The Morning Show (2019)
Best show on Apple TV
I've watched the whole series twice, its a very topical subject of mans manipulation over woman in the work place, did he? Didnt he?
The performances of Carrell, Aniston and Weatherspoon are beyond sublime, the true gritty nature of whats happening never being too far from the comedy, its funny and very serious all at the same time. The show has some real puppet master antics afoot all the way through and this will ultimately prove to be a defining moment in 20s TV shows, you know that this is only going to get better, you also know its a touch above your usual made for streaming offer.
No Reasons (2016)
Better than Death Walks
Having watched Death Walks, then reading articles online I saw that director Spencer Hawken had created this, which he stated lived in the same universe. So I was intrigued to figure out what and how. This is not a spolier but you need to look at the last two minutes of Death Walks and the middle of the end credits of No Reasons to see the connection, thee is something really quite dark forming here that i have no idea where its going.
No Reasons which seems to have been made a bit after Death Walks is a much better more solid, better acted, better written and shot movie. It starts as a fairly inoculous drama and then progresses into something really, really horrible. And while we know these things happen we dont want to know they happen. Yet at the same time this leads to a truly soul destroying viewing experience, its not a bad movie, not by any means. But you soon discover that there are very few people to care about, each nice character turns out to be horrible. A great list of actual celebrity names rather than dodgy gangsters and reality tat these low budget Brit movies always seem to have, this is very strong pedigree, Daniel Peacock, Roland Manookian, Lorraine Stanley, Vicki Michelle and new discovery Elisha Applebaum from Netflix's popular Winx Saga.
Watch this movie, but if your longing for happy endings steer clear, this is as shocking as a Serbian Film and as calculating as Hostel.
Death Walks (2016)
Credit for nothing
Credit where credit is due, a group of people most of whom are not actors (Obviously) to create this weird little film that cost nothing. In terms of acting its a little like watching a school play, but in terms of plot, music and cinematography this is a pretty solid film.
I really enjoyed the film as it drew to a close after twist, after twist after twist were revealed, the writer clearly has a love of Hitchcock. Best of all none of the twists were obviously, nothing quite ran as expected.
I had a laugh both intentially designed by the makers, then less intentially "acting" but at the end of the day, big movies get big budgets and can be totally unrewarding, this took no resources and delivered a solid little amateur movie.
Shockingly of all, was the appearance of Francesca Ciardi, I remember in the 90s watching Cannibal Holocaust behind a pillow and being totally in fear. Then when looking at the actors that were solid such as her and Jon Guerriero the security guard, I was astonished to see that this was the same woman. Sheer masterstroke to get an actor from the most shocking movie of all time into your low budget movie!
Succession (2018)
I defy you!
I defy anyone to noyt enjoy this show, its a true touch of genius, every episode brings a whole new series of crisis for our dispicable family.
Its hard to root normally for a film or show that has no likeable characters but Succession does it seemlessly, its a proper top draw series with Brian Cox leading the battle with his continual "F**k You!" attitude to literally everything, all the other characters are great playing weaker (but think they are stronger) characters trying to snatch their fathers business empire from him before he ruins it all.
Excellent stuff!
Calls (2021)
Some good chills
Really enjoying this star studded offer from Apple TV that merges soundwaves with audio to show a series of phone calls that happen over the course of the epidode. P{robably not going to be "down enough" with the kids of today, but if ytour old enough to have listened to ghost stories on the radio this is pretty amazing stuff. Episofde lengths vary between 10 and 20 minutes and if you watch/listen in the dark with the volume up it could get you right on the edge.
