The Left Right Game (2020)
A brilliant mind supernatural thrill ride
I was initially sceptical to start on this series. The title itself doesn't add any intrigue. But as I started on the first episode, I was hooked!
The premise is quite simple, playing a game of turning onto first left and right on the road. As the story develops, the seemingly harmless road travel became a thrill ride where one never know what will happen next.
The story was on high octane but just blow out of steam towards the end. There was too much going on from episode 7 onwards that I needed to re-run a couple of times to catch the detail.
I didn't like the ending and I never did for any movie and podcast to leave things hanging and left it to your imagination on what would've happened.
The cast were spot on and I love how they carried each with a personality that is 'visible'.
All things said, it was a good series and I will definitely have a re-run.
Qorin (2022)
A weak supernatural thriller
The premise of this movie was as good as any Indonesian horror movie: a secluded all girls boarding school on religious study. There's sexual abuse, personal issues and trauma intertwined in the story; which was interesting in developing the characters.
On the main premise of the movie: Qorin or the ritual to call out Djinn. It was interesting at first but not well executed beyond just a few glimpse here and there. There was not a real story behind calling out the djinns other than the main antagonist's reason to prove his father in law wrong.
There is a good part of the story that touches on sexual abuse that happens in boarding schools and making the students submissive.
Overall execution is weak. The story drags a lot abd not interesting. I'd suggest not to watch unless you have nothing else to do.
Good Luck to You, Leo Grande (2022)
An engaging affair (?)
I was not prepared for how good the movie will be when I watched it. Initially, I thought it will be just another of the movies that delves on long monologues between main characters on morality and ambiguity of paying for sex. How I was wrong.
The story is engaging and I would pin this on the absolutely spectacular performance by both Emma Thompson and Daryl McCormack! Their voice, their expression, the way they portray the character as they explain who they are to each other, their body language; everything blends together well that I would say they did (should) enjoy the outing on/off the screen.
Though the nudity portion did come, I would say it was a bit too late, yet it makes sense. I would say that this is a good referral for those at similar juncture in their life, to actually explore their life while they still can.
This movie deserves Oscar!
Kuttavum Shikshayum (2022)
A disappointment
The movie shares similar theme as a Tamil movie named Dheeran Athigaram Ondru.
The disappointment was that, it had a good cast who portrayed police officers well, especially the senior actor in the Bashir character. To call it a thriller will be wrong, more like a piece of life kinda movie.
The end was confusing as well as massive understatement regarding the whole event that took place.
Asuran (1995)
An experimental Tamil movie
Though the main plot of the movie borrows heavily from Predator, the rest of the movie was well made. Each of the character from the scientist to the guerrillas, are all with their own motives. I'm giving this movie a higher rating as it had a profound impact to me as a child, as there was no other Tamil movie that dared to tackle sci-fi subject as this at that point in time. Overall it's a good movie but don't expect Hollywood level VFX.
Copshop (2021)
A good adrenaline rush!
The casts did a splendid job with this one. I absolutely adore the Valerie character, she oozes such a cool level headed top-cop attitude while working at a county police. The Sergeant and the rest of the police made the whole place believable, though the police station is completely unbelievable (it looks modern and fully stacked and funded, for a place out in the desert!). The other 3 villain characters did well for their role, though Lamb did an awesome job to portray a psychopath to a tee. Though so, the storyline doesn't make sense much. For how the character was portrayed as a "fixer" and with connection with big shots, makes no sense that no proper effort was done to dispose him. Too many loose ends or probably they don't care on that. Otherwise, this is a fun adrenaline pumping movie with substance in the dialogue.
The Next Three Days (2010)
A family affair
The actors (all of them that appear on screen) did a fantastic job in making the movie a slow but engaging journey. Russel Crowe just munched through this role and potrayed the lead convincingly. He appeared and acted as an ordinary man and didn't suddenly turn action star just because he's busting his wife out of jail. The movie did seem confusing as my initial expectation was it will be an action movie. It turned out better as the emotion and turmoil of the family is captured well. The pacing of the movie could be better as around the middle of the movie, suddenly there's a change of pace which should've turned the 3rd quarter of the act as a cat and mouse game but it didn't.
Dos (2021)
Two is not enough
The premise of the movie was good: two strangers surgically attached together without knowing how and why they end up there.
It's one of the movie that could use more runtime, to allow the story to sink in and for the mystery to be explained but it didn't.
The nudity is there but not in a sensual manner.
Overall it could've been better.
Vivante (2002)
A self healing journey
The protagonist was met with an uneventful night and from there she spirals down the rabbit hole. Eventually, she had the closure she needed to move forward. It's moving in the sense the main character was "alive" in her role and portrayed it well. The other casts, aced their role well. Though so, the story itself is pretty bland and straightforward.
The Witches (2020)
Fantastic family entertainer!
This is an entertaining piece of family movie in otherwise comic book adaptation and movies for adults.
I have to give it to Anne Hathaway for wonderfully portraying the Grand High Witch. My kids were really glued to her. Octavia Spencer comes across as a lovely grandmother saddled with a sad experience from her childhood. The kids/mouse does wonderful job and carried the story along nicely.
This is one wholesome movie that takes me back to Home Alone era where good family movie is focused on the kids as the main characters yet the supporting casts are good too.
Would love this kinda movie to be made more.
Blood Red Sky (2021)
A decent horror flick!
This is a decent horror flick which I feel, has the framework of Luc Besson movies (fast paced action, main character is at wrong place at wrong time)
The cast and acting is good. The story is pretty straightforward, yet is able to show the evolution of the main character which leads to her desperate situation.
This is the second time, I'm seeing vampires given the same treatment as zombies (like World War Z and Train to Busan) where there is a frenzied mass infection within closed space. By the way, the first time I saw vampires do a mass feeding was in Daybreakers.
The first half was really solid but the second half seems to have lost the steam after putting all the cards on the table. The ending seems convenient and just made to finish the movie.
Overall, a good watch as I was pumped throughout and enjoyed it.
False Positive (2021)
Definitely a False Positive
The 3 star is solely for Pierce Brosnan's charisma.
How do I go about this movie. The first 10-15 minutes was promising. Really promising. But from then on, it's predictable and for most part, kinda lost in translation.
The female lead is good looking but not good at acting. So, when the whole movie is carried on her acting, its pretty flat. The male lead is good in acting but his role is restricted hence he seems not genuine.
The supporting actors are good in their limited role.
The script and screenplay is incoherent hence it got lost and kinda doesn't make sense in the end.
It's good for 1 time watch and that's about it.
The Tomorrow War (2021)
A promising and fun sci-fi
Yes, there are loopholes in the plot, yet on the overall level, the movie delivers.
It's a fun and entertaining with an even pace throughout and I don't find any different (in terms of plausibility) from the recent time travel movies.
In the core, it's a family movie of the 3 generation of Foresters coming together to prevent the alien infestation.
I do believe that the future soldiers coming back in time is not only for the manpower but also, to change the timeline altogether. The future they had is not what they want to live in, as the merely surviving population.
Though so, the last portion of the movie is the least believable one, as I find it doesn't make sense that, after uniting to fight the tomorrow war, they are at loggerheads when it comes to eradicating the dormant aliens.
I do think the movie has potential for sequel as the present is changed due to the interference from the future and now they have access to the time travel technology. The world will be stuck in time loop as future mankind will interfere with the past again and again.
Out of Death (2021)
Good lead act, bad script
Jamie King does justice to the role. She's the one who single handedly carried the movie. Gosh, in a way, she looks like grown up Chloe Grace Moretz.
Bruce Willis - he must be the reason where the main portion of the film's budget went. He is totally unbelievable, almost as if sleep walking. Though he fits a veteran cop character, it could be just anyone else.
Everyone else - made their best with the role given.
The script/screenplay sucks, big time. The movie is lifeless and the camera work doesn't help either.
Some shots seems unnecessary, some scenes are unbelievable, like when Jamie was stabbed on her front shoulder, she just covers it up with her shirt and carries on. On and off through the movie, Jamie is with and without bra (I'm sorry if this is offensive) which is inconsistent.
Overall, not even worth your spare time.
Wild Orchid (1989)
Sensous and erotic movie
The story is very flat yet the feel of the movie is just, amazing. The music, is a big support to the overall story, which carries the sensous theme to the next level. Mickey Rourke was spot on as Wheeler, giving of Marlon Brando like aura (talking soft yet firm). Jacqueline Bisset is the the one doing the real acting, she's awesome! Carre' Otis is fit for the role of new girl in the big city. Bruce Greenwood, damn, he looks good no matter what. This is a good movie for a lonely time where you have time to to be immersed with the movie and the music.
Locked Up (2017)
Confusing movie
It's not worth the time if you have any to spare. It's the first time that I'm seeing nudity where front portion of the female lead is shown, extensively. I would rather say this is a softcore porn (almost) than an actual movie.
Village of the Damned (1995)
I thought it would be good
Given it was directed by John Carpenter, I thought this would be a good thriller/horror movie. The premise was good, aliens impregnating all over Earth in order to grow their offsprings and take over earth. But it was never clear who or why they chose Earth in the first place. The aliens seems pretty advanced as they could impregnate these poor women by creating a force field of sort that knocks-down everyone within the range.
The cast is good, Kirstie Alley especially shined in her limited screen time. Christopher Reeve was somewhat good. The kids were good as well. Overall it's a waste of time for me. I gave 2 stars for the cinematography and set-up.
