. I think it has gone out on top with this one, and I'll miss them. Don't listen to the gripes: you'll laugh, you'll cry, but in the end m, you'll be sorry to see them go.

Seven hours of my life I'll never get back
21 August 2022
A premise that is totally unbelievable so it starts on a very boneheaded note - and then it gets sillier and sillier. The final episode is dumb beyond belief. Everything imaginable but the kitchen sink. Dialogue: awful. Situations: preposterous. Characters: knuckleheads.

The sheriff was kind of fun; therefore, the 1 rating.

Grrrrr!

Warning: Spoilers
Great show ... until the totally disappointing ending. HATED, HATED, HATED it! Wendy is so vile she needed to pay. I wish Jonah would have turned the gun on his parents at the end. Or they all should have died in the car crash. Ruth, Wyatt, and Ben - the only decent characters- get it, and Wendy and Marty end up with everything they want. Worst. Ending. Ever.

One of the worst
30 April 2022
No one in this film can act. Even when Manz is silent, she's terrible. It's amateur hour at the Ok Corral. Unfortunately, they all survived the filming. Thirty minutes was all I could take. I cared nothing for a single character, and it's a true bore. Spare yourself and save your time. Grotesque filmmaking in all respects: acting, directing, screenwriting, editing, sound, etc.

What were they thinking??
14 February 2022
What a dud! One of the dumbest "thrillers" imaginable. Characters are all dull and one dimensional. Plot makes absolutely no sense. Doesn't feel like New York or Newark! Its 95 minutes I'll never get back. I would have given it one star, but the actors did know their lines, recited them without breaking up, and didn't accidentally bump into each other.

STAY AWAY!

Total bore
31 December 2021
Why is this actress winning awards for this role? It's the same dull performance she turned in as Jean Seberg. She cannot act.

The film itself is a bloody pretentious bore. It makes Diana look like a simpering fool. Do yourself a favor and avoid. Avoid. At all costs AVOID!!!

22 November 2021
I tried this film twice. The first time I last twenty minutes. Then I saw Tick tick...boom and loved it. I tried Rent again. Got through an hour the second before I turned it off. Sorry I just don't get the love. A lot of noise.

Damn! This film is terrific!
22 November 2021
The movie will resonate deeply with anyone who has tried to create anything. I was not expecting much because I find Rent unbearable ( sorry), but I was blown away by this. Saw it twice and will revisit again. Cast is great, music is terrific, production values top notch. A really strong directorial debut for Lin Manuel Miranda. I would say he nailed the tricky technique of making a musical film. This is the best one I've seen since Chicago.

It's funny, sad and heartbreaking. But ultimately it's a joyous film about the wild frustrations of an artist. Yeah, I could pick at a few things in the script that didn't make total sense, and could it be too "insy" for the masses? Not sure. Just see it. Definitely deserves Oscar nominations in several categories, starting with Garfield.

Films are finally looking up. Tick tick...boom and Belfast. Next up Adam McKay's latest.

Don't listen to the naysayers!!
14 November 2021
What a terrific little film! Wonderful performances, gorgeous locale, excellent score, and a witty, warm-hearted script.

It's a film for adults who find Marvel movies and cartoon characters junk. Is this perfect ? No. The Jon Hamm character seems extraneous and some of the symbolism is slightly heavy handed. It also feels like two different stories divided into two acts. But no matter, it touches the heart and there's not many film that can make that claim, and Blunt, Dornan and a subtle Walken are so darn good.

I'd see this every week for a year before spending a dime on that heartless Hollywood Sci-fi nonsense out there.

Lovely, heartfelt film
30 October 2021
Not a perfect film, but a darn good one. Easily touches the heart. The cast is stellar. Ken Branagh loves faces and gives his cast closeups that tell the story without the use of much dialogue. See Judi Dench for what I mean. However, the star is the young Jude Hill playing Buddy. The performance is perfection. If anyone doesn't love this character by the end of the film, he has no heart. But Dornan, Hinds, and Balfe are all terrific. My quibbles come with the film's political bent. Not sure why the leader of the Protestant rebels feels Pa is essential to their cause. And understanding this seems essential to the family's decision. I could have missed something early in the film because it took these ears a while to adjust to the Irish accents. However, other than that -and some heavy handed foreshadowing- it's a lovely, wonderful film.

Horrifying in every way
4 October 2021
I gave it a one because zero stars is not an option. A jaw dropping event. Hysterical, stupid, but ultimately, just damned depressing. Is this really where musical theater has gone? Into the hands of rank amateurs? It had to be written by the fifteen year old nephew of one of the producers who based his knowledge of the story on tabloid headlines. Not tabloid stories, just the headlines! If this opened during the Golden Age of Rodgers and Hammerstein, Lerner and Loewe, Jule Styne and Frank Loesser, it would have closed at intermission. Today it will run five years and stupid theatergoers will jump to their feet screaming with delight at the curtain call. Like I said a depressing example of NYC theater today. Rotten music, second grade version of events, inane lyrics, embarrassing performances, ugly design and inept direction and choreography Did I mention I find it insulting, demoralizing, and sad. Oh and that it's hateful in every respect.

Oddly magnificent in its absurdity
22 August 2021
I was laughing at it in the beginning but for some odd reason it started to grab me. I have no idea why. It's insane, bizarre, weird but hypnotic. It's like a Gerome Ragni and James Rado musical directed by Tom O'Horgan. I don't know; it feels like it's from outer space, but it's brilliant!
