Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024)
more plotholes than fishnet stockings
This movie is an insult to.intelligence. A plot as thin as paper blown up to last almost 2.5 hours. The whole story does also not make any sense. So the evil apes have lived in their kingdom for how many years, trying desperately to open a door, while all the time there was a conveniently open entrance just on top of the mountain? If only Apes would know how to climb....
Then there is a seemingly useless shivering and starving woman, who ends up killing a man with her bare hands - by the way, where did she get that gunpowder? And why was that woman in the metal shelter thingy, where she has probably lived all her life, still wearing a hazmat-suit?
The movie makers (I guess it's been written by AI) probably were aware of the thinness of the story and tried to hide it by putting portentous bombastic music on almost every scene.
But I think the movie got one thing right: humans really got dumber.
The Power: Scarlet Minnow (2023)
Wow!!
This episode made me wish that something like "the power" actually existed. When the Mayor's daughter told her mother about walking in the dark without being scared - that was so powerful! Because girls and women everywhere can relate to that story - always being alert, walking with car keys in fist, always checking on girl friends, making sure they are safe, following a thousand rules to prevent getting raped. Imagine a world, where girls could grow up without fear! I felt such a longing to receive a gift like "the power" after that episode. But alas, I have to send my daughters to self-defense classes instead.
The Woman King (2022)
I don't get the haters
This was one of the best movies I have seen lately. It had everything I want from a movie - deep characters, action, great story, awesome music, incredible actors.
For me, a 50 year old female, it felt so empowering seeing a 57 year old female taking the lead in an action packed movie. I don't think that ever happened before. Usually, woman this age get to play grandmothers who act like grandmothers, while men this age still get the lead in romantic movies and, of course, their love interest is a woman in her 20's who - again of course, has the same feelings for him (...right)
The mostly all black female cast was incredible and it shows, that there are roles for women out there other than the sexy girlfriend/sexy superhero (are there any female superheros who are NOT sexy??) the nice housewife or the already mentioned grandmother.
I totally don't understand the plethora of one star ratings. The only reason I can imagine is that there are still a lot of men out there who cannot handle a mostly all female cast in an action movie. If you look up the rating by demographic, it seems to prove my point.
Ted Lasso (2020)
Perfect first season, should have ended there
I really enjoyed the first season of this show. Short episodes, positive vibes, quirky characters. Coach Lasso is a great character and his never ending optimism is heartwarming. It was refreshing to watch a show without violence and so much positivity. But unfortunately the show did not end after season one. Season two is much darker, the episodes are longer (not a good thing), the story does not make any sense anymore - I'm four episodes in and I'm giving up.
Reina (2019)
Distressing
This short movie made me feel so depressed, thinking about the fate of girls in so many countries. The movie is about an innocent girl who reluctantly agreed to help out at a party, to please her uncle who gave her a pair of golden high heels for her own birthday. At this party, it dawned on her, that she is not there for helping out as a waitress, but for having sex. An older girl helped her to escape - for now, but Lola's innocence is broken. It is heartbreaking to see her crying, crying about her fate, knowing, that there is no real escape, that she will be forced to do it eventually, that she is living in a man's world, full of abuse and violence, where girls and women have no right to live their own lives, making their own decisions. Back home, Lola starts packing her bag to flee, but then she saw her little sister, dancing with her uncle who had betrayed her and will betray her sister. She runs outside to snatch her sister away and started dancing with her instead. I felt for these girls, for their hopeless situation and I cursed the patriarchy and the implicitness of these men, to take it for granted that girls and women will have to obey them, will pretty much be their slaves - because what else are you, when you are denied to live your own life?
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)
Too much of everything
This movie doesn't really know what it is supposed to be. A Drama? A Fantasy flick? A Superhero Movie? A Bromance? A Comedy? It tries way too hard to appeal to every possible viewer. That is why it achieves nothing. It started well with some really awesome martial arts scenes, but then the story got more and more confusing. There were more holes in the plot than in Swiss cheese. For instance, a 14-year old trained assassin apparently got bullied at school - really?? And WHY was this guy who played a British actor even in the plot? The moment he showed up was the moment I was done with that movie. And then there were the over-the-top magical creatures who probably were supposed to get some "awwws" from the female audience. But the most disappointing thing to me was, that the more interesting and more badass sister got treated the way women typically get treated in Hollywood: she got totally ignored. Why did the male hero get all the rings? She did deserve at least half of them. It's male storytelling at its finest. As usual.

On the Verge (2021)
Are you kidding me?
This is a terrible show! I can't believe a middle aged woman actually wrote this script. Has she ever met any of her peers? Woman are described as either obedient or stoned all the time or hysterical or obsessed with sex. Really?? A show, where the awful husbands seem more sane and more likeable than the main characters, doesn't do Feminism a favour! Middle aged woman already have the reputation of being crazy and thanks to this show this opinion just got reinforced.
Captain Fantastic (2016)
Fairy Tales are more believable
This was probably one of the weirdest movies I have seen - in a bad way. As a homeschooling parent myself, I realized that I have to step up my game a bit. On tomorrows lesson plan I put shark hunting and brain surgery. I have seen Disney Movies more believable than this one. A father, whose wife has been sick with bipolar disorder for around 18 years (right after the birth of the oldest son), not only managed to care for his wife, but also living in the wilderness while teaching 6 kids multiple languages, literature, game hunting, fighting, and, and, and. He acted like a dictator towards his kids and only followed his interests. He even ignored the grief of a father and a mother, only to get what he wanted. He acted like he believed in principles, but at the same time drilled his kids to rob a grocery store. This Movie did not make any sense at all and I can't believe the great ratings. Also, did Noam Chomsky sponsor that movie?
