Homunculus (2021)
Doesn't do the manga justice
I was very excited upon hearing about the adaptation from Netflix, but after finishing the whole movie, I felt as if there was no point in watching it at all.
Although the movie was rather slowly paced in the first hour, there was barely anything that makes you care about any of the characters. Themes and plot points that are supposed to be deeply thought about are forgotten minutes later. The movie picks up a little after the halfway mark, but sadly, the little plot is unable to do much for the rest of the film and the ending is unsatisfactory in the bad way.
Overall, it just feels static. It was capable of doing something interesting, especially given the tone of its origin, so why was the end result so uninteresting? Please use the almost 2-hour runtime to read the manga instead. I'm begging you.
Alien Conquest (2021)
Please don't watch
The script is not creative and the actors weren't convincing. Some of the cinematography choices were very strange. For example, the camera angles are constantly too close to the characters (maybe due to budget), but it really takes away from the setting of the story. The placement is usually too low so the audience is either looking upwards at the actors or eye-level with them, and the camera ALWAYS focuses on the characters.
Also, there is a large disconnect between the quality of the film and its cgi. Most of the time, the cgi looks fine/good, however, there are parts where it evidently lacks thought. The movie avoids showing the cgi (again, most likely because of budget), though it is so obvious when the camera is facing the opposite of where the actors are looking for the majority of the time.
Overall, just bad. Too much talking, not enough character/setting/anything development leads to a sleeper movie. Please waste your time watching a good movie instead of reading this review ;)
