Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
What a letdown
Wonder Woman has always been a favorite character for me and I loved the first movie but everything that was done right the first time around was just plain wrong this time. I don't know if it was less influence by Zack Snyder or if it was just an over done misfire but it didn't work. The movie was poorly written and the pacing was awful. It took multiple attempts for me to get through it because it just wasn't very interesting. I'm holding out hope that the 3rd movie will return to what made the first one great because this actually somehow landed beneath justice league and suicide squad for me.
Those Who Wish Me Dead (2021)
Why all the hate.
I thoroughly enjoyed it. It could have had more depth but it moved at an enjoyable pace while slowing down only when necessary to give development to the characters. I kept waiting for Jon Bernthal to go full Punisher and just save the day but they left the heroics to Angelina and she played the damaged savior very well.
Rocky Balboa (2006)
The speech!
Rocky Balboa is a beautiful heartbreaking masterpiece. His speech to Robert in the street is one of the greatest I've ever heard. The raw emotion in this movie is simply unrivaled. He had a once in a lifetime love and losing her was earth shattering for him and you feel that pain deep in your soul. Stallone was absolutely brilliant and I truly believe it is his finest acting performance. I felt the sense of loss and loneliness so deeply that it was as if we had all lost her. It made me hug my own wife just a little tighter.
Rocky II (1979)
A worthy contender
The second best sequel ever made behind The Godfather 2. Talia Shire upped her game in both and it created magic. The pacing was actually improved over the first and the struggle was shown from a different angle. It was truly fantastic and trying to pick a favorite between Rocky and Rocky II is like trying to pick your favorite child.
Rocky (1976)
Masterpiece
As a kid I always loved Rocky IV and didn't really appreciate the original but after watching it now I realize how truly great it is. Rocky is the film that all sports movies should be compared to. It is the gold standard.
Band of Brothers (2001)
The gold standard
The single greatest representation of WWII on film. The interviews with the members of Easy Company really made this series. Every actor carried his role with the respect it was owed. I've watched it more times than I can count and it still blows me away.
Making Babies (2018)
Surprisingly good movie
I have 3 children and the wonderful godparents to my kids have been struggling to conceive for while so this movie hit a little different for me. I can't imagine how hard it is to go through this struggle and the strain it could put on a relationship. I felt this was a well balanced approach to showing that struggle. It showed the pain but had enough humor to lighten the punch to the gut. It's a sensitive and difficult subject and I think they handled it perfectly.
Titans (2018)
Don't understand the hate.
This is a fantastic show with great character development. I like that nothing feels rushed and they take their time to work through the story arc instead of just blowing past meaningful moments to get to the next action scene. Season 2 gets a lot of hate and I don't get it. It was well paced and thoughtful with some nice fan service mixed in. I really hope they knock season 3 out of the park to silence the haters and doubters.
Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)
What I hoped for.
This was everything I hoped it would be. It had better continuity and the storyline flowed. It was a 4 hour epic that that was paced perfectly. It goes to show just how much of a hack Joss Whedon is. I hope it will breath life back into the DCU and continue to develop into something to not just rival but to supplant the MCU. It was worth the wait to finally see this masterpiece complete. Please turn control of this universe over to Zack Snyder so he can continue to right the ship and share more of his vision with us.
